  1. Cooking a special dinner tonight: venison and chestnut pie. Used the Mary Berry recipe for the filling and substituted potato pastry for the crust as this is less fatty than puff pastry. The potato pastry recipe is in the Hairy Dieters cookbook. They loved it!
  2. It is so sad when these places are not respected. My Mum was cremated and her ashes buried in the garden of remembrance at the Church in West Yorkshire where she was baptised and married. Her name is in the book of remembrance. It is an active Church and well cared for. Her friend told us that she looked over the wall and knew my Mum was safe there.
  3. They have big maps of the graves at the General Cemetery in the Nottingham Archives. Very nice helpful staff there. Also they have the burial records. All access is free but it is a good idea to book. There are also burial records there for the Rock Cemetery. In 1988 I wanted to find my grandmother's grave. She was buried at the General Cemetery in 1917 when my dad was a very young child. So sad. I had the grave certificate with the number and details on. A council employee met me and showed me a paper map and found the grave number. We walked down to where the grave was. There was no g
  4. Thanks for the replies. From what you are saying I am glad that he did not book at the Shipley Boat Inn and we went to the Cricketers! We did not miss anything.
  5. Welcome Bilborough Girl. Bilborough was a great place to grow up in!
  6. I have been watching the Magic Numbers series presented by Prof Hannah Fry on BBC4. It was excellent. In lay person's terms Hannah made numbers and the development of maths so interesting. Programme 3 was last night and Hannah related quantum physics to biology and particularly photosynthesis. Using entanglement theory from quantum physics she explained how absorption of light energy from photons by chlorophyll allows the energy to be shared by all the molecules. Particles are synchronised. The link for the detail of the programme is: www.open.edu/openlearn/tv-radio-events/tv/magic-
  7. Does anyone remember the Shipley Boat Inn? A Berni Inn. We were supposed to have dinner there one evening. The person who planned this did not book! It was packed so we had to go back into Nottingham and the Cricketers was good. Any comments about the Shipley Boat Inn? Just wondering what we missed all those years ago. These days I love Italian food.
  8. Tonight's episode of Dr Who was brilliant. Nice bits of humour and good acting. The historical story line was very thought provoking. People should not have been treated like that. Thank goodness for equality legislation.
  9. Yes! I had a pair of beetles tights, they were black. Thanks LizzieM. I had forgotten about them!
  10. Thanks jonab. I remember the Army Game now. My grandfather used to like it! Memories!
  11. 30 denier stockings with seams up the back! I had forgotten all about them. Best not remembered. I recall one girl being in trouble for wearing ones with a diamond pattern on. They were good!
  12. Yes the first Dr Who was William Hartnell. I do not remember the Army Game.
  13. I watched the very first series of Dr Who with my dad. We loved it. The new series is a big improvement on the last two. It is refreshing to have a new female Dr Who with a Yorkshire accent.
  14. I have been busy with work and not looking at Nottstalgia for quite a few days. The new layout and colour scheme of the site is great. Big thanks to the person(s) who set this up. Love it!
  15. Amazing photos. Thanks. The last time i drove around Canning Circus was in 1988 when I visited General Cemetery. What is the round building under construction on the left? When the E1 bus came up Ilkeston Road and turned to the left around Canning Circus there was a dress shop just before it got to the cemetery buildings. They always had a lovely dress on display in an upstairs widow. Does anyone remember the shop?
  16. Great chips from the chip shop on Cockington Road. I remember them well.
  17. When my Grandfather married my Grandmother and they moved from East Yorkshire to Nottingham his address was Russell Street. This was where they lived before they moved to live in Sneinton. I have found Russell Street on the map. My mother's cousin said that this was a street full of lodging houses in the early 1900 s . I am sure that Nottstalgians will know lots about Russell Street.
  18. I have many happy memories of visiting the castle. As a child I went with my parents and we had a grand day out. Dad and I went down Mortimer's hole before the days of health and safety legislation. Part of the tour involved us going on our hands and knees through a tunnel. It was wonderful and so exciting. I loved looking at the old coaches and the tea shop was nice. When our son was primary school age I wanted to give him a similar experience. We caught a train to Nottingham. It was packed with cricket supporters and when I offered a lady a seat asking my son to sit on my lap people thought
  19. Back in the 1960 s a couple by the name of Hamilton ran a B and B at Pier House on Harbour Road Brora. My parents found this absolute gem of a place to stay on holiday. A lovely couple and lots of nice memories. Loved Brora. Thanks for the beautiful photos.
  20. The register is so useful for finding where people lived, and for giving married names for females that were added later. This register was used for NHS records up to the 1990 s. I worked through the register for the village where my husband was born to get the whole population. My husband and brother in law found this very interesting to see families they remembered and where they were in 1939 (before their time!).
  21. This reminds me of a GCSE Human Biology exam back in the 1980s. The syllabus included learning about first aid. For the exam candidates had to know that if someone got something stuck in their ear the thing to do was to take them to the doctor's surgery or A and E. There was a question about this in the exam. When the examiner's report was published after the results came out the comment about this was: In the question about removing a foreign body from the ear canal, too many candidates answered "blow through from the other side". Something about not listening!
  22. This memory amuses us. The song is Paul Simon: Duncan. The words: Couple in the next room bound to win a prize ........ We had a cabin on the overnight ferry from Shetland. Our son was very young at the time and sound asleep in the bed next to the wall. The couple in the next room ..........The noise was loud! I was ready for the questions if he woke up. My story would have been "I think someone is feeling unwell. Don't worry about it". He did not wake up. Years later I told him the story and now we all have a laugh when we hear Duncan! Also now when I hear Pentecost mentioned I think of
  23. At lunch time today I sat with my coffee and watched Bargain Hunt. In between the buying and the auction they visited The Trip to Jerusalem pub in Nottingham and interviewed the landlord. It was interesting, all about how the caves under there were once used for prisoners!
  24. Thanks for all the replies about Home and Colonial stores. I could not remember them in Nottingham. These pieces of social history are so interesting.
  25. Home and Colonial stores. A chain of stores owned by Julius Drewe. My husband remembers one of their shops. We visited Castle Drogo in Devon last week. Julius Drewe had this built at huge cost. The roof leaks and the National Trust is fixing it. Very interesting going up the scaffolding tower and having the repair process explained. Amazing architecture and well worth the visit. Nice tea shop! To get back onto topic, I do not remember a Home and Colonial in Nottingham. Was there one?
