  1. ...and that is worse than "failing to prepare"
  2. On board ship I think it was called "Chase the P*sser"
  3. I would like to come back as my wife.....just to see if I really am such a grumpy old bu**er as she claims. ( a claim that I dispute most strongly mind you ).
  4. God Almighty but think of your breath after six months of sleeping. It would be absolutely rank. Like..a Japanese Sumo wrestlers jock strap only worse.
  5. Not too sure what I have done here but it hasn't appeared as I had hoped.
  6. Although I have been on holiday in the States many times and taken several thousand snaps these are my favourites. They fit into this category of "if I had got my camera then.." This first one was taken just after we had driven over Wolf Creek Pass. I had stopped to take a lovely shot of the mountains and the snow when I spotted this Coyote. He had some thing on his mind and I relised that he was hunting. I anticipated this picture but just as I snapped away, the person in the car shifted and so it isnt as sharp as I would have liked. But beggers cant be choosers. [/ This next shot was take
  7. So its appearing to be just a locally played game after all. The version that my father played , and tried to teach me, was the version similar to Rummy but with an imaginary card. The winner usually had two sets of three and a four hand, i.e. ace, two three, three sixes and a nine, jack, queen and king with the imaginary as the ten.
  8. DONT PANIC MODERATORS, it isn't what you think. I am simply wondering if any body on this site ever played the pub game called Koo-can? My Dad played it all the time in the Westdale tavern and it seemed to be the only card game that men ever played.
  9. My oath but thats the first time in living memory that I can recall sunny days in Notts.
  10. I remember that it was Mr Flint who took our form for rugby and a damned fine instructor he was. Made sport very enjoyable. Mr Salmon was my English Teacher and I remember him with affection because he had quite a job on his hands yet carried out his lessons with gentility and humour. For some reason he never knew that I had been to so many schools since the age of five ( about ten including ACHS ) and was rather disruptive in class, yet he was willing to persevere with me and even though it didn't dawn on me until quite some years later, he had been successful in giving me a love of the en
  11. never stand up in a canoe when wearing a bergan.
  12. One of my memories was of going , for the first time, into the Cafe in Netherfield called "Stans". Bought a cup of frothy coffee and put me thrupence into the machine. Got five ball bearings to shoot out and somehow racked up over four hundred points. Every one shouted out " YESssss" I said.." whats up then ". Stan came over, checked the score and said" right! heres yer fags. I was given four packs of Woodbines and didn't even smoke. Gave three packs to me dad and got a clip about me head for the trouble with a ..." don't let your Mum catch you smoking, now bu**er orf" I could not have been m
  13. In order to get the children asleep on Christmas eve, delay opening your Advent Calendar by several days. They will think its still a long way away and not get excited.
  14. If you dont mind, I will borrow that very useful tip as I know several folk who are too mean to buy an address book.
  15. I am beginning to believe that my Dad pulled my leg quite a lot. It wasn't until I joined up at the age of 17 that the kidding stopped but some of it I still believed for many years after because he never said that he was fibbing. Some of the stories were true as other people have told me that,...He could have made it big time as a singer.....He could have made it as a boxer but couldn't control his temper...was in the royal Navy but was medically discharged due to an injury sustained down the mine as a sixteen year old. However sub captain...No way.In the latter stages of my military career
  16. Now that is a fascinating web site. many thanks for that. Seems that...like being a submarine captain during the war, this is another "feed" from me dad.
  17. A road speed of 60MPH is stating that no -one can drive at a greater speed. It is not a mandatory minimum speed restriction. It is pe rfectly legal to drive at a lower speed providing that you are not presenting you or your vehicle as a road or safety hazard. Cutting corners is acceptable if carryed out safely. It is known as " Ironing out the bends and I was taught the system when doing my Staff Car drivers course and my advanced driving course.
  18. I do know that , in the sequel there is a scene where the main characters are preparing to get into a train wagon in a Goods station and if you look at the lettering on the side of the wagon there is stamped the letters denoting that " this wagon belongs to the royal navy.
  19. Ford Consul? is it that old or just seems it's that way.
  20. Following on from the above...like everything else in the house, it is a flat surface and as such becomes the depository for any junk that isn't instantly allocated a place It needs de-cluttering regularly.
  21. I bought the Bose one from PC world some six months back and now would not be without it. The TV sound is now permanently turned to Mute as in comparison , sounds so tinny and weak.
  22. My father once told me that the movie.."the Guns of Naverone" based on the book by Alistair maclean, has scenes of mountain climbing that were filmed as people scaled the walls outside Nottingham castle. Does any one know if this is true or just a silly thing told to a boy by his dad.?
  23. You must have been based in Khormakser then. I was out in Little Aden behind the refinery. The first few weeks I had difficulty in sleeping due to the noise of the air-con and the light from the burning-off of the waste fumes from the refinery. I did enjoy my time (mostly) up-country as there was a strange beauty about those mountains.
  24. Just recalled two more names from that period. Roy and john telfer (d). Lived on Adbolton lane up from the Westdale tavern.
  25. My parents became £10 poms and took the family to Australia from Beeston where I was born. Some years later we returned and eventually we were given a miners house on Phoenix avenue in Gedling. I attended Westdale lane school for the one term and then was transferred to Priory Road school until I took the eleven-plus and left for a time at Eastwood Sec Tech and then Country High. However, having attended schools in Australia and on ships and then varying places within Notts I cannot remember any ones name other than two people. The first was a guy called Fred Dabell from Beeston and the second
