I remember going to the fair with my Mam as a nipper to see the Lord Mayor declare it open and we'd enjoy the look around the sideshows and stalls taking in all the colours and sounds and aromas. Then during the following week at school we'd be asked to write a story about our "trip to the fair" and during art lesson told to capture the scene, on a sheet of sugar paper, by splashing paint about on tables covered with old newspaper.
  2. I remember 'avinago at the Pole Vault at the school's House Sports Day. Never done it before. I just took the pole from the teacher and ran down the runway concentrating on placing the end of the pole in the little trough at the end, like I'd been told. I got off the ground ok, I obviously dint clear the bar, which had been set at an optimistic 6'. However, we did get a point for entering. Come On Sherwood!!!

  5. Scuttlebutt: A Nottingham word derives from: Scuttle.......Wot yer put coal in. Butt............Wot yer keep water in. When unscrupulous Nottingham coal merchants wished to gain an advantage over their competitors they would employ the services of young lads.   6. The living room carpet looks familiar. We had that fitted in our first house and liked the pattern so much we chose it again for our second. I think we bought it from Waring and Gillows.

  18. Talking about ink wells.Do you remember the wooden pen stems that were issued at school, along with the separate nib that fitted into the end? I remember our being told by the teacher to suck the new nib to remove the wax coating and so allow the ink to flow.
  19. Hope it's a clear sky. There's very little "light pollution" at night up here on the East coast so I should get a good view.
  20. Not exactly a celebrity visit but when I worked at the Arnold baths in the 70's I was looking out through the foyer window with a workmate when he said "D'yer know who that is ?" I didn't but he said "That's Tommy Lawton".

  22. My Mam got a signed photo from Henry Cooper during a shopping trip to town I wasn't with her so I don't know where he was. She said he "smelled nice" so I reckon he must have splashed the Brut all over.......I managed to get a signed photo of Sunny Sunblest when he was at the opening of a supermarket. Mam said "E din't look very sunny did e?" I just remembered......I got a signed photo from Charlie Chester at the same time......It was the opening of a supermarket in Hyson Green I think.
