    Say no more

    That's a rather sophisticated air rifle plantfit/trogg.

Sure beats the hell out of my old .22 BSA with V notch sights.  I used Webley pellets they came in a cardboard box and I bought them from the local garage, 500 in a box. Same place as I bought my quarter inch square gatta elastic back in the day.

  3. The Reg Guest Trio appeared regularly at the Golden Diamond Social Club in Sutton in Ashfield.

I remember they did some great covers of the Shadows hits of the time.

I think the club is still going, now called just The Diamond Photo from the Chad

The Diamond Club in Sutton, a Tardis-like building that has been a music venue now for more than 50 years.

Trogg, an air rifle or a catapult might solve the problem.

I'd love either one of those to get rid of the pesky Indian Mynah's, an introduced species, that bullies all the smaller native birds. I was a dab hand at potting the odd pigeon with my gatta back in the day with rejected ball bearings supplied by my dad when he worked at Ransome and Marles in Newark after the war.

  5. Forest - Apparently, according to media reports, Forest have appealed their four-point deduction for breaching the EPL's profit and sustainability rules. Nick De Marco KC is leading Forest's legal team.

Ironically had the team performed better where and when it mattered, four points should not have been an issue. 9 games to go to get themselves out of this mess without relying on any appeal leniency.

I have to say Oz with those figures I'd find it difficult to call them a rip-off.

Brew, my biggest beef with the supermarket giants is that they pay the farmers and producers of fresh product and meat a pittance and then on sell to their customers at vastly inflated prices. Farmers and growers are often "forced" by supermarkets to sell them product at less than the cost of production. Of course, supermarkets claim that transport costs, labour, packaging, operating and supply chain costs are rising but, in some cases, growers have been forced to accept prices lower that five years ago.

For example, one grower recently let slip what he gets for selling his green apples to Woolworths and it showed that woolies had a 100% mark up on that product. Admittedly, not all mark ups are that high and some are seasonally affected, but growers and producers need a fair price otherwise we will soon not have any.

  7. Shrinkflation has risen its' ugly head again.

Recent media articles have shown that Kelloggs (now called Kellanova?) the cereal giant is one of the worst.

In 2019 a box of Sultana Bran weighed in at 850 grams and cost $6 now in 2024 it is only 700 grams and costs $9. The unit price for 100 grams has increased 82%. They and other products claim they are keeping prices affordable for the consumer. No! You are just ripping us off.

I remember taking a cylinder head there for skimming.  He also supplied a new head gasket and a set of other seals needed to complete the job.

When I was an apprentice toolmaker, back in the sixties, and doing night shift 10:00pm to 7:00am one of the guys used the factory crane to pull the motor out of his Zephyr 4. It was a 4 cylinder 1700cc motor. He had stripped the motor right down and had the cylinder head on a Parkson Milling machine being skimmed, the block was on a Newall Jig Mill/Borer boring and honing out the cylinders and skimming the block and the crankshaft was on a Jones and Shipman cylindrical grinder having the journals reground. All this was happening around 1:30 am when to his horror the managing director who had been out to some industry booze up decided to look in on the night shift to see how it was going. The MD was carefully steered around the shop so as to avoid the bits of engine being worked on and went home happy. Luckily the guy who's car it was was working one of the big copy mills which meant he had some time to do other stuff. He had brought all the stuff he needed to do a refurb of the engine, valve guides, big and little end bearings, oversize pistons and rings. seals/gaskets etc. By the time the day shift arrived at 7:00am the motor was back together and in the car, not without a lot of help from the rest of the shift during the night and surprisingly he drove home in the morning.

Yes but why did they build what looks like a public toilet at the top of the hill?

No idea over the Qz, but here the operating profits in the retail grocery sector during 2022-23 were down 41.5% on the previous year and that average operating margins in the sector fell from 3.2% to 1.8%. Put another way, for every £100 of sales, the typical supermarket is making a profit of just £1.80. Not an unreasonable profit margin and for most businesses is embarrassingly low, only volume of sales make supermarkets a viable operation.

Woolworths net profit increased 4.6% to AU$1.62 billion on sales of AU$64.29 billion. Profitabillity went from 5.3% to 6% over the year. Woolworths paid a dividend of $0.58 per share, a 9.4% increase on the previous year.

Cole saw a 4.8% rise in profit to AU$1.1billion over the year.

Both supermarkets are reporting increasing stock losses due to theft and incorrect scanning on self check outs. Coles have said that their stock losses were up by 20% over the previous year.

I meant the financial arrangement; is the money borrowed or from the reserves, if borrowed, (which is probable), what are the interest rates, how long to pay back, how big an impact will the annual repayments have on services etc.

Sorry Brew, no information, commercial in confidence?

Highly likely to be borrowed money. There is no doubt it will impact services and support for the stadium is mixed even within parties. The libs have won most seats but will not have a majority and will have to govern with the help of the greens, independents and independent groups.

There is a perfectly good football ground in Hobart it does not have a roof or the required crowd capacity that the AFL wants, if they want more than that the let them pay for it instead of sponging off every state government as well as federal governments. Many greens and independents are totally against it.

Our state has "given" at least half a billion to one of the local AFL clubs this last year and has funded a "gather round" wher all AFL clubs play here over a weekend. Of course we do not know what this funding was as it is again "commercial in confidence".

I 'summitted' mighty Billinge Hill, via the North Eastern route recently opened up.

Sounds like an Everest ascent up the South Col. Did you take your ice axe and crampons?

I was curious about Billing Hill and found there were two. One near St Helens and one near Blackburn?

According to Wiki the one near Blackburn is the tallest at 807 feet whilst the one near St Helens is only 507 feet high.

  15. We don't have Lidl in Australia, we do have Aldi though. the supermarket giants of the grocery world in OZ are the Woolworths (not the old UK Woolies) and Coles duopoly who have 65% market share and ripping us off right royally whilst making mega profits. What did we expect, that's capitalism at work.  ALDI has a 10% market share with around 600 stores across Australia. Coles have 846 and Woolworths have 1,114 stores. Our Prime minister recently announced a 12 month inquiry into the Supermarket industry by our Consumer and Competition Commission. The remainder are independents or independent groups. By comparison, the two largest chains in the UK are Tesco and Sainsbury who have 45% of the market.

  16. Tomato season is coming to an end here in Adelaide, the tip here is not to plant outdoors before the soil temperature reaches 16 degrees and all threat of frost is past.

It is really strange that the best time to plant sweet peas here is in March/April as we head into our cooler months. Here they recommend a minimum of 6 hours a day sunlight.

Seems a bit strange that we are planting sweet peas at the same time as you when our seasons are opposite.

I find it difficult to believe Tasmania, who's population is only two thirds that of Nottingham, can afford a prestige project like a stadium, although the financial details are not known.

Presumably the Tasmanian  health service is funded by the Australian government so the money for a stadium is taking nothing away from the bed/doctor/ambulance shortage.

The funding of the stadium is known, AU$375milion from the Tasmanian government and AU$240 million from the Australian Federal Government. this does not include the inevitable blow out in costs.

The Tasmanian and all other states/territory health services are jointly funded by both State and Federal governments. Federal funding of hospitals is round about 50% of the costs. Since 2011 the Federal government agreed to fund 45% of the growth of delivering hospital services but in 2017-18 capped this growth at 6.5% per year. This leaves the state or territory governments with increasing costs in funding health services. The state spending money on a stadium is reducing funding for other things among them health services.

You can still get Penguin biscuits not sure if the kids are thrilled by them like we used to be, never tried both, when you get to one of the meetups you must bring us so samples OZ

Mary, apparently you can get Aussie Tim Tam biscuits at Waitrose and Ocado (whatever that is) for two pounds fifty a packet and you can do your own Tim Tam Slam and a blind test to see which is best. My favourite is Salted Caramel or Double Choc.

They will be available in all major supermarkets soon.

  20. County - Sadly back to their losing ways and fall to 14th position after a 1- 2 loss at Meadow Lane to now 19th placed Salford City. Conor McAleny put Salford ahead in the 32nd minute with goal that went in off the post after Sam Austin was dispossessed. Dan Crowley equalised for the Magpies 9 minutes after half time. Both sides could have added to their tallies in the second half until McAleny got his brace in the 87th minute to give Salford the points and deny Maynard his first home win since becoming Counties coach. After a brilliant start it looks like an also ran season for the Magpies and leaving the fans wondering what has gone wrong. Away at 20th placed Swindon Town next Friday

Stags - Did not fare much better with a 1-1 draw at Field Mill against lowly Colchester United. The Stags went behind to a goal by Harry Anderson in the 13th minute and a series of saves by the Colchester 'keeper Goodman saw them keep that lead until Lewis Brunt poked the equaliser home after in the 63rd minute after a goalmouth scramble. Stags were livid when they believed a justifiable penalty was turned down in the last minute when Swan was fouled as he was getting ready to shoot. With almost two thirds of the possession Stags were left wondering how they surrendered 2 points that has reduced their lead over Stockport who have a game in hand to two points. Away at third placed Wrexham next Friday afternoon.

Forest - No game this weekend, home against 14th placed Crystal Palace next Saturday when the battle for survival starts in earnest with another home game against 12th placed Fulham on Tuesday 2nd April. It is no understatement to say that these are "must-win games"

  21. The State of Tasmania has voted today. Before this election Tasmania was the only state with a Liberal (Conservative) government in power. It is a third term Liberal Government and now bidding for a fourth term. One quarter of the voters used their option of a pre poll vote.

    The main issues are :-

    1. The building of the Macquarie  Point Stadium. This is planned to be a roofed stadium that is being insisted upon by the AFL football national body before Tasmania can field a team in the national competition. It is expected to start being built in 2025 and finished in 2029 at the staggering cost of AU$615 million. The Tasmanian taxpayer finding AU$375 million and the Federal Government providing AU$240 million of Australian taxpayer funds
    2. The state of the health system, inability to get a doctors appointment, delays of ambulance response times, ramping of ambulances at hospitals as beds are not available for patients.
    3. The cost and availability of housing.

As I have said before, yet again, pollies spending taxpayer monies inappropriately. If the AFL want a stadium then I suggest they pay for it and let the government spend the money on the real priorities.

The main difference in voting in Tasmania is that they are the only state that uses the Hare-Clarke method of proportional representation which is one of the best I have seen. Hare-Clark Electoral System in Tasmania (tec.tas.gov.au)

I will not attempt to explain it and I suggest that those with an interest in politics click on the link above, it is only a short read but explains it in plain English. For information there are 5 electorates across Tasmania and each elects seven members of parliament. The party that gets the most members elected forms the government. For a majority a party has to win 18 of the 35 places. The polls are indicating a labor win whilst the political pundits are saying there will be a minority government.

We await the outcome with interest.

Well said Jill its absolutely terrible the way she has been treated when nobody knew what was wrong.

No-one royalty or otherwise deserves cancer, I hope she and Chiller both make a full recovery.

  23. Can someone explain to me how someone who was implicated in the Greensill Capital lobbying scandal can rise to become Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. 'Dodgy Dave' is now in South Australia glad handing our pollies as they give him AU$4,6 billion dollars in support to British industry to clear bottlenecks in production of nuclear reactors for ultimate use in Australia's new nuclear submarines that are likely to be obsolete before they are even started. He was also responsible for initiating the Brexit referendum that in part has left the UK in the mess it is in today.

    Thanks Stuart.C

What a crock of crap the decision to freeze pensions is without regard to the impact it is having on many older people especially.  It feels good to be "out of sight, out of mind". Could I have some of the money back that I contributed to NI as I am not getting the full value of those contributions? I wonder if I am still eligible for a vote?
