  1. Some bits were retained for use elsewhere. The bell from the church is now in St Philip's Church in Chaddesden. The packhorse bridge was re-erected stone by stone further up the valley at Slippery Stones. Bits of the hall were recycled too, including the oak panelling, gateposts and other fittings. One pair of gateposts was re-erected next to the Ladybower Dam.
  2. I went on Friday. Quite startling the difference when you compare with old pics on the Web! Now Then And a closeup of Derwent Hall from a similar angle This is a shot from slightly further downstream of the village. The hall was just to the left of the photo.
  3. Safeway was taken over by Morrisons. They had to sell some stores to allow the merger to go ahead as the OFT had competition concerns about the deal. Some stores were sold to Sainsbury's - including the one on Nottingham Road Mansfield. Might that be an explanation?
  4. Clock time is artificial, so it is probably best to think of it as the middle of our day changing very slightly in Earth time as the days get longer or shorter It is all to do with the way the Earth tilts over the year, as well as revolving. The changes are very, very small in relation to a 24hr day. You get a similar effect around the longest day too.
  5. Sunsets start getting later after 13th Dec as you say, but sunrises continue to get later by a bigger margin until Dec 21st
  6. Exercise also delays dementure. Our brains are incredibly active during exercise, even though we don't really notice.
  7. Quite possibly, though it is difficult to tell the cause of symptoms - could be a bit of SAD, for example, too. Doing lots of walking seems to help - though in the bad spells I can't walk anywhere near as far as normal. EDIT Forgot to mention that climbing hills I seem to run out of energy without getting out of breath. I have to pause for a while to let my metabolism catch up - and then I can go on as normal 'til it happens again. I guess Thyroxin is a catalyst, so too little and I can't burn energy as quickly and efficiently as others.
  8. Mum is in her early 90s and had an underactive thyroid diagnosed in her mid-20s. It won't stop you having a long life. I have it too. Some people seem to think it is only women that get it, but men do too. I guess mine is probably hereditary. A GP suggested to me that more women get diagnosed because they have blood tests when they have children. Men often don't (or didn't) get blood tests at all - or at least until old age. It is not too big a problem except when I go through something they call a dark period, when I feel like a very tired zombie and can't think straig
  9. The place is Jupiter Artlands near Livingston, Scotland https://www.jupiterartland.org/visit
  10. I suspect this is an extract from a Marsden video - in which case the narrator is probably the son of the videographer.
  11. I wonder why they had to fit such big bumpers on NCT buses. You don't see them on buses belonging to other fleets
  12. The 84 went over the Forest and past the City Hospital. as did the joint East Midland/Trent service (12A/63) - both to Huntingdon Street. The 60 and 61 went via Bulwell and Hyson Green. One odd service (60A, 61A, 61B?) went via Cinderhill and Bulwell. These all went from Mount Street Just for completeness, the 62 went direct from Nottingham to Mansfield via Redhill and Ravenshead
  13. Its http://nottinghamheritagevehicles.co.uk/ According to the website the open day is on Sunday 23rd
  14. Always puzzled me why NCT bought such individually designed buses. Some of the later ones were a bit OTT. Must have added to the cost?
  15. Chenard Walcker believe it or not - a French outfit
  16. The photo is at Gosport Ferry Here are the fleet details of Provincial's ex-Nottingham buses 62-64 DAU 462, CTO 387, ETV 778 62-64 were acquired from Nottingham City Transport who bought them new in 1936/37/38. Fleet No. Reg number Chassis Type Entered Service Bodied by Withdrawn 62 DAU 462 Regent I 1954
  17. Those 2 buses are both in Provincial livery. They operated in the Gosport area. Definitely not Huntingdon Street.
  18. I thought the West Ham game was an evening match? Postponed twice before they actually played it?
  19. Must be fairly early diesel era, cos the loco has no yellow panel on the end.
  20. The number is at the top of the windows on the upper deck - route 40
  21. As far as I can find out, only the Americans had airships in WW2. A few were deployed in Gibraltar and Morocco for service in the Mediterranean, but not in the UK https://militaryhistorynow.com/2013/10/23/the-other-silent-service-u-s-navy-airships-of-world-war-two/ As airships go, these were not particularly big.
  22. Are you sure it wasn't just a barrage balloon?Airships were totally out of fashion by WW2, largely thanks to a small fire on the Hindenburg in 1937.
