  1. Have they all been pinched? That area has a reputation for ATMs going missing, that last remark has no foundation to it, I was just assuming.

Must admit it is a bit rough about those parts, well it was when I last drove through, lucky to escape without my wheels going missing while waiting for traffic lights changing, come to thinking of it the amber light never lite maybe the bulb had disappeared too…..

We here in damp Sawley by the river Trent and Derwent have only just got an ATM replaced in our local rip off CO-Op, the Co-Op on Draycote road, a gang of thieves took a fancy to it and from what I had read several others up and down the country too.

The replacement only happened when a sign patron from residents was forwarded to whomever it was who sorts these things out.

The delay I reckon was caused by the fear of it being fork lifted out once again by the same people, the thieves I believe are now behind bars.

The cardboard cut out of the seven-foot copper in day glow jacket just inside of entrance never got touched thank god, fat lot of use he was…….

Bip out here enjoying what little freedom he has left.

  2. What surprises me the most Craig is punters keep on going back for more.

The food prices keep on going down but the beer prices keep going up obviously to counteract or to offset the price of a meal.

Not been in there lately in fact for several years but when I did last go in, the food was excellent.

If I was faced with a beer price of what you say it is I would forgo the drink and have the meal and if I was really pissed off by the price I would make my feeling known and walk out, after all there’s plenty of places to choose from these days…

Last night in Basford Hall I paid two squid a pint, that was for Worthington smooth, I know not the greatest of beers but better than what was on offer on the pump next door to it…Green King IPA….

Maybe they get a lot of passing trade from the bus stop just outside.

  3. There were no Christmas’s in our house; maybe that explains why I’m so sick and twisted.

Joking apart I remember very little of my Christmas’s apart from the pillowcase at bottom of bed filled to overflowing with nowt I really wanted apart from sugar pig at bottom.

There are several I do remember thou, one is when I got an electric train set, a blue and yellow Diesel with several carriages, the track was a loop so basically it didn’t go very far, that soon was discarded with all the other rubbish I got…

  4. Obviously so Pete and its fun too.

There’s a lot of work being done by the environmental agency right at this moment to safe guard my Bungalow from getting wet by a tidal wave caused by a riverbank collapse on the Derwent river.

The last time the Derwent burst its banks was last year, the whole of the farmer’s field about me were under water, I couldn’t even take Diezel out to his usual sniff and smell spot.

The Bungalow I’m in is built above the last know high tide, there’s at least a four foot gap between ground level and the floor boards, which makes for easy access if central heating pipes burst….

  5. The Prisoner ---- if you get the chance to watch the new 6 part Prisoner that has been made...DONT....its crap....supposed to be an explanation of what it was about....what rubbish.

Sorry but is the Prisoner Sci-Fi...it maybe fiction but i doubt it was Sci-Fi or did I miss the episode where the space ship landed and took off again, mind you i wouldn't blame it taking off again has anyone walked along the beach at Port Merion like I and Diezel have?

I enjoy Voyager and still do, am at moment catching the new series where at the end they get back to earth.

Farscape is another Sci-Fi series I enjoyed.

  6. Those last two places you recommend Red aren’t near Redhill or Arnold so I don’t think they will serve Rob 666 for a cheap hearty but satisfying meal out.

My recommendation of the Burntstump is looking the favourite at the present.

But if Rob 666 is ever over this end of the city I can recommend the White house on Tamworth road, it’s rather a posh looking place but don’t let the palatial exterior or interior put one off, their meals are excellent and they do have a special menu for certain days of the week …example two courses for ten squid, you would be surprise how many pensioners gather in its cloisters with there crumpled ten squid in sticky damp hands…….

The Harrington arms are more or less next-door but I wouldn’t recommend that place.

The head Honcho and I ventured there one damp evening only because he was feeling lonely for being left in the house on his own by his live in partner, he had the stew which he said was fantastic, I settled for the chicken which I found disappointing, not been there since, besides the beer is crap, green king you see.

  7. That’s another who agrees with the General saying of “you get what one pays for.

But in your case you must have got a duff pair, one most likely distained for the American market, were they both right footed? Only ask because the yanks drive on the right.

The “Hush Puppies” I have, even after six months of ware don’t show any amount or tire ware…. still good tread.

I believe once we here in sunny Nottingham had one of those shops down were the Lenton industrial estate is, the last time I passed that way it had gone, there is a Carpet shop there now I believe.

Maybe the whole shop from Nottingham got re-sited [moved] to where you bought those shoes from and took all their duff stock with them..just a thought.

I have seen old shoes used as planters, now that's an idea!

  8. Old adage beefy mate and one that still rings true even with Japanese goods, “one gets what one pays for’

Please don’t take what I say below as personal, you didn’t mention the price you paid for the shoes…..

For many years I’ve been buying cheep shoes, JJs is the place to go if one doesn’t want a shoes that will last your life time, if one leaves one assistance dog outside [that’s presuming one has one] and shows ones bus pass one gets a discount, the discount will vary from town to town, you being a young un I doubt very much if you would, but one can only ask.

The only time now I will buy a pair from them is for that particular purpose knowing full well they aren’t going to be in my wardrobe forever, basically wear until dirty then throw in recycle bin or one could pop them in a Charity bag for a deprived teenager in Kenya to wear.

The last pair of shoes I bought were from Armstrong mills here in damp Sawley, they are a pair of “Hush Puppies” a registered name I believe, they are brilliant and dead comfy too. I’ve have them for over six months and I ware them every time I go out which is often but not as often as I use too, not now I have found true love once more.

Sorry you have had a bad experience but I refer you to the adage above…

  9. Merely responding to the typical string of insults which arose from my bona fide and innocuous question.

Am I to remain silent under such vicious provocation?

    Cheers

    Robt P.

When I read Rob 237 reply to an innocent post of mine I was very tempted to reply stating my case but thought better of it only because if I did I would be accused of ageism, but if you would like to read my first response I can post it.

I will let the powers that be sort this one out; I shall let them decide which one of the two posts is more of an insult to whom or as Rob 237 puts it “ vicious provocation to a bona fide innocuous question or my innocuous helpful reply to his….

I’ll say no more because I have my blog to write and now Diezel to bathe.

    Q. What did the music teach need a ladder for?

    A. To reach the top notes………

    Q. What doesn’t get any wetter no matter how much rain falls on it?

    A. Water……

I know not great but that’s the best I can do under the stress that I am under at the moment, I will just have to up the dosage.

  11. Far from being a local expat I believe the Burntstump Inn, Arnold, do a pensioners special menu on Tuesday and a Wednesday.

On a Thursday evening they have a Pensioners curry night between eight and nine o-clock, I have been to the late evening one Thursday but had to leave Diezel tied up outside, apparently they have a strict rule regarding dogs, but a word of warning they don’t take kindly to Zimmer frames.

If one is visually impair one may ask for the brail menu.

There’s also a dedicated disabled section to their car park which I found very convenient even thou I wasn’t a blue badge holder at that particular time.

  12. I have taken in everything you have said but i still feel that going down Western Boulevard in the rush hour could be dodgy.

Some years ago i use to see a woman on a bike with what looked like a carriage for two children being towed behind, she too had flags everywhere but despite that I still thought that must be dangerous for her and the children, I know I wouldn't like to have put my two offspring in such danger, by the way it also looked very flimsy.

  13. You have mine too Joy.

My son was some time ago now involved in an incident whereby he had his roller skates taken from him at knifepoint by a known criminal of the area.

He was arrested and took to court and found guilty not only for my sons incident but for many others too.

My son got his skates back and luckily he wasn’t affected by the ordeal apart from a few tears at the time, I think the experience has made him a better person.

  14. Those recumbents look fun and at the same time dangerous in heavy traffic, are you ever tempted to take a short cut under articulated lorries?

Personally I didn’t mind cycling in traffic, as long as one feels confident on a bike and confident surrounded by traffic I could see no problems.

There are of course the odd car/van drivers who are idiots and go out of their way to force one into difficult situations but I put that down to them never ever riding a bike and experiencing the joys of the chase and the fumes.

What annoys me and I bet every car/van/lorry driver is those cyclists that don’t obey the highway code by going through red lights and using pedestrian light controlled crossings to cross the road and now I’ve heard the powers to be are changing the rules regarding cyclist riding on the pavement giving the cyclist charabanc to knock down the old and the young and come to that me, if I see one of those idiots speeding at me on the pavement my arm will be raised for a clothesline.

As I have said before I rode a bike for about fifteen years to and frow from work, I gave my bike away to the son of the woman I had that eight-month relationship with, the bike hadn’t been used for some years and her son needed another bike, I tidied it up to make it road worthy again gave it to him and before I knew it we split up, the next time I see him he was riding a new bike, not mine, asked him where was the bike I gave him and he ignored me and rode off….I don’t regret giving him the bike but what I do regret is getting involved with such a cold and calculating woman.

    Thanks for listening….

  16. They are big around these parts too with two show rooms plus workshops, one on Acton road and the other on Tamworth road…the showroom come workshop on Acton road is the main MOT centre, you can see owners on most days outside weather permitting sitting at the designated table and chairs waiting for their beloved motor bikes to have their annual health check or if weather isn’t congenial with sitting outside they can be seen eyeing up the over priced badge BMW goodies.

  17. Thanks for that Bip, it's good to get some support from someone like yourself who has been there and done that, is there any foods to keep away from apart from the obvious sausage and bacon?

    Rog

Avoid any food stuffs that are loaded with sugar...examaple Milk shakes from the golden arches.....any confectionary but one could try eating several large Mars bars just to kick start your metabolism, don’t make a habit of it thou…..keep off the beer, but if one does like a drink like myself switch to Cider, I did and it worked for me, even thou my late wife said that drinking cider made me argumentative and obnoxious, so what’s new there then?, I now drink when at the Rolls Royce leisure club Gaymers Pear cider its yummy, so far I’ve had no complaints about my manner from Tich.

Drink and to put on cereal and in hot drinks semi skimmed milk.

Cooked or raw porridge oats is a good slow release energy food so is bananas.

I use to make a wicked milk shake made from brown banana’s and powdered skimmed milk, a really good healthy drink after a heavy training session, you could put a table spoon full of raw oats in with said milk shake just to give it that extra body.

Pasta and boiled rice are another slow release energy food, potatoes are ok as long as one don’t have creamed….chips once a week as a treat is ok.

If one feels one can’t do without fried sausages and fried bacon grill them but again don’t have them regular make them a treat that also goes for fried eggs too.

Another of may wicked shakes was to use the whites of six eggs blended in a blender with a pot of low fat yoghurt and dried skimmed milk topped up with tap water.

Honey is good for when one feels low on energy just before a training session or bike ride it give one that kick start we all need sometimes.

Basically its just common sense really, if the food looks good it’s more likely it will do you no good.

    Hope that helps..

  18. One can eat not enough food to lose wait, ones body shuts down and goes into starvation mode thinking “if this is it I better hang onto what fat storage I have.

Having read many weight training book and nutrition books too I would suggest you upped your calorie intake to kick-start your metabolism.

Just a suggestion besides what do I know about nutrition and how best to grow muscle and lose body fat I only had twenty years of practical experience…

  19. While at skool I hated any exercise that involved running.

I would always come last on a cross-country run, fifty yards and I was knackered.

The PE teacher at the time must have been a sadist, he knew very well I would be coming in last but he still insisted on sending me out there with the rest of the boys.

I say sadist because I reckon he got some sort of a kick out of kicking my arse when I got back, slipper was the preferred punishment by him, I only wish I knew his name, wouldn’t mind paying him a visit.

As I have said before I loved playing tennis but never got the chance to play it at skool, one feels I wasn’t in the right class to be given that privilege.

Cricket was the order of the day and Rugby too.

At home I would roller skate in the close I lived in, bike too and trolly ride down the hills about Bilborough estate.

Cycling was my favourite way of keeping fit, I had a Raleigh bike, I used my mums that had a sprung seat before I had my own bike, I always wished for a fixed gear bike, I solved that by rapping string around the back gear cog.

To this day I still can’t run to save me life I even don’t like walking fast, I’m a plodder you see.

You put me on a bike and I will cycle all day, take me off it and say run I couldn’t.
