  1. nice lupins and hostas Compo. 14 years ago at my place i split a small show of blue agapanthus, set this side of a west wall, the most I had was 140 but this year ive counted 300, can't wait for the big blue heads to show through, although it looks as though some of the heads might be a little smaller probablly due to the amount do you think? When they bloom, which looks to be in the next two to three weeks, i'd like to put them on a photo as you tourself has done. but i'm afraid i haven't the experience to that just yet.
  2. I don't recall the name Hart. I believe the union man was a chap by the name of stan fl--------s, such a long time ago, I don't know wether i'm aloud to give out his name wthout permission. I do recall an Eric Wilson i don't know wether its the same one, could his wife be Ada? if not, sorry to dissapoint, davidw.
  3. I lived for seven years down dunstan street, happy days then. you could walk down the street any time of day and you'd always see a railwayman. I believe there was a chippy near the first crossing on the same side as the fox and hounds pub. went to the ritz many times as a youngster, sometimes queueing nearly to the beeroff when a classic film was shewn. sat many times on the regal steps, you had to ask an adult to take you in if it was an 'A' film and then split up inside. much different to-day.   4. hi davidw you are quite right it is Edith Daykin. wife to Harry. i knew them both. After I left colwick loco as a passed cleaner, I re-joined again as an oil and greaser and worked with Harry. hope this little bit of info helps.
  5. I knew Beryl Tivey, and I had the pleasure of working for Jack Tivey and what a great great chap he was. he sang in the carlton male voice choir.

I worked as a passed cleaner at colwick loco from 1957 sad day when it closed down, i remember george mallard cleaner foreman, nice gent. anyone out there remember him? netherfield was booming then. bournes factory, i had a sister work there. also remember the clock on the wall and the workers piling out when the hooter went off. I believe there was a fish shop on the corner of deabil street that was coal fired.
  7. Thanks for the welcome messages forum members, please bear with me. I'm a very new member. I will try to reply as I steadily go along, I've read some of your topics, brilliant. how you manage to put photos on here i'll never know. perhaps one day i'll manage it when I get used to sending messages i'll dig out a few memories of carlton and topics etc. ps. I was born in kirks buildings, Pearsons farm was only a few minutes away, I remember Straws the bakers opposite the windsor castle pub, huckerby's the butchers and Sid Atkins the butcher who took over from him, shentalls grocery shop, Joe Smith butchers Bert fisher the barbers. I worked on the milk round for Mr Pearson in my school holidays and at weekends. we would often stop for petrol at the garage come blacksmith just below straws, petrol then was something like three and sixpence a gallon if my memory serves me right. please bear with me friends i'm very new to the internet. look forwo
