  1. We still can get bacon sliced in our village butcher’s (but it then gets put into a plastic bag so not that much better than in a supermarket! I do have a long storage container specially for bacon rashers so I suppose I could take that to the shop to bypass the plastic bag
  2. @PeverilPeril you speak of a ‘pang of shame’ when thinking of your involvement with single use plastics. I expect we all feel shame or guilt about some things we’ve done in our lives, whether unconsciously (as in your case) or deliberately….. Some things we can put right, perhaps by apologising to someone and healing a relationship, but sadly, other things can’t be put right, however much we wish they could be. All we can do then is to ‘turn over the page’ and try not to make the same mistakes in the future chapters of our life. You and others on here are certainly thinking about
  3. There are many charities who would really appreciate the £10 Christmas bonus if anyone reading this doesn’t really need it!
  4. @Jill Sparrow Hope your birthday has been (and still is) all you could have hoped for x
  5. At CLW, I had 2 Panoramic photos taken, also one class photo (3rd year) and one netball team photo.
  6. @Jill Sparrow During my time at Arno Vale, there were definitely no group photos taken at all - only individual ones. Perhaps because it was not that long after the war? Not much money around?
  7. There was a Miss/Mrs Smith in the top infants class who let the top three children in the class do weaving on a small loom…… and no, it wasn’t the equivalent of sitting at the back doing raffia I’ve still got the scarf I made. I don’t think it would be allowed these days to show such favour to certain children and not to others.
  8. @PeverilPeril keep up the good work - it’s very important
  9. It probably wouldn’t work because, unlike some other schools, we didn’t have group photos to remind us of our classmates!
  10. @Stuart.C Maybe the portable record player that belonged to my friend was a Phillips…. all I know is that it definitely wasn’t plugged in anywhere as we put it on the grass in the middle of the park! This was 1959 - 1960
  11. @LizzieM The Dansette belonged to my friend Hilary and no, it wasn’t plugged in anywhere! It must have been battery operated? I never took much notice of it - as long as I could listen to the music that was all I was interested in. It might have even been a different brand of record player?
  12. Once again, I love this song …. Always remember it playing loudly on the Waltzers at Goosefair. Also I remember playing this record on a Dansette on Woodthorpe Park, where a big group of us met on summer evenings to jive and generally act like teenagers with not a care in the world and our whole lives stretching out in front of us….. How is it that I can remember this so clearly even after 60-odd years….. I i can even feel the buzz of excitement I felt as I walked down to meet them all
  13. Happy 80th BK. Hope you’ll enjoy this milestone in your life and all the years afterwards as well. X
  14. Sorry to read about your fall @nonnaB and the Covid symptoms. As others have said, just rest until you feel better. Xx
  15. @DJ360 Christmas is always on25 December but Easter is a moveable feast
  16. It’s expensive - I hope it works well!
  17. @Jill Sparrow I think the reason for there being mostly tins and packets is probably because it all goes to the local Foodbank . At least that’s the case round here. We do include some fresh produce to decorate the church though. People can then buy any fresh produce on the display and the money goes to Foodbank funds
  18. I was taken to see our dead neighbour in his own bedroom surrounded by candles. That would be around 1952/53. Then when I was 23 I went with my parents to see my auntie in her coffin in her front room. That was in 1966 . When my dad died in 1984, - he was living with us - it was very late evening so my mum and I decided to leave him in the bedroom until the morning before we called the undertakers. I laid him out and he looked very peaceful. The doctor who confirmed the death was a bit surprised we didn’t want to have dad taken away immediately….
  19. @philmayfield you are correct about our having no class photos during our time at Arno Vale. I remember there being 3 chairs next to each other in the infant playground and 3 of us had our photos taken at the same time. I thought I would get a photo of all of us but we only got our own photo. I wish we’d had a class photo in the top class (Mr Turner) so I could be reminded of everyone I was at school with (including you !!)
  20. Hope your follow up visit goes well Col and that any infection will soon be dealt with x
  21. Well said, Col. Do you use a cuddly blanket? I do, but it encourages the cats to snuggle up on my knee as well! Because they are old (16) I don’t like to disturb them so I have to sit for hours watching TV or scrolling. !!!
  22. He was our coal man, I think…
  23. @Brew Are you on tablets, patches or a spray? Sorry you fell- is your nose badly bruised? It sounds like the A&E was very efficient in dealing with you quickly. Please take care x
  24. Our Last years WF payment was the beginning of December. I believe ours will be arriving in November. Perhaps different areas of the country will get theirs at different times?
