  1. Re #23. Would've looked better with a nice steam loco hauling a Grantham train.
  2. Catfan I remember it well. I once attended a talk by Tony Horton about Strelley Hall and the village. I also bought the booklet he produced which I still have.
  3. Happy Days. I used to deliver their milk at the horse in the mid 70s.
  4. Has its own central heating. It must be Great Central heating. Sorry..............
  5. I saw that one Michael. I remember one roadshow in which a young lass brought loads of pre-war railway travel posters she found in her grand fathers attic (or somewhere like that. She had about fifteen and I can't remember the exact valuation but I think it was something like 3 grand for the ordinary ones and 5 grand for the ones with famous engines depicted. Anyway, it came to a tidy sum. Her parting shot? 'I've got another fifty or so at home'. There was lots of stuff around in the sixties. When my grandfather (steam loco driver at 16a) refused to learn diesels at the age of 62, he was gi
  6. You want cheap booze? Just get some demi-johns and then go scrumping or BlackBerrying. After initial expense on equipment, you'll get cheap booze and it's very nice. Especially banana wine which caused me to have to carry my wife to bed.
  7. It's easy to moan about the weather. But remember this. We live in a small island sandwiched between the weather systems brought about by the Atlantic Ocean and the freezing cold systems which waft in from Siberia, not to mention the varied systems from south Europe. Not forgetting the ever changing jet stream. Most of the time we seldom get really bad extremes (like huge tornados or months of crippling frost), and when we do it's something to marvel at. We have some of the most fertile green scenery in the world and despite the variations in the weather, I love it. And like everyone els
  8. If it's a recorded message I just put the receiver down. If it's a real person then I give them some Bulls--t. At least its a job for them.
  9. Great News. Nice to hear things have turned out so well.
  10. Terrence, so did I in Glasgow. But if we had got up to any of their tricks we would have been sacked, or even arrested.
  11. We had a Co-op grocery van used to call on Wigman Road in the 50s and early 60s. The delivery man was called Ted and he always drove that van in reverse. He would stop every hundred yards or so, jump out, cup his hands to his mouth and shout 'Helloooooooo'. Years later in the mid 70s, I did a stint on the milk rounds starting at Beechdale depot. I met him there - he was a milk-roundsman by then. We als0 had milk deliveries daily, mostly Co-op, but also a little lady from Northern Dairies who also used to drive the vehicle in reverse. The co-op baker used to compete with the 'Bakers Boy' who
  12. While my poor wife gets bitten by every fly, midge and flying buzzing creatures on the planet, they never seem to touch me. I must be poisonous.
  13. Is he going to tell St Pater ' I 'ate you'.
  14. Re #20. I have a mid 20th century OS 1inch to the mile map in my possession which has no sign of the numerous RAF aerodromes in East Notts but which we all knew were there. I found the map in a skip when they cleared out the locker rooms at Nottingham carriage sidings in the mid 80s preparatory to closure. (It reopened a few years later).
  15. David there must be lots of that stuff going on in caravans.
  16. I can't stand..................hic. Hic.
  17. My cousin was a tool maker. He used to work at ROF and sometimes left to work at Raleigh Bicycles.
  18. WAKEY WAKE.....................HAY!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Well Donnyred. Our paths must have crossed as I worked as a shunter at Nottingham Carriage Sidings from 1980 when I progressed from carriage cleaning until 1985 when I transferred to Derby. You must have been one of the many guards that did the Cot-Rat and Huck - Rat. Remember Aubrey Britton and George Hunt? They were also guards.
  20. Not my favourite of the Mersey sound but she was part of my youth. RIP chuck.
  21. I think signature is on the way out. It will be fingerprint, facial or voice recognition.
  22. That's how I see it Plantfit.
  23. At least that song will live forever.
  24. I've got loads, but the best is the chime whistle on an A4 steam locomotive. Really it's a privilege to be able to hear at all.
