  1. My memories of the El T are from its origins, along with the normal electrical installation that one would expect for that type of premises there were hidden Microphones all over the place so the strange person who owned it could listen to what people were saying about him. This guy also owned a car who's previous owner was I believe Mussolini, there was a report in the Nottm Post regarding the car.

  2. I confess to being a numbers nut. Having just entered the date on a form as 10/12/13, (it could have been 10 12 13 in boxes), it occurred to me that since the year 2003 we have at some point in the year had sequential numbers in the date i.e. 01/02/03 and that after tomorrow 11/12/13 we will not have this occur again until it is 01/02/03 in 90 years & 52 days time.

  3. Carl, our own Carlton Lad has done well tonight by retaining his titles, things didn't look good for him in any round up to him prevailing as the ref stopped him punishing Grove. As Carl himself said he had got free shots at his opponents at the end and serious damage could have been done if the ref had not stepped in. Well done Carl.

  4. Spot On Ayup. Have rerouted as your post, have had 10mins of 1 channel (red) , 5mins of Icefilm (skyfall) and now watching Boxing from Manchester, First fight stopped in the third Andy Lee Stopped the Hungarian and now waiting for the Froch fight to cheer on the local lad. If your interested its on Sport Devil /First Row, from Sky Box Office, not sure what time the main bout starts. Thanks for the tip.

  5. Have just got the latest updates to xbmc sorted, any video searched & streaming inside 30 secs. including some pre retail stuff THEN along comes a high court judgement instructing British ISP's to Block Streaming. Most of the good stuff has now already gone and the rest to follow. Maybe there is a way around it but for now it seems too many were enjoying free fun & learning.

  6. One of the things I failed to mention in post 123# was that most of the 'Fothergill' buildings in the town, according to my old boss were designed by Fothergill Watson and he believed the first one he built under his change of name was at the time his offices on Clinton street were demolished & his new one was built on George Street.

  8. Mick, I see you are having a go, be assured it will get easier, but at first it can be confusing but later with use it is very user friendly.

Having done what you have, have you loaded 'fusion'. Also, when you click the icon to start xbmc what appears first on screen, does it say 'wizard edition' then immediately change to a 'Bar' across with Videos in the centre & Files & add-ons underneath it. If so, click on add-ons and say what you see there.

  9. Thackery's Lane must have been named after somebody?

Named after John Thackery, Grandson of Joseph Thackery of the Lace Manufacturing Trade. Joseph came to Nottingham from Manchester to start business due to a spat on Machine Breaking in Lancashire, 1870's. The business past from father to son etc.. His Grandson John built Forest Mills in Radford in 1840 which closed in 1950 which was about the time many Nottingham Lace Manufacturers shut up shop. After the Great Exhibition of 1851 where international recognition of his product came from attaining Gold Medals John took on a Partner, Thomas Hickling. This partnership lasted until 1870 when Thackery took over all assets of the company. John Thackery was also Lord Mayor of Nottingham Twice, 1854 & 1866.

I know nothing of his interests in JAM. Jane, your Aunt Flo was probably right, whilst John Thackery died in 1886, one year after your grandmother was born, the lace business carried on until 1950 as I have mentioned earlier. WHY THE MENTION OF JAM?

  10. Alan Rose post 23# of this topic brought back some memories. About the time Alan started work at Elastic Yarns my Dad's best mate, Eric Cook, also worked there. He was a driver/chauffeur there. My memories are of him bringing lots of large Machinery packing cases to my home from the Daybrook factory I believe, after a factory refurb. I would have been about 12 at the time. I made a large shed out of 4 x 2 and the packing case sides, about 12ft by 10ft with a flat sloping roof. When I fitted the roof I was so unset that it began to sag as I fitted the roof panels. Dad sorted my though, it only needed a prop in the middle. Over the years it started to rot and finally I knocked it down and burnt it when I was 68.

One year earlier than this construction fete, Eric provided me with a much treasured visit to Trent Bridge to see the Test Match against the Australians. Apparently, for every Test Match at Trent Bridge, Elastic Yarns provided a chauffeured car for the visiting team. (a Humber I think it was), who on this occasion stayed at the Black Boy Hotel. Dad & I were taken to the ground after Eric had done his duties on each of the five days and driven in through the big green gates.

My cricketing heroes of the day were Len Hutton, Dennis Compton Jim Laker & Alec Bedser plus of course Joe Hardstaff, (the middle of the three Joe Hardstaff's). I was also looking forward to seeing Don Bradman & Ray Lindwall from the visitors.

England batted first and were abysmal, Jim Laker was the top scorer out of a total of about 160, Hardstaff was out second ball I think for a duck. The Aussies made about 500, Bradman making about 130 on them. It looked all over for England after 2 maybe three early wickets in the second innings. It looked like it would be all over on the Saturday but Hutton & Crompton rallied as did Hardstaff to make about 450 for the innings at the close on Monday. Aussies only needed about 100 to win & when Bradman went early for a duck I got exited but to no avail. As least I thought Bradman's duck made up for Joe's on the 1st day. Eric got me an autographed team sheet, goodness knows what happened to it, I did look for it many years later after seeing an identical one framed on a wall in the Black Boy Foyer whilst working there. To me all of this was Nottstalgic.

  11. That's brought back a few memories Jigsaw. I went to the bowl virtually from when AMF opened it. It must have been early 60's I believe. I remember Connie in the bar and the name Syd Vaughan, I believe he was the original Manager, Bill Bingham was his assistant, a fine bowler himself, he played with Billy Grimes, Billy Grinsall, Linsey Scorer, Ron Sheppard & I believe Billy Firth in a Five Man Team called The Panthers sponsored by Reg King the Bookmaker who also sponsored the Panthers Ice Hockey Team. Shortly after Fred came along on the door, he came from Ilkeston, quite a character. Another friend I remember well was someone who probably many on this site will remember from many venues of entertainment as a fine Host, John Kelly & his wife Jean. When John came to the bowl to work part time he was a Black & White Taxi Driver. About the time he became Assistant Manager, I remember him wanting to be rid of his Cab Licence. One evening he was sat outside the bowl with a mate in the back of the cab counting carrier bags full of notes given by an Asian Guy who was desperate to drive the cab away. Later on he became Manager of the Humber Bowl at Ilkeston, A venue that took many of Nottingham's best Bowlers to Ilkeston because of better & faster bowling lane conditions. John was well know to many of the country's finest jazz musicians who always went out of their way to perform in the bowl bar if invited. From there John moved on to running a large Bingo Hall on the way to Derby, Was it Chaddesdon or something similar, maybe Gala? He was very successful there but I think me missed being with normal people (I'm not calling Bingo Players, but every day every week, you know what I mean). Then it became Pub Management, Charlie Two Top Valley was first I think, another was on the Ring Road not far from Raleigh Island. Anyone that never knew John's hospitality missed a treat. I Remember the Skol Five team Katyjay, White Shirts I believe, I'm surprised I never met you, Jan. was always with me.

  12. Ayupmeduck,

I hear everything you say about the MX Box/G Box and it only costs $US126 total for the ADDITIONAL remote, (You do have to use two don't you?) I suppose I have overlooked a bog standard monitor on a PC, maybe because I have the same problem as you with the eyes, and have been using a Fujitsu Siemens HD Monitor for the last four years.

That being said, I am sure you must agree as you have already said in a previous post, these units cost over twice the amount over here, (Best available here is £130 for both), is more difficult to set up without the additional mini keyboard your good lady has just bought you, and even this is more fiddly that a standard keyboard and mouse if you are holding a cup of tea at the same time. More importantly purhaps, You should also remember that most of the guys over here are of am age and posible circumstances that they have to count the pennies in with the pounds. Surely the advice to 'Try Before You Buy' for 'NOTHING' more than a little time is sound advice. Do you not agree? As for tying up the computer, I personally can ownly watch one at once.

  13. I still cannot see the point of set top boxes on TV when you can download XBMCHUB.COM direct onto your Windows PC for nothing.

There are fewer bugs this way than with Android Devices. The latest 5th October release by the XBMC Team to factory restore the 12.2 Frodo version, RESETTING XBMC TO A CLEAN STATE AND SUPERCONFIGURE IT WITH THE NEW WIZARD IN 5 MINUTES. Its Amazing. This being done you have all the ADDONS you will need already configured. The one thing you need to avoid in imposter XBMC Sites, just log in to www.xbmchub.com and you are safe. Go to Downloads, there you will find eight different O.S supported, including Windows, Mac etc. take your pick & do it. The main Addons I use are 1 Channel, Hulu, Ice Films, Sports Devil & USTV NOW. This gives me all 2013 release videos back to 19 0ught Blob. I even watched a Valentino one the other night, Blood & Sand I believe it was called. Give it a try all you provide in 49.5Mb of disk space. No point in buying £80 plus equipment with silly handheld mini keyboards, use the gear you already have.

  14. Carni, Do you remember your LOCAL Milkman, Mr. Leach, next to the school, & Beryl his delivery girl, she was a brilliant footballer.

While we are doing do you remember, how about Roy Skellington the barber & Sunday School Teacher, he in still working delivering the church mag at 91years, slowed up a bit now though.
