  1. I was a Girl Guide in Mapperley then Woodthorpe. We sang all those songs, also….. never let your braces dangle donkey riding A woman in a churchyard stood kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
  2. @LizzieM sorry to read about your husband’s problems. It must be very difficult for him (and you!). I hope a reason for the problem will soon be found x
  3. @philmayfield do you serve teas when you take part in the Open Gardens scheme. Summer meet up at Phil’s anyone?
  4. I totally agree Phil. If whips were banned altogether then it would be fair for all involved. I know there are rules about the use of the whip but that’s a bit like saying you can only beat your dog/cat/wife? a certain number of times each week!!!
  5. @BrewAt least they think your bro is well enough to be discharged. Have they said whether it was a clot or a bleed which caused his stroke? I really wish him well and hope he’ll continue to improve at home
  6. What about Dick Barton and his friend Dizzy Dial? My older brother used to list to listen to that, I listened but had no idea what it was about. I remember the music though.
  7. @MelissaJKelly sorry you have been made redundant - have you any thoughts on what you’d like to do? It’s a bit of a cliche but’when one door closes, another one opens’. This has certainly been the case several times in my life. (Although it can feel a bit bleak when you’re between doors !). x
  8. Just to play devil’s advocate…… Aren't all languages evolving? For example, we don’t still speak or write in the same manner that Shakespeare or (even worse) Chaucer used. Working with my two youngest grandchildren on French homework, they learn a much more relaxed, colloquial way of speaking than when I was at school. I think that as long as people can communicate effectively, does it really matter? There are more important things to worry about than this . It does get me though when commentators talk about the AMOUNT of people rather than the NUMBER of people! Please re
  9. @Brew Hope your brother gets proper treatment soon or is he just on observation? What signs and symptoms did he have when he was admitted? Please give him my best wishes and tell him he’s fortunate to have a brother like you to look out for him
  10. @mary1947 hope you’re having a good day x
  11. I remember when I was nearly 4 and walking down Woodthorpe Drive with my mum and someone else. There were huge banks of snow on the edge of the pavement which I think must have been cleared manually. I climbed up the banks and walked along the top. I suppose they must have been about 4 feet tall but they were huge to me! I remember getting chilblains on my toes and mum putting ‘Winter green?’ on them. It was like a green stick of something which she warmed in front of the fire and then daubed it on my toes.
  12. @plantfitHope you and Mrs Plantfit have a great Silver Wedding celebration tomorrow x
  13. @MRS B I love to read of those random acts of kindness. It’s good for the giver and the recipient. It makes the world feel like a much better place…
  14. I was standing at a bus stop yesterday - all the seats were occupied - and a twenty-something woman stood up and asked if I’d like to sit down. i was a bit taken aback but I accepted with a smile and thanked her. However, I suddenly felt old because that’s never happened to me before. I still feel it should be me who gives up my seat for a little old lady!
  15. @IAN FINN what a great Christmas present! Best wishes to you and Jill. I just love the word ‘benign’ x
  16. @letsavagoo so sorry to read that your appt has been postponed. It would have been great to have had the steroid injection before Christmas so you could have enjoyed the time without pain…. It’s such a shame you’ll have to continue with the Tramadol to keep you pain free. My thoughts are with you x
  17. Thanks for that - we are a bit useless with ticket machines!
  18. @notty ash- I didn’t know that! Thanks for the information. Is it easy to buy a reduced fare ticket from the machine?
  19. Nor our Cambs bus passes….. I was only thinking of the people on here who have Notts bus passes when I made my previous part about using the tram. When we are visiting Nottingham we often use the buses and our passes are accepted on them. Compared with the hourly bus service in our village, it is great not having to wait very long for one to arrive. (And I love the different colours)
  20. Perhaps they forget the Name of the site or forget their username? Or even think the members on here are too cliquey or too ‘friendly’ and they decide they don’t want to be drawn in to conversations with people they don’t know? Sorry CT just seen your post
  21. Playing devils advocate here… what’s wrong with parking at a tram terminus instead of driving into the centre - free if you have your bus pass.
  22. @Oztalgian That sounds dreadful - so pleased you are now (slowly) on the mend x
  23. @Beekay it’s made of rigid plastic BUT it’s not single use plastic - it’s reusable and will last for years and years.
