  1. Stags - Now let's have a look at the Stags prospect of getting an automatic promotion spot. Assuming no more stupid wobbles as per lats week.

9 April home vs Forest Green Rovers who are almost certain to be relegated. A win 3 points

13 April away vs MK Dons who are a promotion rival. A loss 0 points

16 April home vs Accrington Stanley who will be just playing out the season. A win 3 points

20 April home vs Gillingham who have no chance of a play-off spot. A win 3 points

27 April away vs Barrow who are a definite play-off participant. A loss 0 points

    My prediction, another nine points.

As Stockport look likely to be champions then it is between Stags, Wrexham and MK Dons for the other two automatic places. Wrexham look to have a difficult few final games with three of them vs teams vying for promotion, including their seasons last game at home vs Stockport. MK Dons have only three games left having played 1 or 2 games more than their rivals which includes the game against the Stags.

If by some disaster and further wobbles the Stags don't make the automatic spot then they will go out early in the play-offs.

Chesterfield have already been promoted as runaway leaders of the Vanarana National League with 3 games left to be played. The Magpies and Spireites can look forward to local rivalries being continued and as the whether Mansfield join in on that or move into Division One remains to be seen

  2. Only six games left for Forest to get themselves out of the mire and avoid the drop. Here are Nostroztalgians thoughts.

These predictions are based on the fact that the City Ground is no longer the fortress that it once was W5, D4, L7 and that their away form is atrocious only having W2, D4, L10

13 April at home vs Wolves who have a good away record. A draw 1 point

21 April away vs Everton whose home record is not that good. A draw 1 point

27 April home vs Manchester City who are well in the title race. A loss 0 points

4 May away vs Sheffield United who may well be relegated by then and playing for pride. A draw 1 point

11 May home vs Chelsea who may well have lost interest by then. A win 3 points

19 May away vs Burnley perhaps relegated then and playing for pride, have a poor home record. A win 3 points

My prediction, nine more points in all, will that be enough to save them?

Luton look to have the slightly easier run home so will it be goal difference that saves Forest?

What are the thoughts of those that follow the Reds?

  3. Forest - The Reds have not benefitted from Everton having 2 more penalty points being awarded against them by the EPL. Everton are now 2 points ahead of Forest with a game in hand. Forest play Everton away on Sunday 21st April. Will be an interesting fixture that could have a major effect on who gets relegated.

what were the Red Men doing to night had they all gone to sleep?

Could easily have been different if not for that disastrous own goal start they gave Spurs. They certainly had enough chances but as usual did not take them.

I am sure there are more?

    There certainly are Mary

Wards and Stones from Sheffield. Stones Bitter wasn't a bad drop

Holes and Warwick and Richardson from Newark. I liked the odd pint of Holes Bitter in one of the pubs in my village.

Somehow I don't think the next generation of drinkers will remember the myriad of craft breweries that are emerging with the same fondness of those mentioned here. Perhaps Castle Rock brewery may be developing that heritage.

Mary, I think you will find they are an American Company founded in 1919 in Sterling, Illinois. You might wonder how I know this, well, I have been to their headquarters as when I was working we supplied some of their plastic injection moulding tools from here in Australia.

Not my parents, but my grandad. I was often sent to the off license in the village with a jug for his Shipstones bitter. Took a big glug once, never again. Had to get his Craven A untipped if he needed some too.

  8. Forest - Only goal difference keeps them out of the "drop zone" after a 3-1 defeat at Spurs. It didn't start well for the Reds after Murillo diverted a cross ball into his own net. Just before that he almost scored goal of the season when well in his own half when he spotted the Spurs 'keeper off his line and attempted to lob him, unfortunately the effort dropped just wide. Chris Wood scored again to equalise for Forest and they went in 1-1 at half time. Spurs lead was restored by Micky van de Ven in the 56th minute with what my wife would call "a Bobby Charlton special" with a screamer from just outside the penalty area that found the top corner of the net. 5 minutes later Spurs went 3 up when Pedro Porro hammered home a cross. We will wait and see what excuses Nuno comes up with this time, admittedly a point was probably a hard ask. Home to mid table Wolves next Saturday as the number of games left to guarantee survival continue to dwindle.

  9. I love my cricket. Test matches are the pinnacle of the sport. Kerry Packer started the slow decline of the game with his World Series Cricket in 1977 with the game being given the name "Pajama Cricket" by the traditionalists, which initially split cricket in half in Australia. Today we have the 20/20 big bash which is slowly reducing in popularity and the number of games this season were reduced. I cannot comment on the 100 as I have never seen it. The rise of the IPL has put players wages into the stratosphere in countries where the game is a way of life. I see the Saudi's are trying to get in on the act too.

There was nothing like sitting back in the English summer listening to the soft Somerset burr of John Arlott on the transistor radio. You did not need a television as in those days commentators painted word pictures not like the shouty over-hyped ones we have today.

  10. County - On the winning list again at last. Their first win at Meadow Lane under Maynard. That man Langstaff popped in a penalty during time on in the first half after Luca Ashby Hammond saved a spot kick. County scored twice in the second half with goals from Jones and O'Brien. Harrogate had its' chances but could not convert them to goals. Away at Walsall next Saturday. 15th on the ladder, there is not much interest left for County fans as a mid-table position looks likely after a promising start.

Stags - Crawley Town crush wobbly Stags 1-4 at Field Mill knocking them out of an automatic promotion spot, MK Dons having replaced them. The loss was the Stags heaviest loss in the campaign this season. Crawley took the lead in the 4th minute. 20 minutes later they went two up to go in at half time looking comfortable. Two goals in two minutes in the 55th and 56th minutes saw Stags chances of salvaging anything from this game fly out of the window. Boateng scored an 80th minute consolation goal for the Stags. They have 2 games in hand over their rivals the first is on Tuesday against cellar dwellers Forest Green Rovers which should be a win, but who knows when Mansfield start to wobble. Next Saturday they are away at MK Dons in what could well shape the final 3 for automatic promotion.

Forest - Away at Spurs on Sunday and with Luton, after winning 2-1 at home to AFC Bournemouth, now equal with Forest on points but behind on goal difference. Everton beat Burnley 1-0 to see them climb up the table, but still under the cloud of another penalty. A point at White Hart Lane would be a welcome return for Forest.

They considered how their oil revenues could help ALL of their population.

I saw no evidence of such thinking here.

    I still don't.

    Same here.

We keep giving our resources away and stubbornly refuse to insist on adding value to it here in Australia.

If you are China you pay AU$3.80 per gigajoule for LNG. until 2027. Australian domestic consumers are paying around AU$10 a gigajoule. There is a risk that the East Coast and Southern Australia gas supplies will not be able to meet domestic demand in winter 2025 due to having to meet export contracts. Can someone tell me under what strange system of economics does this work?

Make me wonder, what sort of threat the officer thought, that a woman 60+ years his senior could be to him. Did he think she was some sort of 'Gangsta Granny', hell bent on causing carnage. At this side of the world, one can only speculate, (until we hear from our correspondant Oz.)

If you remember the case where a police officer tasered 95 year old Clare Nolan who fell, hit her head and had a bleed on the brain. Sadly she subsequently died of her injuries.

The police officer Kristian White aged 33 has today been charged with manslaughter. He has formally pleaded not guilty and been released on bail until his trial is heard on 11th November, later this year

Except even if you spent £125 and came away with a premium brand SMEG you would still have a toaster made in China with the same gubbins inside as the one from the Range.

It is very difficult to find something that is not "Made in China" these days.

I don't think our pollie wafflers know what sovereign capability and sovereign capacity mean.

Long time since I've heard the word "gubbins", it was one of my dad's favourites alongside "doins"

  14. Stags - Doncaster Rovers did the Stags a massive favour last night by beating Wrexham 1-0 at the Eco Power Stadium, sounds nowhere near as good as Belle Vue as I knew it, last night. That leaves both Stags and Stockport with a game in hand over Wrexham. Barring a major wobble I can't see any other club outside the current top three getting an automatic promotion spot. Stags play 7th placed Crawley Town at home, Stockport and Wrexham both have an easier games this weekend Stockport playing 22nd placed Sutton Utd away, whist Wrexham play 23rd placed Colchester United away. The battle for the play-off spot will remain interesting until the last game of the league season.

  15. For those cats that are not kept at home during the day and indoors overnight then in my view the only good cat is a flat cat. I regularly see the remains of our local native wildlife, not just birds, killed by both domestic and feral animals.

There are many cat repellant plants you can put in the garden, we have a number of lavender plants around and never see any cats. Rosemary and Oregano work well too.

  16. Forest - Arsenal did the Reds a big favour last night by beating Luton 2-0 which now puts Forest 3 points clear of Luton on the same number of games. Forest away at Spurs on Sunday where a point is probably the best they can hope for. Luton are at home to 11th placed AFC Bournemouth on Saturday. Come Sunday it is quite possible that they will both again be on the same number of points as the number of games left dwindles.

Daylight saving plays havoc with the Cold Coast Airport at Coolangatta, The main runway cuts through the border of NSW and Queensland which have an hour time difference in summer. The airport runs on Queensland time but if you have a mobile phone the time can change by an hour when walking through the terminal depending whether your phone is pinging from a NSW or a QLD tower

It's as I said earlier Oz shoplifting has steadily increased and the rise in population, the apparent lack pf respect for the law plus no fear of punishment must be a large part of the blame for it. Some will claim it's desperation due to the cost-of-living crisis but I don't honestly believe it.

The approved procedure for stopping a thief is so onerous and coupled with the rise in knife crime among the young most don't bother and simply accept it as a fact of life.

One wrong step and the victim is as likely to faces charges as the thief.

No wonder the UK is stuffed and we in OZ are well on the way to being the same. When, why and how did it all go so wrong!

Is it the growing gulf between the haves and have nots?

Is it the rise of legal and illegal immigration?

Are the police so chronically undermanned and under resourced that they cannot investigate "minor" and non violent crimes.

Is it the justice system that so often hands out sentences that do not fit the crime committed?

Is the bail system too lenient?

  19. 2 minutes ago, Brew said:

Police will only attend shoplifting incidents if there is violence against a store worker, a suspected thief is detained or officers are needed to secure evidence.

So who is going to police action against these thieves and how are they supposed to do it?

Yet again, it looks like the bad guys are winning or are the police too busy pursuing hate crimes.

Maybe they all forgot to adjust their clocks at the weekend, and now they don't know what time it is or where they are.

When they change the clocks, I wonder how long it takes the good folks at the Museum of Timekeeping in Upton Hall to change all theirs or don't they bother. I cannot abide a clock that shows the wrong time. You cannot believe how long it takes me to get the clock on the microwave and the wall oven, which are adjacent to each other to show the same time. Surely the people who design wall ovens could make the changing of the time on the clock easier. We put our clocks back on Sunday, darker evenings from then until October. Yah, Boo, Hiss.

It would be easy to blame the cost of living on the rise in shoplifting but as Ben will attest stealing from shops has always been with us. It has also steadily increased and the rise in population, the apparent lack pf respect for the law plus no fear of punishment must have some bearing on why that is.

Today the MD of Drakes supermarkets, a smaller version of Coles and Woolies which has stores in South Australia and Queensland, has announced that high value goods, mainly expensive cuts of meat will be packaged in a container that has a GPS tracker embedded within it. The tracker is removed at the till which means that the customer cannot use the self-check outs. We have just had our police commissioner on radio saying that they cannot guarantee police attendance if a GPS tracker indicates that goods have left the store without payment.

Drakes say they are using the same system that is used in some UK supermarkets. Can anyone (Ben?) tell me what police action is taken in this instance in the UK.
