  6. If you watch the old black and white films, everyone seemed to smoke, made them looked sophisticated, nearly everyone had uneven teeth and untoned bodies.......
  7. #1 Clifton - I Can remember Arkwright Street in the late 50's as my Aunty Grace lived in a flat above Jesse Robinson's fish shop, 2nd past the corner of St Saviour's Street, opposite Kirkby Street......Had many a happy hour down there then, although I came from Hucknall, I used to love being down there....I was recently watching an old film 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' with all the old houses in Nottingham back then, made me feel very nostalgic about my youth.....

I hate the advert about- WHEN A STROKE STRIKES - gives me the creeps, I had a mild stroke back in May and do not want reminding of it by the TV, always turn it off, cannot bare to look at it - even the Cancer adverts make me cringe......Adverts are supposed to be amusing, like the ones we had years ago, you could sing along to them.......OMO add's brightness, CAMAY SOAP makes you beautiful as it was worth 9 guineas an ounce, your never alone with a STRAND CIGGIE and the toothpaste ads were funny as well, bring them back..........

Bunking off was another term.....we did it now and again at the Technical, Textile school in Nottingham, used to go around the shops during lunch break then sit all afternoon at the Capucci's cafe or the little cafe which was on Sneinton Market back in the late fifties, a lovelly, friendly couple owned it, we had fun with them and their toddler daughter was always with them..... They had a juke box playing all the latest records for free, wonder where they are now ?
  10. jumbo boiled egg and toast today with marmalade and toast afterwards, followed with a hot cup of tea......yummy - we never, ever go without breakfast, best meal of the day.........

A lot of it was bravado with he fellas, proving to their mates that they were macho and could bed girls, making them pregnant was the proof, just cowards really.........It happened to my mother's youngest sister, she thought it was love, he just wanted leg over..............Luckily she had a good family who stood by her............

It was written all over his face, the pevert..........saw him in Blackpool back in the 60's, I knew there was something about him, but back then it was considered macho to act like him........No one would have dared pointed the finger at him, he was too powerful and money talked, they had to wait until he was dead, it was fear of the reprisals - also a lot of people wanted to be on the bandwagon back then, including the groupie girls............... I had a male friend who has recently died aged 86, he came from Windsor ...... quite well off, was around then, attended the pop scenes and trend

I attended Textile School, Bath Street Nottingham from 1958/61 - worst years of my life - what a waste of time it was.....Just a few scruffy classrooms attached to the Victoria School , Brook Street with the weaving and Knitting machines - had lousy teachers who taught me nothing.........I remember the headmistress, Miss Norris - Mr Kerry, Mr Bamber, Mr Rippon, Mr Rogers, Mr Dearden........Miss Bostock, Miss Maud, Miss Wenn, Miss Winfield, Mrs Tillinghurst, Mrs Turner, (Mrs Jackson who left because of her pregnancy).........I went because I was clever at the Junior school, but did not pass my
  16. I had 2 friends who attended there 1958-61 ------ Elizabeth Copeland and Jennifer Wagg from Hucknall Notts.............
  17. I remember Hucknall Wakes, it came twice a year........Always enjoyed it, came onto the rec on Linby Road, just around the corner from where I lived, the wakes's aren't the same any more, just like the markets, everything has gone.....

I went to all those as I grew up in Hucknall.........Papplewick Lido was the best in my opinion, we spent many happy days there in the school holidays, hot days.......went to the Hucknall swimming baths when it rained, as we lived just across the road on Station Terrace, never did manage to learn to swim as a bitch of a girl called Valerie Tomlinson pushed me in the deep end when I was 9 years old, I nearly drowned, put me off learning to swim after that, just went to the Lido's for the sunbathing when I was older......
  19. I can remember these comics back in the 50's....... We always had the Dandy and Beano, (Tuesday) they were 2d each and the Topper (Friday) which was 3d.......delivered with the Daily Mirror which we had everyday from Allsebrooks at the bottom of Station Road/High Street, Hucknall every day plus Sunday Pictorial...........My dad always read them first....... My mum paid into the Christmas Club and we had Beano, Dandy and Topper books every Christmas along with the Selection Boxes........I can remember that we collected and saved them for years as my dad said that one day they might be valuable
  20. There was a Farrands on the High Street in Hucknall in the 50's - was taken over by Finefare later on...........Me mam always went to the CO-OP.......

I watched the service on TV this morning with a lump in my throat., always wear my poppy with pride......The Queen and Phil were there as always paying their respects, along with their family which is touching.........Liz is almost 90 and Phil is 94 years, yet they get ready and attend, they have never missed a year yet. a credit to us all........... I had family who fought in the war, never lost anyone, but they were very traumatised for the rest of their lives........was all done for us, may we always remember the ones who didn't return.........RIP
