  1. #16 BilboroughShirley I use FTM and Ancestry and familysearch pretty much like yourself, it is time consuming. It is now 12.56 a.m. yet when I last looked 5 minutes ago it was 12.05. I have published my tree on Ancestry but I know many people are reluctant to do this. No details of living persons are published so I can't see the problem but maybe I'm being naive. I am willing to be corrected. If I see any transcription errors I normally correct them because it's bloody annoying when relatives just disappear from the records . #11 NonnaB From what you've done so far I'm sure you will soon
  2. #15 Pianoman No, sorry no connection with my mob. Althorpe Grove is just off Vernon Avenue at the side of Vernon Park Basford. A coincidence my mother lived there as a child 1918.
  3. Hi Pianoman #10 Here's what I posted back in May. I will keep looking though. Posted 23 May 2015 - 12:24 AM Hi Pianoman #27 Don't know how much of this you have but this is what I've found. WW1 records show Charles Prince enlisted 13 April 1918 in Nottingham age 48 years and 2 months - next of kin was Florence Rose Prince (nee Laykin) married 1916, living at 49 Althorpe Grove, Vernon Road.- Charles Stanley Prince born 3 August 1917. Charles Prince died 1918 and letter showing all personal possessions were sent early 1919 to Florence Rose Harvey post diverted from Althorpe Grove to 10
  4. I have 1163 people on my tree nearly all found by using FTM and Ancestry. A few months ago I had my DNA tested to find other family members, and to assist a relative who wanted confirmation of her grandfather's parents. So far 3 second cousins, and hundreds of possibles which I will leave alone at this stage. Apparently I am 22% Scandinavian 34% West European and 44% British and speak Nottinghamese. I have found connections with a number of famous people past and present and a few skeletons as well. With modern media resources it is amazing that I can find information about people my paren
  5. I use Family Tree Maker (1 off purchase around £20-£40) side by side with Ancestry.co.uk. Annual renewal equal to less than a pint a week I find it easy to use and changes can be made to FTM or Ancestry and Synched through FTM. This also updates all copies including those on iPad, iPhone..which I use as notebooks if I'm out and about. At my desk I also run a separate screen with the excellent Familysearch.org.
  6. Phil Collins no longer retired comeback at 64. If he's hard up he could have come to me for a sub as we are practically family. According to Ancestry.co.uk --- my great aunt's husband's sister married his great great granddad. Is that close enough in case I need a sub off of him?
  7. Fly, I liked she Mary used to look after me as well. Just remembered the name of the other girl Helen.
  8. FLY2 Yep, Linda was her name, thanks! My dad left early to mid 60s we did Whippy's repairs before and Tonibel repairs after that.
  9. FLY2 #86 I used to help my dad maintain the fleet after school and at weekends, early 60s. Sunday lunch at the Balloon with the Flemings, and a few drivers, they lived on Renfrew Drive Wollaton. Had 2 nice looking daughters, I blonde a good looking female version of Don and the other dark haired a bit like Mary. As they had just arrived in Nottingham I had the pleasure of escorting the blonde ( I wish I could remember her name) around Nottingham for a while.
  10. Fly2 I agree, Longmead Drive, Edwards Lane Estate, ?????? , that's where I'm not sure I've seen articles that say Arnold, Daybrook and Sherwood. Were you at Softees when it was managed by Don Fleming and his wife Mary?
  11. OK DJ360 #73 and Benjamin1945 #78 I concede. It's not Bestwood I agree, but It wouldn't have fitted this topic if I'd have said Arnold or Daybrook or Sherwood. I didn't really know where I was at that stage of my life, bear in mind that for the 1st 9 months I was hidden away and the remaining month of my time at Longmead my eyesight would have been pretty poor. #70 Lol
  12. I was born in Longmead Drive,Bestwood in 1945. I've been looking for some old pics of me and this is the earliest one that I could find. Probably taken around January 45.
  13. Who do other countries consider to be Nottingham's heroes? During WW2 my dad escaped from an Italian prisoner of war camp and over a period of 3 months made his way from north of Rome to a small mountain village called Spigno a few miles from Monte Cassino. I got my son to ask his granddad about his time during the war (he never did discuss it with me) this gave me the name of the family which looked after him and hid him from the German soldiers. Some other details were mentioned. Back in 2003 I was in Italy and decided to check on this village in the vain hope of finding the family, so, ar
  14. Catfan ≠19 tomlinson Just to complete your memories. (nightmares) I remember sitting in a chair and a metal instrument similar to a miniature car jack being inserted in my mouth, then a rubber mask being placed over it and I was asked to count to 10. Got to about 6 and then zzzzzz. Don't forget the annual inspection was held there as well, we all had to form a line in front of that window, present our tackle and cough. Image and additional comments in red from a Nottstalgia member initials CP but not sure what name he uses on here.
  15. Don't forget FLY if it was an emergency it would be your duty, however, if you are so particular I'm sure some heavy duty brown paper bags could be sourced. Additional volunteer/advisors may be necessary.
  16. Bubblewrap, If it was absolutely necessary to ensure the furtherance of the human race, I would consider it my duty to have all the tools available for maximum productivity.
  17. In an emergency just in case the responsibility for the procreation of mankind should fall on my shoulders I would take a bagful of blue pills and a bike.
  18. Chulla perhaps knew it as Dorothy's when it belonged to my grandma.
  19. Not a fan of the 1970s looking perspex and formica makeover of the centre but Intu can't be blamed for the condition of the steps. According to an Evening Post article in April the building and steps at that end of the bridge belong to a Liverpool property management company. Demolish the bridge it's an eyesore anyway.
  20. No need to show deference now KatyJay, you never bothered when you and my then future wife 'wok'd at Raleh.' Even though our caste system expects utmost respect I am quite sure you would find that I am still nearly normal. I was a Prince back then and still a Prince which trumps a mere Viscount. You might have known my cousin, her mum owned the sweet shop McCarthy's in the Commodore block opposite Aspley Library.
  21. One of my cousins married the 10th Viscount Chetwynd whose grandfather (8th Viscount) designed, built and was MD at Chilwell. He's the man standing next to King George V in one of the earlier pics. Does that give me a connection? Well sort of.
  22. I applied for an apprenticeship position on motor vehicles about 1961, as a 16 year old I had to face an interview panel of 4/6 people, some uniformed which I found quite daunting. Anyway, after enquiring if I would get experience in artillery I was refused the position as apparently I wasn't of the right 'calibre'
  23. Thanks for all the good wishes. Mess ≠25 Love it spent an hour looking at other clips. hippo girl ≠26 I have 3000 + tracks starting with Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran etc. not a lot of new stuff except Paloma Faith, Paolo Nutini . Gave the 80s,90s and 00s a total miss though. Orphan Annie ≠32 I know what you mean, I can get even the worst D.I.Y. job done with a smile as long as I've got my music on loud. Barbs has to be out though as some of our tastes differ, considerate person that I am I've created for her a playlist of all her favourites. "Dave's Gone For a Walk."
  24. Just spent a really enjoyable week celebrating my 70th, I've had so many Apple products its a wonder I don't have 'bellyache.' I think the kids have been spending their inheritance before I've let go of it. All this technology keeps me feeling young and in touch, the grandkids can talk to me and my eyes don't glaze over. Today I woke feeling great with all my music playing on my new speakers. THEN the post arrived, only two items today (1) A letter from Saga offering travel insurance to people with pre-existing medical conditions and a flyer from a local funeral director. Have they, been tr
