  1. compo - if I remember correctly you made cider from apples on the railway embankment. What sort of apples were they and what was the cider like?
  2. Fishing Loch Watten again is on my 'to do' list.
  3. I tried collecting Fuggles from the hedgerows when working in Hereford. Never got to dry them out properly to release the aroma though. I might try growing some and having another go. Wouldn't mind trying Kent Goldings in France. Should do well given a hot Summer. A pall is viewing a cidre press and scratter in France for me today. Planning to bring them back to the UK if I get them
  4. Nice pics of a nice place compo. Has Loch Watten frozen over?
  5. Jaysuss Compo! That must have taken some getting over!! Doubt if I would have had the strength to have overcome that. Physical shocks are relatively easy to get over, but emotional and betrayal issues..........hmmmm
  6. Compo - We have just been booked for 3 nights in Glasgow. I used to travel around there on business and saw massif improvements over a 40 year period. Gosh, was it rough! Drove through the Gorbals area a few times - never stopped there! Looking forwards to this trip and the following week in the Highlands. At home here in Staffordshire we live in a bubble. A green village with none of the social problems found in the cities. Even Stafford town centre is relatively free of beggars and homeless. Saw a homeless guy tucked up in a doorway last week - first one I've seen here. I visit Plymouth
  7. I had a go on 'Ring the Bull' a couple of years ago. After a bit of practice I was ringing about every 3rd shot. Played it a lot as a student in the 50's. The secret markings on the rear cave wall have gone. These 'markings' were targets to aim for when doing trick shots - the double and treble. Won a few pints at that game .
  8. The culprit is definately a cat. A pretty little grey and white thing named Pebble. I've seen her in waiting several times. Sometimes she lays out on the wall covering the seed, just out of spite. It's the annual bird count in a week or so. Just hope she is not about then.
  9. Not a bird in sight near the feeding place this morning. Most unusual? Went out to replenish bird seed and apples only to find a load of dove feathers on the wall. Ruined my day.
  10. At Berridge the metal work shop was in the prefab annex on Nuthall Rd., next to the tannery (phew!). The teacher was a quiet man who got us absorbed into making things. Never any trouble. Can't remember his name though. We also walked to Nuthall Rd annex for tech drawing, gardening and football. I enjoyed the days at Nuthall Rd. I also enjoyed woodwork although Mr Kendrick was feared by all. I never saw him punish anyone. His technique was to put the fear of God into everyone with his yard long steel ruler. He would pace around the benches and whack it on the bench threateningly. The steel rul
  11. Interestingly, battery powered trams are being introduced to Birmingham shortly. New battery technology makes this possible due to the power requirements for hills. The brief for battery powered trams in Birmingham could almost apply to Nottingham. I was amazed to read that a battery powered tram was invented in 1888.
  12. Remember when we used to go ice skating on ponds and the canal. Martins pond and Iremongers pond were the usual places. Even the Trent froze a bit near the banks in the 50's.. There was a marquee set up some Winters on University lake for the skaters refreshments and music..
  13. Our son is a teacher and we are very proud of him. He was a punk rocker and went off the rails sometimes. We always supported him and welcomed his mates at home and they showed us a lot of respect. He still has the punk rock band (The Victims) with two original members. He grew up at his own speed and has always ploughed his own furrow. He detested school. Left school and went labouring for a builder, then a bit of picture framing before deciding that he was going to do something more fulfilling. He trained as a nurse and qualified to SRN level. He became disillusioned with NHS management and
  14. The Robin Hood - a very old local pub/eatery burnt down on Christmas eve. Loxely and Ferrers are local names and places here east of Stafford and are said to be associated with Robin Hood. No historian just saying..
  15. Trying to remember the very first Bulwell Jazz Club held at the rear of St Marys Church C1960. The entrance to the club room was up some outside wooden stairs. The band were only OKish and a work mate played trombone. He would slide 3 notes and blow one . Think his name was Bob....? This was a different venue to the one described by Chulla at the Liberal club.
  16. Going deaf and having music stolen from me was like shredding a piece of my soul. Music is so important and essential to human existence. Even when the secrets of quantum theory are revealed and understood, music will retain it's mysteries.
  17. Yes - when things had settled down after year Q1 the Earth days became shorter and Earth year longer. Tilt, spin and orbit had been affected.
  18. Writing story line for my daughter (based on Wizard Oscar stories I told my children in the 70's) One of the key points in time is when quantum computers were integrated within the human brain C2060. The next key moment was when a quantum/nuclear accident happened 11 years later in a secret underground establishment in the US Year Q1 replaced year 2072.
  19. Fly fishing boat seat, Silky Zubat arborists saw (the dogs), A nice single malt, Various fine wines and cheeses. Water colour of the Trip and an Enid Blyton book 'Five on Brexit Island' Absolute meyhem here with the dogs bouncing about among the discarded pile of prezzie wrappings while excitedly towsing their new toys. Can't imagine what it will be like when the other half of the family arrive at midday.
  20. Neddy Seagoon always knew the correct time because he had written it down on a piece of paper
  21. I miss darkazana's comments about this important time in our lives.
  22. Also the enamelled tin matchbox covers with pictures of a film star on.
