  1. I'd fully agree, but it this case it appears it was a ' steak pie '.
  2. I read it that the Muslim clerics are saying, it's not a sin to eat pie containing ale if you're unaware of it. This in response to the Muslim lady raising the issue. Seems sense is prevailing. Although then presumably Asda's pies without ale aren't Halal? The other issue is a wider one I suppose - that of clear listing of ingredients in the stuff we eat. Whether it be for religious reasons or intolerance of ingredients that can make people ill.

Lizzie was probably quoting the title of this thread. The term endurance can be used in different ways. My use of of it in this case is 'the capacity to last'. I think it's a fitting term.
  4. Looks like they're in the process of constructing the steps. Many happy days down at Trent Pool when I was at school too.
  5. Some really great pictures there. I never knew there was a waterworks in that place. I guess the original picture was very early then, probably not too long after the new bridge was built in the 1870's. Thanks Trevor S and poohbear.
  6. That's a very interesting picture, anyone any idea of the date, it must be a hundred years old? I'm also curious as to the chimney to the right of the old Town Arms pub.
  7. Just a quick google says 'Torkard' was the name of the local landowners. It did drop the Torkard bit in 1915.
  8. Yes it is. It was called Hucknall Torkard until about a century ago, I believe
  9. Maintaining the Champagne lifestyle and keeping it in the family even more. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/11278246/Champagne-wars-grip-Parliament-as-peers-slam-Commons-vintage.html
  10. Then my wife thinks loads of things are unlucky. It must be living with me!
  11. Smashing photo. We have robins in our garden too, which I always enjoy seeing. But much to my wife's dismay. She say's they are supposed to be unlucky?
  12. The last two pictures are of the later Collygate Infants down the end of Mundella Rd. The church hall ( Santa fa ) stood on the weed patch in the first picture. I lived just round the corner.
  13. A fascinating subject and all to do with Einsteins relativity theories and the space-time continuum. As I learned about in Back to the Future.
  14. We always had it when I was a kid, and it was always mixed with hot milk. Very nice too. Funnily enough, we still have it in our house, but only because my wife uses it when she makes tiramisu. I'll have to try it again to drink.
  15. Well, I wish her luck with that one. ' Dukki ' eh? And Is it just me but every time I go on that Nottingham Post site I get bombarded with adverts I can't stop. Get's right on me wick.
  16. Just sitting here watching a group of teens mooching by outside, heads down punching away at their phones or whatever. Sets me reminiscing of a typical Saturday morning when I was their age late '60's. After a week of school, a bit of a lie-in listening to Ed Stewpot on the trannie. Then up and at 'em and into town on the number 43 bus. Meet a couple of mates in the Wimpey for a hamburger and coke. Then into the record shop listening booths to catch up with the latest chart releases, Pearsons basement the destination of choice. Next a quick shufty down Hockley to check out the latest at
  17. Cliff Ton #15 I agree the ambience of the centre was very good from a shopper perspective, and it was brighter as you say, because it had daylight from the ceiling windows along its length. The issue was simply that the shop tenants weren't making any money and rents were high. I speak though from a retailers' point of view, working in the centre for the first three years of it's opening and then more years than I care to remember in the city centre. From the off, many stores weren't hitting anything like the expected footfalls. Two of the biggest, the Co-op and the Sainsburys struggled into
  18. Marbles were huge entertainment for little money, weren't they? Chokker was our favourite game. Me and my mates were avid collectors as well, always on the lookout for something interesting. We didn't like to play with our favourites much because usually we played keepsies. We used to use ball bearings a lot too. There was always a good supply from scrap area at the back of the bus sheds on Turney St. The fitters never seemed to bother about us kids crawling about in the huge scrap pens looking for wheel bearing races. No Health and Security in them days! We'd then spend absolutely bloody a
  19. When I was in the world of work I habitually awoke about 2.00 am, dwelling on all the problems ( or ' opportunities ' as we were encouraged to call them ) and priorities I would be dealing with later that day. Nowadays upon retirement, I still get some restless nights, but thankfully far fewer. Of course, lifes problems always seem a hundred times worse in the small hours.
  20. I do remember Miss Slack around the school, as a no-nonsence type, but not my teacher. My other teachers were Miss Carty and possibly a Mrs Hedley?, both quite nice ladies. I also seem to recall a Mr Griffin. For each year then, I guess there must have been two classes? This had completely slipped my mind. Although I don't remember as many as eight class-rooms around the hall. The head teacher was of course Mr Pearson. He strapped me once for nothing but it didn't hurt at all.
  21. Yes that's it, I remembered it as a bit grand on the front. I'd be about five so a good fifteen years before that picture. Thanks Tony and poohbear
  22. My grannie lived in Clyde St, off Wilford Rd, where I used to visit when I was quite small. There was a large building along one side of the street, opposite side to the Loco pub. I had an idea it was a cinema but haven't seen mention of it anywhere. The building is marked on the map but no details. Can anyone enlighten?
  23. At the Juniors I had Mr Adlam as my teacher twice, in my second and then fourth year 1965. He was a very nice bloke. During that last year I believe he was either involved in some accident or possibly even attacked, and sustained serious head injuries. I'm sure he was still off school when I left. Anyone know what happened to him?

You're right of course. I got my leg pulled by my mates, but within twelve months two of them had also tied the knot.
  25. Broad Marsh has always been the poor relation to Victoria Centre, ever since it opened. In recent years its become nothing short of a dump. They can't even give units away to the charitables any more.
