  2. We are lucky in OZ we do not have a license fee, I certainly wouldn't pay for one given the dross they mostly serve up.

On the odd occasion we watch "live TV" other than sport we record it and zap through the endless ads on the commercial channels.

Just a question, if you record a live program and watch it later does that need a license?

  3. To all Nottstalgians in cold climes please spare a thought for those firefighters in Australia that will be working on Christmas Day and throughout the festive season in an effort to control bushfires across many states.

My thoughts go out to those that have lost loved ones during this time and to those that have lost not only their homes, their beloved animals and all their memories.

The weather where we are is forecast to be back in the forties again by the weekend after a Christmas day in the thirties.

Have a happy and safe festive season.

Probably because the bird of that name has the habit of flying headlong into moving cars and trucks.

Yes pink and grey and have no road sense as they swoop low when coming across roads, one hit my wing mirror once and smashed it to pieces.

I am a "ten pound pom" and have to say it is the best ten quid that Australia ever spent.

    NSW Collieries

Ayup, many of the collieries that you knew have and are becoming close to being impacted by the bushfires west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains and the Burragorang Valley and houses have been lost on the outskirts of Lithgow

  6. It was reported today that Martin Peters has died aged 76

Probably best remembered for scoring in the 1966 World Cup Final

I prefer to remember him as player that was all class and a great footballing brain.

Alas another part of my youth gone, R.I.P Martin and thanks for memories.

Learning some new Ausie words here Oz.  What's smoko?

Kransky I can see but I've never heard the word before

Smoko is the morning or afternoon tea break when you stop work for a cup of tea/coffee and a cigarette (Smoko)

Interestingly the miners here call their "snap" "crib" and have underground rooms to have their meal breaks, crib  rooms.

Kransky is the Aussiefied short for name of a Slovenian sausage kranjska klobasa. The main ingredients are pork and bacon with garlic and sea salt.

They are hot smoked and cured, they are eaten cold or cooked. They were introduced to Australia by immigrants in the 50's.

The chilli cheese kransky is a favourite of mine.

I was listening to your PM talking last night.  He seems to think it's all pretty normal and nothing to do with climate change.

Fires are a normal part of the Australian landscape. Many were started last night by dry lightning as the change came through. However there is no doubt that weather events are becoming more abnormal with regard to drought and heat.

Politicians the world over have a habit of denying anything which does not fit with their political mantra. He has been vilified in the media for going on holiday to Hawaii during the current bushfire emergency that grips much of Australia at the moment.

  9. It is way too hot here 45 deg and the wind is blowing a "gutsa" with trees down everywhere.

4 days with temps over 40 and a minimum of 30 overnight last night. Relief is in sight as we are expecting a cool change this evening

Major and dangerous fires to the north east of the city.

In NSW Sydney is ringed by fire and their worst fire weather day is yet to come with soaring temperatures and wind due on Saturday.

Unfortunately two volunteer firefighters were killed last night whilst fighting fires to the south west of Sydney. Our thoughts go out to their family, the rest of the truck crew that were injured and all volunteer firefighters across our wide brown land who put their lives at risk to keep us safe.

  10. Too bl**dy hot.  Today was 42.7 and a forecast of 44-45 on Friday with a catastrophic fire risk.

Luckily we have not had any serious fires near us but the fires impacting NSW now cover an area the size of Wales!!

Looking forward the forecast for Christmas day is a sunny 30 deg. just right!

  11. The vegan thing is growing more noisy here in Oz and the large fast food companies and big supermarkets are getting in on the act too.

Saw an advert for Hungry Jacks (Burger King) that says their vegan Whopper burger tastes just like a real Whopper burger? I don't understand why a Vegan or a Vego would want a meat free product to taste like meat. I wonder if chemical wizardry is involved.

Saw in one of the on-line newspapers a vegan ham for Christmas FFS.

  12. Thanks For the thoughts Loppy.

No luckily apart from a big fire on the Eyre Peninsular about a 6 hour drive away, South Australia has been luckily mostly fire free.

The big fires are in SE Victoria, Queensland  and by far the most affected is NSW. One area that has been particularly hard hit is the area between and behind Ulladulla and Batemans Bay in the Shoalhaven region. Particularly saddening for us as we used  to spend our holidays there when we lived in NSW. Sydney has been shrouded in dense smoke from fires to the north and west of the city. The bush will recover, people will rebuild and the loss of lives thankfully has been minimal.  We are facing 4 days of 40+ degrees next week and I am forever grateful for the volunteer firefighters that give up their time and risk their lives to protect us when these devastating fires hit.

You keep well and have a great festive season

  13. Apart from Brexit I can only see parallels with Labour losing a recent "unlosable" election here in OZ

    • A deeply unpopular leader
    • An overly complex manifesto that was not explained well
    •  An inability to "read" the electorate and being unable to respond to scare tactics
    • Having to fight the blatant lies of an increasingly extremist right wing incumbent government
    • The extreme bias of much of the media bought and paid for by the big end of town
    • No cut through message for the voters

I like many on this forum fear the next few years too. The only glimmer of light we have is that Federal governments have to face the electors every three years.

  14. I just thought I would finish by comparing how member voted in parliament and whether the electorate ditched them if they voted against their wishes in parliament.

The bold italics show the result of yesterdays' election.

Ashfield 71% voted leave, yesterday their Lab member voted for  A Conservative gain

Bassetlaw 68% voted leave, yesterday their Lab member voted against ???? A Conservative Gain

Broxtowe 53% voted leave, yesterday their TIG member voted for A Conservative Gain

Gedling 56.3% voted leave, yesterday their Lab member voted for A Conservative Gain

Mansfield 71% voted leave, yesterday their Con member voted against ???? A Conservative Hold

Newark 44.3% voted leave, their Con member voted against A Conservative Hold

Nottingham North 64% voted leave, their Lab member voted for A Labour Hold

Nottingham South 47% voted leave, their Lab member voted for ???? A Labour Hold

Nottingham East 43% voted leave, their TIG member voted for ???? A Labour Gain

Rushcliffe 42% voted leave, their Ind member voted for ???? A Conservative Gain

Sherwood 64% voted leave, their Con member voted against ???? A Conservative Hold

    It seems that voters

    1. Have little corporate memory
    2. Don't Give a toss about their views being disrespected
    3. Or more likely they just wanted the whole Brexit thing over.
