This is probably a bit off kilter but did Bulwell ever have a "Wakes"? I can remember Basford wakes on the field near Basford crossing, with entry on Lincoln Street I think. It also spilt over to the Shoulder of Mutton, Radford rd/Western blvd. (Not sure if they were at the same time).

I just wondered if Bulwell had a fair at sometimes.

Beekay  There was definitely a fair held around the market/Bulwell bogs area, I'm not absolutely clear but I would think 1958/59 ish. Walking back to Broxtowe, just beyond the bogs I seem to remember an air raid shelter which was well used when the fair was around.

  2. Beekay, Sorry got the wrong opposite, I was thinking across from the pub frontage on Ilkeston Road. Glover's Oils was in a dilapidated old building, the owner's son was Jeremy Glover a well known national hunt jockey. The chippy was very good a regular haunt for us after a night out in Ilkeston, Mansfield or sometimes The Festival.

  3. Phil, As the head of the British Army's Logistics Brigade I doubt he has limited experience in delivering goods speedily and accurately anywhere in the world. Anyway I've had a word and he's going to divert vaccines from Gloucester and Northants to Notts Health and Care and by Thursday you'll be fine.

  4. Is this one of the 'bleedin' idiots' Phil? Following comment from the media.

Brigadier Phil Prosser, Commander of Military Support to the Vaccine Delivery Programme, said his team would use 'our extensive operational and logistic experience' to deliver vital supplies across the UK.

The commander of the British Army's 101 Logistic Brigade will lead soldiers distributing the drugs across the country in a bid to get the lockdown eased as soon as possible.

  5. My dentist sent me a link to Swiftqueue today for the over 75s which showed me a number of Notts Vaccination sites. All but the Forest Recreation Ground revealed that no times were available but there was one available at 08.30 on Sunday at the Forest site. I went through the process of registering, onto appointments and received an activation number. I entered the number which then gave me a new choice of Tuesday, chose a time that suited and pressed confirm. A pop up writ large in red appeared saying over 80s. Swiftqueue certainly chose an apt name. The Forest site is now over 80s.

  6. Made a couple of New Year's resolutions

I will not be kneeling for anyone at any time, ‘cept’ perhaps if someone suggested a gentle tap on my left shoulder with a Knighting Sword.

I will not be eating a diet based on plants and concocted in a lab by some chemical trickery.

I am considering getting an Apple as I have got increasingly fed up with the MS and Google domination and continued attempts to get more money out of me.

    radfordred would you recommend?

    Any tips?

Add Parallels Desktop app, about £30, to a Mac which then enables you to run Windows side by side.

  8. Thanks for the link of the bus routes Cliff Ton it helped unlock a few memories for me and confirms in my mind where the 18 terminus was. I was born in my aunts' house on Longmead Drive 75 years ago this week. When I was about 10 I used to catch the 18 bus from Trinity Square to Longmead and can remember clearly now sitting on the top deck and looking in the churchyard. During the journey there was a water works/pumping station somewhere near the junction of Hucknall Road and Haydn Road. The route then carried on to Edwards Lane and turned off into Alderton Road, at the crossroad with Longmead Drive it turned right and the terminus was on the right a couple of hundred yards up opposite a block of two shops one a grocer and the other a greengrocer. Another memory was sitting close to a heater on the bus, it was a large chrome circular unit bolted to the bulkhead, fantastic as I lived in a world where my dad's cars didn't have heaters.

  10. RR, Since the restart I've watched all the Forest matches on my TV through iFollow Forest app. A code was issued to Forest season card holders in lieu of a refund, allowing access to all remaining matches this season. You can watch on any WiFi device  I open it on a laptop and connect to my TV with an HDMI cable, commentary is by the the Radio Nottingham team, Hodge, Fray etc. I think that anyone can pay on a match by match basis £10. Make sure you've got a good signal and it's spot on.

  11. Jill, Cliff Ton Considering the proximity of our ancestors to each other it would be a good bet that they knew each well, perhaps even friends. My granddad was a keen gardener and between 35 Stockhill  and my other granddad's house on Thorndale I spent enjoyable times with chickens, and gorging on gooseberries and blackcurrants before being treated to a visit to the original Lord Nelson on Percy street.

I recently discovered that in 1939, my great aunt, Rose Olive Bowles (nee SAUNT) lived at 34 Stockhill Circus with her second husband, George Bowles. Hubby number one died in The Great War.

My mother always told me that those houses were the first to be built by the City Council in Nottingham. They were also the first to be modernised in the mid 70s.

My granddad and his 2nd wife Rose M Burns lived at number 35 until his death in 1952. My mother lived there in 1938 when she married my father who lived at 5 Thorndale.

Didn’t that used to be Bennett’s Garage? There was also a radio/electronics shop in that row. ‘Super Radio’?

Yes it was originally Bennetts. I used to help my dad in my school holidays to repair used cars prior to sale but by this time late 1950s it was Hopcrofts Garage. The basement held probably 15 to 20 cars and had small repair facilities, Bill Hopcroft later injected some cash into Notts County F.C. and helped save it from extinction.

  14. Margie, So glad it cheered her up it was very good that's why I can remember even though it must have been around 30 years ago. A bit more than a guess but not absolutely sure about this but I think she said it was one of her or her mother's favourites. Now what did I have for my tea a couple of hours ago?

Do you remember the tap dancing Roly Polys?    I was talking with a relatively new lady after church this morning and she told us that her mum was the very chubby small lady who often came on to dance at the end of their performance!  The conversation started when we were discussing who could do 'the splits'.   We do talk about lots of different subjects.... slywink

Many years ago we went to St.eulalia, Ibiza, our holiday rep was a tallish slim blonde who told us the same about her mother. During our stay we later saw her in a rep's show or maybe it was a karaoke where she performed a brilliant rendition of 'Perfect' I wonder if it is the same lady?
