I remember going to the Highfields "Lido" a lot, i remember one stinking Hot summer, I think it was 1969, because Middle Of The road's "Chirpy Chirpy Cheap, Cheap" seemed to be blasting from every, transistor radio, the place was jam packed, i remember the hot drink machine, the first i had ever seen as a kid, gave nice hot chocolate, or soup if you wanted it. I remember a little old Fashioned bakery, was it "Jewels" or "Duvals" something like that it was near my Gand parents place in Arkwight street, for Birthday Parties my Gran would bring 1d Rolls, tiny little bread rolls and Mam would put "Potted Meat" on them

After three plastic surgery operations, to remove skin cancers, I stay out of the Sun, and wear a hat & sun screen at all times, even in Winter in Australia, anyone over 30 with a suntan just looks a bit "Dirty"

As a family down town on a saturday afternoon we would always have a look around Burtons I remember the smell of the cheeses, But I remember Mam always got her "Scratchins" from Pork Farms, now aged 80 she has Diabetes??

I remember in the last days of Drury Hill a couple of young guys opened a really "Modern" book shop called "B U X" it smelled really new, lovely fresh carpet white walls and chock full of fresh smelling penguins (books that is)

Amazing to see the Redmayne & Todd building is still standing! maybe it could be converted to apartments?

Looking at those old picture it makes you realise how the Broadmarsh centre seems to "Cut Off" the city giving it a "Dead End" look i remember as a kid walking through that area to see Santa Claus at Redmayne & Todds, which would have been beyond the area where the Broadmarsh centre is?

I've been told its a dangerous place? I'm staying in Cranbrook street is that an Ok area?

A bit off topic i know but "Suckers" were frozen fruit juice on a stick? I remember once we went to london and my dad asked for five "suckers", the Cockney in the shop didn't know what they were he replied with a laugh, "Your the Sucker, Mate"

My mum is 80 and still calls her grand kids "Tripe Hounds" if they are naughty, and I remember if I wasn't asleep by the time it was 10.00 pm "The Ten O'clock Horse men will drag you away"

I remember the Brown & cream buses has having Very "Jazzy" Patterned Cut velvet upholstery on the seats

It was in a very modern building with a lot of big glass windows perhaps part of a Hotel?

I remember my Dad taking us to an Indian restaurant for the first time in the early 70's or late 60's it was upstairs somewhere in maid Marion Way us kids just had mango ( for the first time) with Ice cream!!

I Remember the wonderful sweeping staircase with the Black "Vitrolite" glass walls, and the Restaurant with the fountain on the top floor, which had a sort of mezzanine level obove, what happened to it? My Granddad had an old fashioned barbers shop in Arkwright Street, close to the Portland Swimming baths, i remember visiting with my dad after we had been swimming on sunday mornings and he would be cutting the hair of his friends.

I was there at Ellis Guildford from 1971-73, I remember a lot of the teachers they were all a bit eccentric, Mr Barks was the Maths teacher he was a bit Of a " Paper Tiger" my dad knew him and we went to his house once and he was charming! they used to call him "Fred Boots" cos he had squeaky shoes!!! he was my form teacher and my maths teacher, I was & still am dyslexic when it comes to numbers, He couldn't understand why I was bottom of the class in maths and 1st or second in all other subjects!!then there was Miss Bryan, who was very nice, but very 1940's in her dress sense she was rel

Thanks for your welcome, I now live in Perth, Western Australia, which was a lovely colonial city back in the early 1970's, sadly the mining boom of the 80's saw the tearing down of many fine buildings of the late 19th century, consequently they can't get it right and keep tearing down and replacing every 20 years or so. I hope to be in town for a weekend towards the end of August so hopefully the weather should be ok, and it will be light till quite late so i will be able to get out and about, I don't drive anymore due to poor eyesight, and hope to go on a few day trips via coach to places s
