  1. Whilst we are musing about piano players who remembers Mrs Mills and Winifred Atwell with her Black and White Rag which became famous as the theme for Pot Black.
  2. Got to No1 in 1962 He is currently touring with his 60th Anniversary Show and did the Palace Theatre in Mansfield on Oct 8. No show scheduled for Nottingham this year, maybe in the second half of the tour.
  3. As a kid 30th of October was "Mischievious Night" long before Halloween had any prominence. Who remembers "spirit knocking" by tieing cotton to someone's door knocker hiding nearby and using the cotton to knock on the door? Of course when they opened it there was no one there. Wait a while and do it again, then again and being given away by giggling and getting the usual response "If I catch you little boggers I'll bat yer tabs" Lighting bangers until they fizzed and then dropping them in the sewer hoping they would find a pocket of methane and lift all the manhole covers in the
  4. I can remember when they came round the back of the house to pick up your bin and then took it back when empty (photo from Pinterest)
  5. Good to see the Magpies are currently in the last of the play off spots after a thumping 4 - 0 away win at Woking who were above them in the ladder. Their current goal difference could be a decider at the end of the season.
  6. I still have two fake watches, one a "gold Lolex" purchased from the street traders on Penang and the second a fake IWC from the Russian Market in Bejing. The Lolex is almost thirty years old and apart from batteries is still going strong. The IWC is fifteen years old and is one of those that winds itself with the movement of your wrist, still keeps excellent time.
  7. Sitting here on a warm night with the door open I can hear the waves breaking on the beach, the occasional car and rarely the sound of an emergency vehicle siren and very, very rarely the emergency helicopter air lifting some poor unfortunate to another hospital from ours. At the weekend and during school holidays we get the sound of the steam whistle from the tourist train as it chuffs along by the ocean.
  8. In South Australia we have a "container deposit scheme". All beer and soft drink cans and bottles and some cardboard drinks containers have a 10 cent deposit on them when purchased which is redeemed when they are taken back to a recycling centre. I don't know why milk containers and wine and other bottles do not have a deposit on them but the effect of the deposit scheme is that you don't see these items lying around as discarded rubbish as they have a value. What we do see lying about are the cardboard food containers from fast food companies and coffee cups and cigarette butts.
  9. It is a well known fact that the only time people read their car handbook is to change the clock at daylight saving. Why do we call it "Daylight Saving"? we still get the same amount of daylight but at different times according to our manipulation of the clock.
  10. LizzieM, The collective noun for kangaroos and wallabies is a mob and the easiest way to catch them is to wait around the nearest pub, if they are Australians the will not be able to go without a beer for long.
  11. Didn't know that, just watched it on YT, what a brilliant musician.
  12. Apart from being a country music legend he was also a stupendous guitarist. Talking about music snobs, there is a definition "A music snob is someone who can listen to the William Tell overture and not think of the Lone Ranger"
  13. Didn't he do a country music slot on Radio Nottingham way back when?
  14. Great job. Well done Jill Are you thinking about standing in for our late poetry legend - Chulla

  18. Lee & Hunt, Arkwright Works Crocus Street Nottingham also made machine tools particularly saws and radial drills in the late 1800's William Watts of Canal Street was another well known and long lived Nottingham machine tool company, I'm not sure if they were manufacturers or just merchants. Must have been near Widdowson's factory. As an ex toolmaker I have been fortunate to see the industry develop from rudimentary copy/duplicating/pantograph machines and spark eroders in the 60's where the final fitting was done by hand to the muti axis cnc machines supported by CADCAM sof
  19. Thanks for that notty ash, seems a bit complicated, the maggies had best finish top of the table and then no problem with play-offs.
  20. Good to see the Magpies climbing up the ladder but can anyone tell me the meaning of the three lines which are shown on the league ladder on the BBC website for the National League? We can only hope for a swift return to league status. As of today the first line is below Halifax, the second line is below Yeovil and the third line is above Harrogate and this is the group that Notts are in. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49942944?intlink_from_url=https://www.bbc.com/news/england/nottingham&link_location=live-reporting-story
  21. I remember the Lady Bay Railway bridge well as we used to walk over it to get to the Forest ground after parking on Meadow Lane and a couple of pints of Home Brewery 4 or 5 star? in the Magpie. Like Albert the area looks nothing like what I remember. Can only fix the location from the County ground and the Lady Bay Bridge. When did they make old track bed into a traffic bridge?
