  1. Hi Margie. I was working at Ratty power stn in the 70s, in a remote pumphouse at 3 in the morning, I had to go in there to make running checks. There was a big pump under repair and I saw a figure in white overalls looking at the job thirty feet from me, I did what I had to do and went over to see what he was doing but no one there, the pump house is in a large space so anyone within 100 yards would be visible but no one in the area. The control room op told me there was no reason for any one else to be in there and the repair was in the hands of the day men. So I went there before dark an
  2. YES! Potted meat. Good stuff now from Birds, dont miss your chance if in there, smear it on their white tin loaf on top of butter and then sleep it off. YUMMY. and about Serry, its common in the Erewash valley but used emphatically by Ilkestonians and of that area, probably follows the coal trail. Doesnt matter what the root is, just a good word like Sithee. Ayup serry owstha wippet?
  3. Another landmark gone. Brilliant actor, Spock was a wonderful special creation of Leonard's, a loveable half human,? takes some doing. I liked him-- both
  4. Check the itinary bruv, cheap means changing in Piraeus both ways! I really did like the old route from Boulogne up the Somme to Paris, never had to march it though. Enjoy your trip.
  5. What was so wrong with that area that the High Ups thought it needed changing? How we need to beware of the buggers who say they know better!
  6. MargyH your experience as a child rings a bell. The most convincing ghost story I ever heard involved a child living in Inham Nook estate and what they saw when trying to sleep, is Inham a place you know? I do believe I saw an entity once that was not a living person but looked just like one, briefly. Tried hard to discover who could have been in that spot (where I was working at night) but I was the only person there. Never went there in the dark again even though my job meant I should. but it is said although, places aren't haunted, people are.
  7. In a pencil factory spraying half a pencil, remember those crayons one colour one end, another colour the other end? well I coloured the other end by spraying on paint. The factory went long ago just like all the other hopeless British industries went, last pencil I bought was last year from Germany, cost £5 and handles like a Swiss fountain pen! Sorry for miserable input, I do appreciate you happy people. Love, The Tramp. PS I did have about 500 other jobs and a lot were good fun!
  8. Greetings Archiboy, I don't know dates but the paddling pool has the hallmarks of the rest of the park so was probably built at the same time, it's fed from the Tottle Brook as is the lake and the powers that be finally got scared of the health risks although children spending an afternoon in it were probably immune to everything afterwards! Is your project part of the Lottery spend?
  9. Briliant! sharp doesn't matter here, that last one with the yellow machine speaks volumes.
  10. Gee Hi Limey, I found a romantic little history of Tobys in a Civic Soc. book, a plumber bloke called Hartley had a bathware shop top of Friar lane, married a girl called Florence who'd been a manager in a posh china shop, to please her he spent big with an architect and built her a shop to sell nice things (and make money) she called it Tobys, that being his nickname as a lad. They both did well didn't they? Even more romance (for the ladies) the shop was built on the site of Dorothy Vernons cottage as was before she eloped with Lord John Manners. --- and another vague element, Hartley was
  11. Greetings Notties, seen this site many times and finally succombed. Never lived in Nottingham (and never paid rates) Im from the bus stop on the way to Derby. But see myself as a Nottingham person, is that enough to get me in? Retired now, done lots of jobs, now just have fun wasting time. You do seem a happy lot.
  12. Greetings Trevor. The dust on demo day jammed the camera shutter! Took scores of pics, the website is nottinghamoffcentrereview -- one word, Google usually finds it. Go to Pie Powder - then Still at work in Foundry Lane - then down to - Somethings changed in Foundry Lane. I resisted joining Nottstalgia for months, fell for it in the end, sound like nice people, a few anoraks though. Bless them.
  13. Newcomer here, I did like that viaduct, and I watched all day as the Cornish building came down, I reckon someone took a picture over my shoulder, if anyone wants to see a slideshow of the day I can recommend a website.
