  1. Yes I remember Dixons little shop on King Street. Bought my first camera there about 1965. A second hand 35mm Voigtlander camera. Start of a life-long love of photography. A long standing photogaphy shop was Heathcote's on Hyson Green, very near to the Leno's cinema.
  2. Thanks for the link to the pics Cliff. None show the shop where my dad worked. It is still there but is now Ali's Fruit & Veg.
  3. Yes, Farrands had a wharehouse and offices on Wigman Rd, just on the roundabout joining Hollington Rd. I worked there in 1965 as a graphic artist doing the posters and sale tickets. The warehouse manager was called Ernie I think. While I was there one of the warehouse staff died suddenly and his name was George. I was only fifteen and straight out of school. His death really hit me as I used to often sit with him in the canteen. Head of the Art Department was John Stapleton, my boss. Some good memories until I got the boot after 6 months due to the introduction of Selective Employment Tax.
  4. Anyone remember The butcher shop at the corner of Hartley Road and Garfield Road. It was owned by Vince Bailey and my father worked there as the main butcher serving customers. His name was Jack and wore a cap. On the other corner was Harrison's the toy shop. And opposite was a cinema, can't remember the name of it though. Anyone got any photos?
  5. Oh yes, I remember Marsdens. On the left corner as you walked down the street. On the opposite side was another shop we called the "Spam Shop". And anyone remember Mrs Cameron's sweet shop, and Stan's chip shop, both on Northgate near the bottom of Gawthorne St.
  6. i went to Claremont from 61 to 65. Yes shooter was the metalwork teacher. His class room was the one nearest the main gate. While I was there in his class he was building a minature steam engine. I recall him running the finished engine on a circular track on valley Road. I remember Mr Reid too (was he the art teacher?). He died on a school climbing trip to the Alps I think it was. Heart attack was the rumour going around the school. I have a photo of all the teachers which i will post later. I'm sure it will jog a few memories. Mr Wheatly always stood out as a bit of a poshy to me, "how dare
  7. We had a few mega bonfires in Gawthorne St (about 100 yards up from North Gate in New Basford) in the late 50s early 60s. I remember one year the fire was so big the windows of the houses were beginning to crack from the heat. Everyone chipped in with rubbish and a few of us would spend a few days collecting from the surrounding area. Was always a magical time with all the neighbours out to celebrate.
  8. Hi everyone. Yes I remember seeing this while in the school playground. Not sure if it was Beech Avenue School or later at Stanley Road School. There was a round white cloud in the clear sky. can't remember a sound but it looked unusual...not like a normal cloud. I later told my mother who said 2 planes had collided somewhere over the city. Something in the back of my mind thinks it was above the Trent polytechnic in Goldsmith St but I have no idea where they ended up crashing. I've just watched the news video from DavidA link above. So it would have been in the playground at Stanley Road sch
