  1. I went to Peoples College, Broadmarsh, in 1954/58. 50 years ago I had just moved to a new Wimpy house in Keyworth and the wife was just about to have our daughter.
  2. Yes - I had a 'batted tab' a few times! Just to confirm that and apple core is a coggin. Most people pronounce our family name as Coggin although it is spelt Coging and pronounced Coe-ging. I was nicknamed Apple at school, as in apple coggin.
  3. I have a box full of war letters between mum and dad. My sister has read them and keeps trying to get me to read them - but I can't pluck up the courage to do it. I know how hard life was for my mum and dad and I worry that some saddening things will crop up. Also I feel that I would be trespassing of their privacy. I know - I really should read them though.
  4. Brilliant video radfordbred. The 1949 clip reminded me of the best parts of Goose Fair - watching the men setting up and testing the engines, Then going at first light on Sunday morning looking for lost money. Best pickings were under where the wollsers had been. Found a two bob piece once among smaller change. It used to amaze me how Goosefair site could transform almost overnight from and empty bit of sandy grassland to something so big and vibrant. Then by Sunday afternoon it was all gone. It was a bit like a huge magic trick. I was always so sad on that Sunday afternoon and already lookin
  5. #13 Yes I remember Don Lilley. A very good rider. A bit older than me, as was Lin. Lin was a real star on the grass track. He wore a striking racing vest that had big stars on it - way before it's time in those days of drab cycling clothing. btw Lizzie - have been looking through some old result sheets and found one where John Aslin beat me by a few seconds in a 25 mile TT held in 1961. He was 6th and I was 7th out of 120. He used to come to the grass track meetings too. Little did we know at that time that he would compete with some of Europe's best pro riders later in his career.
  6. Thanks for that link Rob. It brings back so many memories. I stayed at the 'Ranch' many times and did my first sub hour ride on the O2. About 3 years ago I was sat next to Barry Hoban in the pub after the Stone Nocturne Town race - I said "hi Barry, last time I saw you was at the Ranch" that made him chuckle. The ranch was such a happy place. There are so many stories - Walt's crow pie, the 'tandem' toilets, sheets that were only 12" wide, the 'Booty' bed - could go on. I have seen Lionel James and his wife Jacky in recent years - used to race against him on Melbourn Park grass tack in the
  7. I googled up Berridge and Pipewood and ended up here. Can't leave the bloody site alone now! Mick - you have something to answer for. Brilliant site. Ta.
  8. Just found this topic and can confirm that the Koh-i-Nor (Just below the bank on Alfreton Rd backing onto Peveril St.) was the first in Nottingham. The owner was Mr Udin and his son, Royce Udin went to Berridge and was also in the scouts with me. The resto was operating before 1950. There was always speculation about Mrs Udin - being white but Royce was almost black like his dad. Really nice lad was Royce. About 30 years ago I went in for a curry and asked after Royce. I was told that he had returned to India and was a very very very rich man.
  9. #6 Nick Loasby? I knew him well. Got loads of racing pics by him. He took our wedding photo's as well.
  10. Rob L - how could I forget the Sherwood! Just found a result sheet for Sherwood Cycling Club Open 50. 1965. President J Hemstock. Event sec HG Morris. Sherwood riders J Watson, D Tremayne, RJ Bates. Other Nottm clubs mentioned - Nottm Pheonix, Long Eaton Paragon and Beeston RC, ..and of course Ericsson Wheelers with arguably the best British time trialist of all time Ray Booty. The first man to ride 100 miles in less than 4 hours.
  11. No. Av got no moneh. Do you remember Trent Bridge after a match? Crowds leaving the Forest ground shoulder to shoulder taking up all of the road, walking back towards Nottm. No chance of any motor vehicles passing.
  12. There used to be a lot of cycling clubs in Nottingham. Here is a list from the 50's and 60's. These are clubs that I belonged to at some time.. Nottingham Sphere CC, Nottingham Castle BC, Hucknall Road Club and N&D Clarion. Then there were - Nottingham Wheelers, Basford Wheelers and a couple more I cant remember. Of the four clubs that I belonged to, only one remains - N&D clarion but now as Nottingham Clarion being separated from Heanor Clarion.
  13. Looked thru the posts and can't find this one. Usually called across the street on a Saturday morning.
  14. I left Berridge Xmas 53 which was the first year that the 15+ was offered where pupils could stay on for a year to take 'O' levels. It was a joke really and only 2 lads took the offer up. The rest of us had to start work and earn some housekeeping. I never took the 11+ due to illness but when I was 13 I was offered a place at Tech College because of my good exam marks. Like an idiot I ripped up the offer letter that I should have given to my parents. Realising my stupidity, at 14 I signed on for nightschool at the school on Carlton Hill, saying that I was 15 years old. True to type I continued
  15. I put this post in the wrong place - so here it is again. I cycled out to Pipewood yesterday. It is totally overgrown and derelict. I managed to get into the site via the car park of the Rugely school that has been built on the Hamstall Ridware end of the site. One dorm has been recently burnt down. It was so derelict and overgrown that it was difficult to get my bearings. I could make out where the central lawn was, in front of the dining hall but could not find the swimming pool. I did stumble across, what I think was the hospital where I spent 3 weeks with two broken wrists (another story)
  16. I built a trike two years ago that can be rowed. It is called my Village Cruiser. I plan to fit a pillion seat for my great grandkids to ride on. I really must learn how to post pictures. Also have a penny farthing (ordinary) C1880 that needs re building.
  17. I believe that there was another lost lake in Radford, At the end of Lake St. I remember being told that the large sunken garden running along The Grove was once a lake. And of course there are the wartime fire ponds - slab square and on the Forest where the car park is now.
  18. I had a very bad experience at Skills toyshop. 1946, mam and me lived on Peveril St., dad was still posted in India. It was my 8th birthday and mam sent me off to Skills to buy myself a Dinkey Toy, max price 2/- . Mam only had a pound note (the weeks keepings) and entrusted me to bring back the 18/- change. I looked in Skillies window and marvelled at the 'balancing man', a man with long arms with weights on the end. He stood on a pedestal and could not be rocked off. It was priced at 14 shillings and eleven pence. I bought it and took my mam the 5 shillings and a penny change back . She nearl
  19. #110 Thanks Jill;. Trevor and I may well fish together again!
  20. The top bit of Southy St leading up to Forest Rd is quite steep. I cycled up Breck Hill quite often but reckon Southy St is steeper near the top. I rode in a few bike races using the Melton Rd., Nether Broughton. Bit of a grind but going down was nice.
  21. LizzieM - It probably was Paul Kreagers shop. i know that he did well in business and lived in a large, walled house near Keyworth when we lived there. Jill Sparrow - It would be the same Trevor Davys. He was my fishing pal. Be nice to talk to him again. I am still a keen fisherman.
  22. As a young child C1944/6 I played in what I believe was the remains of Folly lake. It was a strip of water along the wall running along New Road (old map) There was a small odd shaped ruin in the middle of the scrubland that the Leen ran through. My Granddad told me that it used to be a boating lake. They must have dammed of the Leen to creat the lake.
  23. Trent Bridge brings back a lot of memories for me. Fishing for gudgeon from the steps, alongside the pleasure boat landing stage as a kid. Trips to Pleasure Park Colwick on the pleasure boat. Taking out a rowing boat when I was a bit older. On Sundays when I was fishing the rowing clubs were out training with their coach cycling along the embankment, shouting instructions. Us kids used to shout 'EEEEASY OAR' and laughed when some oarsmen stopped rowing. I think that justice was done 3 years ago when I tried to join Nottm Rowing Club as a senior - it turned out that I was to old to get insuranc
  24. 1967 i was on a thousand a year + car and expenses. However in 1953 I started at the Gun factory on 27/6 per week but that increased to 32/- p/w 6 months later.
  25. LizzieM .. I was a cycling pal of the late John Aslin. I rode a few road events and on the track with him before he went semi pro. He was mentioned in a book about the great Jaques Anqueil when he rode in England - "a local rider who gave me some trouble" as I recall.
