  1. It very much looks like The Magpies position in the top tiers of football is over after the home defeat against MK Dons. Talking of names that don't even sound like football teams I had a look at the National League table to see who might replace County and it looks like it may be Leyton Orient. At least a team with a proper name. It looks like along with them either Salford or Solihull Moors will be promoted, Salford is a rugby league club and Solihull Moors a name that comes from an amalgamation. Looking through the teams in the NL I see former league clubs that I remember from my
  2. The good old Limax Maximus sometimes called the Leopard slug, can be up to 8" long. Just sprinkle some salt around and they will not cross it. if you put it on them they just sort of dissolve.
  3. What about Sookholme Docks near Warsop?
  4. Looks like Forest won't reach a play off place and County almost certain to get relegated so the only thing left to say is "Come on you Stags"
  5. Can't remember who's beer the Horse and Groom sold or if it was a Free House but I have heard that the local legend has it that the women of Linby invented the pancake. Another first for Notts
  6. It's Main Street in Linby just down from the Horse and Groom if you carry on down the B6011 it becomes Linby Lane Papplewick and leads to what was one of my favorite pubs, The Griffins Head, it was a Home Brewery house
  7. Sorry to disappoint you Brew but there is very little evidence to indicate it was ever used by Druids. it is a glacial deposit, a conglomeration of sand, pebbles and limestone. The hole in the middle is manmade and there is another local name for it "The Altar Stone" so who knows. The Hemlock Stone at Bramcote and Bobs Rock at Stapleford have other legends attached to them
  8. DJ360 I think you will find that they are irrigated areas of fields using what is called a centre pivot irrigator which forms a circle, they are widely used here in OZ too and because of their size can only really be seen from up above. Here are some standing out in the iron ore region of the Pilbara in WA Photo ABC

  10. As a country we should be proud that we eat both large animals shown on our coat of arms (image from Wiki) Don't know about eating the lions, swans and piping shrike shown on the states coats of arms but it is probable at some time in the past the two birds have graced someones table
  11. Is this what you are looking for Litcho 1 you can see the anchor and chain on this building https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library/image-details/poster/ntgm004785/posterid/ntgm004785.html
  12. Roo meat is a very lean meet around 98% fat free and nutritionally very good for you. None of it is farmed, it is all from the wild population of Kangaroos. It is widely available in all major supermarkets and butchers but I don't eat it at home but do eat it when out as they seem able to cook it so much better than I can. If you do try it medium rare is the most you want to cook it to. It gets very tough if you cook it to well done.
  13. Kangaroos feed hungry humans here in OZ It is a very lean meat but must not be overcooked. It is also used for pet food.
  14. Pity I can't get it here Brew I'll have to make do with YT

  16. I remember that the Castle Barge used to be a Mansfield Brewery "house" Good beer when it was brewed in Mansfield
  17. Great day for the local clubs Forest - hoping for a place in the play offs, I think an automatic promotion spot is a bit too far Stags - Still a chance of automatic promotion County - A good step on the way to survival. Come on all you football fans in Nottinghamshire get on down to Meadow Lane and support the Magpies in their battle to avoid relegation. If I was there I'd be going
  18. There are five of them MargieH Only ever heard the one that Beekay suggested, inaccurate it may be but it is a stirring piece of music especially when heard with Land of Hope and Glory at the Last Night of the Proms
  19. That reminds me of the story of the soldier that took some shoes in to be soled and heeled just before the war started. He was shipped off to Singapore before he could go back to the cobblers and pick up his shoes. He was captured at the fall of Singapore and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner on the Burma railway. Having survived that he was repatriated an eventually demobed. He returned home and after a few days decided to get out his suit and go for a few drinks. He tried on his suit to see if it still fitted and in the pocket found the cobblers ticket which got him to thinking if the
  20. The opening scene includes words from W H Auden's poem written for the film. Even without the pictures you could see the train from the words in the poem
  21. Redback spiders are quite common in any outdoor dunny here in OZ
  22. Too right SG most of the stuff we used to watch would not get aired today. It Ain't Half Hot Mum, 'Allo 'Allo, Steptoe and Son, 'Til Death Do Us Part, Are you being Served to name a few
  23. I'd like to start by correcting those that use the term coal house, the correct Nottinghamese is coal'us. Like DJ360 ours was directly opposite the back door and my dad put boards across the inside of the door jambs to stop the coal falling out. We too got concessionary coal so it was never empty, the only problem that the coal fire had a "back-boiler" so we had to have a fire even in the summer to heat the water. In the early days a truck would come round and tip a ton of coal on the road outside the front gate and it was my job to barrow it round the back into the coal'us. It earned me
  24. Definitely get a 3D printer, a mate and I share one, the last job was a replacement knob for a BBQ. Get the best one you can afford and if you are looking to do detailed work look at the specs and get the smallest step resolution. Most mid range printers come with 0,1 mm (.004") step resolution, satisfactory for most applications but may need some hand finishing for smooth objects. If you have a smart phone with a reasonable quality camera it can serve as a 3D scanner by using many of the free apps that are available. This website has thousands of 3d models that also includes sp
