  1. Just remember folks that the battle against this virus is unlikely to be over until we have a vaccine to help us combat it.

Today was Australia's worst ever day with the number of infections and deaths

Here in Australia we have divided into two groups, those states and territories with few or no recent cases such as SA, Qld, NT, ACT, WA, and Tas.

In NSW there are a number of hot spots around pubs, clubs, a restaurant,  places of worship and aged care homes.

In Victoria the situation is becoming more serious with infections in triple figures for more than a fortnight, yesterday there was 459 cases and sadly 10 deaths. In Melbourne and some nearby areas face masks have been made mandatory when outside although there is an anti-social media campaign against wearing "face nappies".

In NSW police have been granted an injunction against groups holding a BLM rally but organisers have said they will still still go ahead. I know what I would do with these idiots who are effectively endangering the whole of society.

Even though we have had very few cases here in SA we in the at risk age group and are still being very cautious in where we go and what we do.

    Take care everyone

  2. Going back to the sixties/seventies.

Cleethorpes should be at the bottom of that list by miles, went there once, never again!

Not over keen on Skeg either, far too commercial. Jinglebells was sort of OK. By far the best was Golden Sands at Mablethorpe in those days it was not too developed, a great beach for playing cricket on, if only the sea had been blue and not cocoa coloured. Often used to have one of the beach huts and still got the scar on my thumb from a tin of Fray Bentos corned beef for the sarnies.

Until recently, pedestrians on the southern Gold Coast were able  to travel between Queensland and New South Wales unhindered and without checks.

I can't help feeling sorry for those people that live in areas close to state borders especially when all their services, doctors, shops etc are in another state that has closed the border with the state they live in and having to get a pass to go over an arbitrary line on a map

  4. Melbourne has been hit by a resurgence of corona virus with the number of cases in the hundreds over the last few days. The media reporting indicates that it resulted from poorly handled security of returnees in hotel quarantine. It has now spread to pockets in New South Wales resulting in Queensland closing its borders to people from two council areas in NSW.

Meanwhile here in South Australia we are still Covid19 free, however I fully expect a resurgence after authorities allow 25,000 per game in to two Aussie rules game being held in Adelaide in the coming days.

I really do not understand the logic that makes them think they can do this safely at this point in time.

Keep safe everyone and remember, it is not over until its over and we have a proven ant-viral that can be rolled out to all.

  5. July 6th saw the death of Charlie Daniels aged 83, best known for his hit country classic "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"

Other hits included Uneasy Rider, (What this world needs is) A Few More Rednecks and Long Haired Country Boy

He was an accomplished guitar, banjo and mandolin player but an awesome fiddle player as can be seen on many of his recordings.

    RIP Charlie Daniels.

  6. On the 6th July we lost one of the great composers of scores for film and TV, Ennio Morricone aged 91.

Who can ever forget the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or those from the other spaghetti westerns.

If you look at what he has composed you will be amazed at the number of films he has written the scores for.

Ennio Morricone, a prodigious talent, thank you for the music.

  7. Ben,

Your two penn'orth is welcome and I am certain that the would be many who agree with you.

If it happens it will be a sad day and if it does I am likely to relinquish my British passport and become an Aussie especially if British passport holders have to get visas to travel around Europe.

  8. nonnaB Greensborough is not in any form of lockdown so your cousin is free to come and go at will.

We have received another batch of ex pats returning from Malaysia and they are now in lockdown in hotels for two weeks with regular testing.

The restrictions have been relaxed further and we can now stand at the bar and have a beer, restaurants are fully open provided they abide by the latest social distancing rules of one person per square metre. We are still "cautious" but had our first meal out last week so a better form of "normality" is slowly returning. I can assure you that I have no intention of going to Melbourne at the moment. You keep safe too.

  9. Following an upsurge of cases in Melbourne (Victoria) the state government has put 3,000+ people in nine public housing high rise towers into what they are calling "hard lockdown". At the moment it is expected to last 5 days whilst everyone is tested for Covid 19. They cannot leave their units for any reason other than a medical emergency. The government has allocated 500 police to enforce the lockdown by actively patrolling all floors of the units some of which are 20 storeys high. The residents are saying that they are feeling like criminals and unless this is handled very carefully it will not end well.

I hope that the opening of the pubs, and restaurants over this weekend in the UK does not lead to a spike in cases, this pandemic is far from over,

    take care everyone.

I'm intrigued as to the agreed basis of your meeting with an 'Adviser'.  What was 'the deal'?

It was done via a face to face interview supported by a review of my school reports and speaking with the teachers and yes I did say I did not want to be an artificer as I did not want any part of the armed forces or merchant marine. He did say that he thought I would be better suited in a technical/engineering role he offered some suggestions and industry types but said ultimately the choice was mine.

I only commented on the basis that there was some form career advice available in the mid sixties. I was not aware of which organisation provided it.

At the time many had already decided to work in the local mines as the money on offer was often irresistible with student and trades roles in mining, electrical and engineering

  11. I left school in the mid 60's and I am almost certain we had careers advisors then as I remember being told that as I was good with my hands I should be an Engine Room Artificer and suggested the Merchant Marine as a career. I had no idea what an artificer was so I looked it up in a dictionary and decided it was not for me.

My dad was adamant that I was not going down the pit so I started looking for apprenticeships. The first job I was offered was as an electronics engineering apprentice, I had to decline that job as getting there via public transport took almost two hours each way. Strangely enough I ended up working for a division of the same company when we came to Australia in 1975

  12. Here in South OZ we have had three new covid 19 cases after having none for around a month. The difference this time is that they have a source that is from 280 repatriated Aussies that returned from Mumbai on a "mercy" flight and have been put in mandatory quarantine with regular testing.

Victoria (Melbourne) is still struggling with new outbreaks and have locked down at suburb level in a bid to control the spread. Our borders with Victoria will remain closed beyond the promised reopening date due to the current situation.

Keep safe everyone, this is not over yet and I hope that the opening of pubs etc on Monday does not result in a spike of new cases.
