  1. Quick trip to Notts today , first time for a long time but sadly for my nephews funeral. Until the funeral was arranged had never heard mention of the Gedling Crematorium on Catfoot Lane , Lambley but all went smoothly . We actually got there an hour too early so had a coffee in the nearby Floralands garden centre , which was surprisingly busy. Then after the service down to the Ferry Boat at Stoke Bardolph for late lunch/wake. On our way out of town , through Netherfield and Colwick to Meadow Lane amazed at all the new house building going on. Some parts I barely reco
  2. From the Evening Post Dec 11th 1999: FREDA Dudley Ward was a member of the Birkin family, one of the most prominent in Notts. Her grandfather, Sir Thomas Birkin, lived at Ruddington Grange. He was a successful merchant who was awarded a baronet-an hereditary title-in 1905. He died in 1922. Freda's father was lace manufacturer Colonel Charles Wilfrid Birkin, Sir Thomas's fourth son. He lived at Lamcote, near Radcliffe-on-Trent, serving as Deputy Lieutenant of Notts and a JP in the county. He was also a lieutenant colonel commanding the 7th battalion of the N
  3. I see it's been announced that Jane Birkin has passed away aged 76 on 16th July 2023. Famous for the song Je T'aime and also as an actress , she had Nottm connections to the Birkin lace manufacturers. Her father was David Leslie Birkin born in 1914, who in turn was the son of First World War veteran , Harry Lawrence Birkin and Olive ( nee Russell ), who ran the lacemaking business and lived at Lincoln House in The Park. David Birkin spent much of his youth in hospital but was determined to join his brothers in the fight against Hitler and in league with
  4. We had had a Drifters compilation CD playing in the car for the last 6 months or so on continuous play . All great songs , though my wife hates one of their older ones , Money Honey, so that usually got ejected ! However we are on a longer trip up to our sons in Northants so actually had a change and put on a comp of Dusty Springfields hits. Again , all great tracks.
  5. @Simon Jervis not sure if you are including outlying districts but a while ago I did a blog on WW1 soldiers from Carlton , Netherfield and Gedling , many with pictures of those heroes. https://djwilson22.wordpress.com/2020/08/31/some-of-the-heroes-of-carlton-netherfield-and-gedling-of-ww1/
  6. My wifes late uncle , Arthur Bales , worked in the Boots insulin labs I believe in Island Street.
  7. Looks like the Sgt George Ward who died France 1918 is too old to be the brother of Annie Ward. Maybe an uncle or a cousin ? His father was given as Elijah Ward of Sneinton. Elijah Ward did have a Samuel Ward as a brother ( 1871 Census though the age is a few years out)
  8. 1911 Census theres an Annie Ward born Nottm 1905 , living 3 Little John Street, Nottingham with parents Samuel and Annie. Theres a marriage in Nottm for a Samuel Ward to an Annie Green in 1885. Theres also an elder son , George Ward born c1893 present in 1911 who may match the soldier above ?
  9. Annie Ward is at 36 Manor Street in 1921 , working at Boots , Island Street. She's lodging with a William Johnson. Her age is given as 16 years and 5 months which I think makes her born 1st qtr 1905. There's a birth for an Annie Ward in Nottm Ist Qtr 1905 with mothers maiden name Green.
  10. ITV's programmes interrupted with news flash at 10am on a number of murders at Ilkeston Rd , incidents also at Milton St and Magdala Rd. Sounds like a terrorist related incident.
  11. @DJ360 as long as you have a cigarette lighter socket you can plug in one of these FM transmitters to play your music through your car stereo . Pair the transmitter to your phone via bluetooth and then tune in the radio and the transmitter to the same unused FM wavelength. This is one I reviewed a while ago and it works but there are plenty of others available. https://www.amazon.co.uk/UNBREAKcable-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Charging-Hands-free/dp/B0BL34Y4RP?pd_rd_w=oItg4&content-id=amzn1.sym.38f90169-67d8-49b7-8ef1-61bdff262c06&pf_rd_p=38f90169-67d8-49
  12. If anyone watched Vicky McClure My Gradads War last night his accent reminded me of old Nottingham . I missed some of it but believe the 97 year old grandad was from the Meadows. Good to see random people going up to him and thanking him , shaking his hand when he revisited the Normandy beaches and memorials.
  13. I have always been a big fan of Booker T and got lots of their albums . This track was always a favourite
  14. Ha , you'd lose . Don't really remember the village or the pub at all now unfortunately but I would have had to drive back to the city so no drinking for me
  15. I've written this before somewhere but when River Deep Mountain High came out (1966 ?) , I was helping my brother renovate an old cottage in Blidworth Bottoms. My job was to chip the mortar off a pile of old reclaimed bricks !! I remember it had been a blazing hot day and we had the radio on listening to Alan Freeman's Pick of the Pops on Sunday teatime. He said something like ..."and now a new one from Ike and Tina Turner"... River Deep started and It was so different to anything else at the time, I had to stop my chiseling and listen to this amazing song . Been a favourite eve
  16. In 1974 , number 288 was a door company called Industrial Door Company of Nottingham if that rings any bells .
  17. I used to love Nibb-its too , until someone at school , whose mum I believe worked there (Porchester Rd) , said that they used to sweep the floor and pick up any Nibb-its that had fallen from the machines and put them in the retail bags. Whether it was true or not ,no idea but it put me off 'em.
  18. Only reference I can see from the Nottm Evening Post 21st Sept 1951. A crisp frying range caught fire today at the Crookie Crisp Factory, Hucknall-road, Nottingham. The City Fire Brigade attended, but the fire was out on their arrival. 31 July 1951 - Nottingham Other articles called it "Crooky Crisps" (with a y). Another report , from around the same time (but not giving the factory name ) mentioned a "crisp factory at 288 Hucknall Rd" being fined for employing a 15 year old boy beyond the allowed work times. The owner was given as a James E Cru
  19. This was in the E.P. June 26th 1968 , so may be a clue to when it closed ? The final proposal is that the Corporation should acquire the sites of six public houses from Shipstone's in exchange for three sites. Public houses The houses to be acquired are: the Barleycorn Inn Raleigh Street, the Foxhound inn Union Road, the Coachmarkers" Arms, St. Ann's Well Road, the Lincoln Arms, Canal Street, the Freemen's Arms, Alfred Street Central, and the New Town Inn, Northumberland Street. The sites are at the junction of Trowell Road and Bridge
  20. This was in the Nottm Daily Express of Sept 21st 1881 when the lease was advertised . It gives a starting date of 1859 , so assume that may have been when it was built ? (Some words missing from original as the article was not fully scanned) "A well-accustomed, Full-licensed Leasehold PUBLIC HOUSE, known as The New Town Inn, at corner of Great Freeman-street and Northumberland street, Nottingham, in the occupation of Mr. Charles Walker. This house contains bar, parlour, kitchen, club-room, five bedrooms, brew-house stabling, shed, commodious yard, and outbuildings.
  21. @Cliff Ton there's a touch of deja vu there I asked it this and a few well known names came up and some from the past ! "Make a poem about the contributors to nottstalgia.com in the style of Edward Lear" Oh, the contributors to No
  22. @Jill SparrowDon't know about that but asked it to make poem about the contributors to nottstalgia.com and it came up with this in about 5 seconds Nottstalgia Contributors' Tribute. Make a poem about contributors on nottstalgia.com ChatGPT
  23. We've got a Drifters compilation CD in our car on almost permanent play . Just for fun I asked the artificial intelligence site Chatgpt to produce love song lyrics in the style of tunes by the Drifters and within seconds it produced this. I'm certainly no poet but it seems ok to me , apart from the very last line where it's given hands to doves ! Now just need a good tune and could have a "hit record" !! This was the command : Make love song lyrics in the style of the The Drifters songs
  24. Never met him , as he died in 1940 (born 1868) , but my paternal grandfather was born in Southwell as were at least the 3 previous generations before him and in our family it was always pronounce Suthull
  25. I did look at that building and looks like it has a "1865" and "RB" above the entrance, can't read the other writing. Also if you zoom in looks like a carved moth ? above the emblem .
