  1. Cheers Cliff Ton. That would be Digby College then. I used to go there in the 60s to see a few bands. My band, the Salty Dogs, actually played there.
  2. Apparently a live album called 'Both Ears and the Tail' was recorded by Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick at the Folkus Folk Club in Nottingham in 1966. Does anyone know where this was?
  3. I've seen a picture recently (usually shown on Paul Robey's TV program) of Commerce Square in the Lace Market containing a place called Sgt Pepper. The photo (as on Picture Nottingham) claims to be taken in 1975. Does anyone know if Sgt Pepper was a club?
  4. I have seen a question asked as to whether there was ever a priory on this site prior to the Hippodrome/Gaumont, so I assume I'm asking prior to the factory?
  5. For my website, I'm trying to create timescales. So I want to know roughly when clubs were open. Currently my scales are by decades, but if people know exact dates that would be good. Any help appreciated.
  6. There was the Loft Bar and Fade and the Hard to Find cafe on Mansfield Road.
  7. Does anyone have any information about wild white cattle in Wollaton Park in the recent past? I believe some may have been re-introduced in the 1980s but they are not there now.
  8. Does anyone know anything about the 50s and the teddy boys? Where did they go/hang about in Nottingham? Any stories?
  9. The latest article - about Rock Cemetery. Any extra information welcome. https://scenebeforeinnottingham.wordpress.com/home/landmarks/church-rock-cemetery/
  10. Does anyone know? There was a club called the Calypso on Byard Lane, later the New Calypso opened on Commerce Square. I can see that the New Calypso was opened around 1973/4 by Carlton Forbes the cricketer. Did he own the original? Does anyone know any details? Did anyone got to either of these clubs?
  11. I have been spending my time in lockdown adding detail to the 'Scene Before in Nottingham' website. I have not been out taking photos but I have added much written word, hopefully which you will find of interest.
  12. Quite a few updates made on the website: The ‘Scene Before in Nottingham’ website has been enhanced with more information, more stories about Nottingham. It now contains the following categories and sub-categories which can all be reached from the ‘Home’ page (just click on the pictures or words). - Places – Clubs & Venues, Coffee Bars, Restaurants, Shops, Theatres - People – In their own words – Alan Askey, Craig Strong, Metal Micky, Peter Groves, Offbeat Characters - Performance – who played at The Boat Club, the Dungeon, the Rescue Rooms, Ro
  13. I am putting a video up every Sunday (just ask if you want them more regularly and suggest songs you would like to hear - I could repost songs I've already put up). This week's offering was a hit by America in 1971. Enjoy.
  14. An article in the Nottingham Post from 2019, claimed that the restaurant on Forman Street became Punchinello in 1965. However there is a picture of the premises when it was the Empire Cafe and it became the Soup Kitchen (there is another picture of that) in 1975 or 1976. So when did it really become Punchinello?
  15. It has been suggested to me that in the 70s, the restaurant I mentioned above was either Wesleys or Westleys. Can anyone confirm this please and was it that in the 80s?
  16. Can anyone remember the name of the restaurant (in maybe the 80s or 90s) on Pepper Street before it became the 'Pretty Orchid' Thai restaurant please. It is now a bar called Pepper Rocks.
  17. Luigi's thank you - my neighbours used to work there, so I used to eat there. There was another Italian on Mansfield Road - was it Trattoria Roma and was it known as Nino's?
  18. I have on St James Street - Trattoria Conti (1967-72) La Contessa (1972-?) Le Bistro (French) Sapna (Indian) All downstairs (I believe in the basement of the Malt Cross)
  19. I thought Trattoria Conte was on St James Street? Did it move to Wheeler Gate?
  20. Can anyone help me with some queries I have from the past. - where exactly was the Don Juan coffee bar (on Parliament Street)? - what was the name of the Italian restaurant on Lower Parliament Street next or so to Sun Valley opposite the Ice Stadium (certainly in the 80s)? - what was the name of the restaurant above the shops on Wheeler Gate (now Dosa & Chutney) nextish to Eldon Chambers where the Beaujolais & Le Mistral were? More as I think of them ...
  21. I set up a group on Facebook to gather information about Nottingham (Scene Before In Nottingham), of the past and present, and I've looked at Nottstalgia to an extent to gather more. I have now put some of that information into a website of the same name. I have taken pictures to show the sites of many of those remembered, or not, establishments. It currently contains data about - clubs & venues (and bands/acts who played at some of them), shops, restaurants, coffee bars, some of the people who were around, certain events that happened. This is a work-in-progress, but I hope peop
  22. I have called this collection ‘Micky’s Choice’ as the songs were requested by Micky, my wife. Here are her reasons for choosing them. “Thank you, Maurice, for covering my selection. “The first song, ‘Man of the World’ by Peter Green, and the second ‘Blues Run The Game’ by Jackson C. Frank, both have music and words I can really relate to and feel a connection with (Nick Drake a contemporary of Jackson C. Frank covered ‘Blues Run The Game’). I take comfort in knowing I am not alone in the way I see the world. “The next two songs, Neil Young’s ‘Like A Hurricane’ and Si
  23. On a very hot day, cool down & chill. Let me entertain you - Chris Farlowe (Rolling Stones), Steve Miller Band, Small Faces, Buffalo Springfield, David Bowie.
