  1. Wonder if the residual ozone could affect the bacteria in a septic tank?
  2. As a young boy our local hero was a boxer. Think his name was Johnny Carrington. He used to train on the streets where I lived and I sometimes ran along with him for a short distance. On one of these runs just before Goose fair arrived I asked him if he was boxing there. He said "No, they won't let me cos I take their money". His regular run was down Southey St., Lake St., then up Peveril St.
  3. stage one of marketing strategy and then it gets more refined. Quite daft really but an element of truth.
  4. "Po 'n Nooooos" = Newspaper sellers. A variation was "Noooos 'n Po", depending on which area you lived in..
  5. Some older members may have bought buttons, zips, cotton etc., from my dad in the 50's. Photo's brought a lot of memories back, esp the Palais where I met the wife in 1960.
  6. Enjoyed reading that Carni. I attended a meeting of the Canal and River Trust recently as a representative of our fishing club. The Trust It's about protecting, and sharing the waterways with everyone. There is talk about using horses again - that could be fun when there is a fishing contest taking place Unfortunately some angler think that the canal is there just for them, forgetting that if it were not for narrow boat enthusiasts etc., there would be no canals to fish in! I see the canal and towpath as a very sociable throughfare and always have a cheery word for passers by whether they
  7. Not into steam but it looks like a real 'chuff chuff' complete with coal tub, as I remember as a kid Some years ago when in Delhi, I had a spare day and visited the National Rail Museum. It was just something to do for the morning. Although not a rail enthusiast I ended up staying there all day. Absolutely fascinating. Engines from all over the World. Various gauges. Mostly of UK manufacture. I was amazed at how many engine manufacturers there were in the UK, must have been ten or more. The prettiest engines were from Switzerland. Saddle tanks with narrow gauges for the hilly regions.
  8. #259 I knew Malcolm Fretwell. Either from Palin St youth club or Berridge. I lived on Peveril St 1942/1957.
  9. This post reminded me about Greenwood prams Old Basford. They closed in 1981 and the premises turned into flats. Roger Greenwood the son of the owner in the 50's started his apprentiship at the ROF the same year as me. Greenwod and Co have an interesting history. They started in and old mill, powered by the R Leen which had to be diverted to stop flooding.
  10. Bees, wasps and hornets are OK if you leave them alone and calmly go about your business. Some people provoke them by wafting their arms around and shouting or even screaming. I only deal with hornet and wasps nests when they come into the house roof or porch. Some years ago I built a Scare heron. Like a Scare crow but set up to sit by the pond. The Scare heron was dressed in and old work shirt, jeans, wellingtons and an old football for a head. Anyway, the hornets built a nest in the football head. I used to sit next to the Scare heron and observe the hornets. Quite sociable creatures if lef
  11. Thanks for that Siddha. I understand it now (cough).
  12. Why on earth do people want to destroy bees nests???
  13. #29 that's what relativity is about.....and I don't understand it...... Space ship #1 accelerates to 90% speed of light. It launches space ship #2 that accelerates to 90% speed of light relative to space ship #1. Space ship #2 launches space ship #3 and it accelerates to 90% speed of light relative to space ship #2. From the Earth launching site of spaceship #1, is space ship #3 travelling at 2.7 x speed of light? I wonder if there is an undiscovered phenomena that causes light to accelerate? Won' sleep much tonight - that bleddy Chula!
  14. A raised area with shallow tubs of water will suffice. Just plant some reed mace or anything you find in a local pond and the wildlife will arrive. Insects such as corixa and giant water beetles will wing their way in, attracted by the water. And of course the birds will love it.
  15. Do you have a pond darkazana? It is amazing what wildlife a pond attracts, especially if it is well planted and left to go natural.
  16. Must be you place in France Lizzie?
  17. I see Paganism as 'the old ways' and Nottstagia is about the old ways, among other things. There are many posts on here about ghosts and haunted houses but they are not associated with spiritualism or religion.. Believe what you like
  18. Thank you darkazana. Following that difficult period in our lives things did get much better and our whole family have enjoyed peace and success in our own ways, So maybe the snow was a sign? I have a very big ( 30" trunk) Larch tree to fell. Reading up on Larch trees reveals that they, along with Birch are used in Pagan ceremonies. It will hurt me to fell this Larch tree because I have always regarded her as the matriarch of the hundreds of trees on the fermette. Not the biggest tree on the property but the most impressive, with her wide spreading branches that embrace all around like a gua
  19. Anyone remember the call up for National Service medicals? As an apprentice, my call up was deferred until 21. In 1959 a bus load of us 21 year olds from Raleigh, ROF, RR etc., were sent to Mansfield for our call up medicals. We handed our bits of paper to the officer at the door of what looked like a community centre hall and he told us to strip off. I remember the scene vividly. There were 5 or 6 desks spaced around the hall and one in the middle. Each desk manned by a doctor. Strip bollock naked and carrying our neat (oh yes, the officer made us fold our clothes into a neat pile, so milita
  20. #39 I watched the same program colly. Fascinating stuff. There must have been billions spent and millions of man/computer hours of calculations done, only to result in a question mark!
  21. Darkanza - Our son was born on 30th April 48 years ago and it snowed heavily that day. Would 'those of the old ways' have read anything into this I wonder? It was a very worrying and dramatic time for us. I was in the Eye Infirmary, in bed with both eyes padded and my head held stationary, while Mrs PP was giving birth in Peel St. I had just been made redundant too. So 30th April is an important time of reflection for us.
  22. What is the situation with The Spread Eagle on Alfreton Rd these days? My grandparents, aunties and uncles lived next door and I spent a lot of time there in the 40's and 50's.
