  1. It's not the sort of well you think Nonna, it's an 8"drilled cased hole down to 550 feet, the pump now sits at the 480 foot mark due to silting. there's 1 1/2hp pump and pressure tank installed, the tank is at the top of the well in the wellhouse.
  2. Those sort of things are up to the state here Phil, California requires a planning permit, even in rural areas, the driller has paperwork to complete on drilling a well. Here in Missouri, the state wants to know the strata, so the driller suppies it, otherwise the only charges are for drilling the well, installing the pump etc. They do lay down rules like the metal casing has to be installed to bed rock and sealed before the drill goes any deeper, here we have nearly 60 feet of clay before bedrock.
  3. The well driller drilled ours out to 550 foot level, it showed a flow back then of around ten gallons a minute, but now it's seasoned, I'd hazard a guess that would now be about 20 plus gallons a minute. Most of the small towns and water districts have large wells with water towers. Around here are many natural springs, they never seem to run dry, even during the driest months of the year, June, July and early August, in fact we haven't seen any appreciable rain now in weeks. Ground is hard and grass drying, trees are starting to show stress. As long as a domestic well is cased, the
  4. We are lucky, our water comes from our own well, great water percolates through the limestone beds, no pollutants like town tap water contains, so don't have to buy bottled water.
  5. One interview I went to in Australia for a colliery electricians job, feller before me had applied for an shift elec engineers job. He was dressed casually, clean jeans, dress shirt, no tie and got the position he was after. Everything I found down under was casual. I had good advice on job interviews by an engineer I used to work for during my apprenticeship, DON'T put yourself down!! Seems I did that in an interview at Beeston Boiler Company. The engineer was on the interview panel. I used what he said to get a job at my last colliery in Oz. I took over the interview, I think
  6. If the idiots survive being hit by a train, I wonder what the final cost they have to pay in damages run to, taking into account the train is not allowed to resume it's journey until cleared by the police and track maintenance crews, which can take hours sometimes.
  7. Pretty sure that the last time I wore a tie was when I got married, and that's nearly 40 years back, don't even own a suit now, summer it's a loose shirt, or tee shirt and shorts, in winter, a pair of jeans and sweater. If it's bitterly cold, and it can get dangerous here, risk of frost bite etc, I wear a very heavy jacket and scarf around my face.
  8. Loco drivers over here have at least nine hits during their careers. I cannot understand why drivers drive around the barriers on controlled crossings though.
  9. I know there are a few towns with restrictions between dusk and dawn, problem is someone is going to get killed before long though Kath, that Amtrack derailment accident the other day, but that looked like a poor crossing with limited visibility on one side. There's some good videos on youtube of 2.5 mile trains going through a loop on steep grades where the Conductor can see the end of his train. I'd hate to carry a car coupler two miles and repair a parted train in the weather we are getting now...Phewwwwww. People don't realize some trains are hauling cars with 110 tons of mi
  10. Loco drivers are required by law to sound their horn at every crossing, pedestrian and road, two long, one short when nearly at the crossing and one long over the crossings. Blame that on stupid drivers who try to beat trains and go around the barriers.
  11. Trains here now range in length from a mile to two and a half miles in length, so they now take much longer passing, rails these days are welded to reduce track damage and wheel bearing damage...But that's another story. Problem with motels is you have to put up with noise with late check in's traffic outside etc. I found when on the road that I was too tired to notice all that. Do you miss the hotel/motel Life Kath??
  12. Window units are self contained A/C units, yeah they are noisy, so are the whole house ones near the main compressor outside. Split A/C air pumps aren't they are very quiet, the wall unit has a long squirrel cage fan, whisper quiet!! As heat pumps they don't use heater elements, I research how they produce heating, it's from the compressor when the reversing valve is in heat mode. Imagine how hot the evaporator feels outside on the compressor unit when in cool mode, much like your fridge at the back or under the bottom. That's how they operate as heaters. I doubt anyone in Florida owns a
  13. I'd forgotten about your VAT Stuart, you're taxed out of existence, we just have a state sales tax, which varies from state to state. I was reading last night California, the land of fruit and nuts is going to slap a charge on people who have their own water wells, which is almost everyone in rural areas. Making it mandatory to fit a water meter to their well head. As if they don't pay for their water anyway, well and pump maintenance, electric costs for the pump etc..
  14. I think the most irritating "phrase" if you can call it that is "ya'know" when someone is trying to explain something, I often feel like saying "NO I DON'T EFFIN KNOW, or I wouldn't be listening to you"...
  15. I know what a hardie is, used them during my first year with the NCB during training. I see these mini air conditioners cost twice as much in Blighty than we can buy them for. I wonder why that is??
  16. As you're not a DIY'selfer Ben, you'll need to hire a plumber/HVAC bod to install it for you, you will need an A/C manifold and vacuum pump to set it up. Can't leave air in the system .....
  17. @ Mary 1947, Hill Street Blues is available in DVD, I have the boxed set, great show!! I also have the complete boxed set of Mash, with the added movie Mash. How about All Creatures Great and Small??? I don't know how many times I've read the James Herriot book, I still love reading his stories. Most TV shows are sold in boxed sets of DVD's.
  18. I stated "split NO duct" Over here they usually install in new houses central heat and A/C, with sheet metal ducting from the main furnace to each room. The furnace can be either gas or electric. I the same system is also mounted the evaporator for the A/C. Split no duct means the control head is mounted in the rooms you want cooled with the main compressor mounted outside on the same wall and piped through to the control head evaporator. They are also called mini heat pumps, very sophisticated, with VFC of the compressor motor and also having a reversing valve, so that in winter th
  19. Managed without it up until now due to the cost of electricity they burn up. BUT, as we are getting older the summers are getting a little oppressive. I found split no duct systems a couple of weeks back and I'm sold on them. I knew about heat pumps over twenty years back, but only the big ones used in whole house central heating/A/C systems, but pretty costly. I see people are raving about the mini split systems being efficient and cheap to run, so started researching them...WAY TO GO!! The last week has been a drain on me, with temps in the 100's F, enough is enough, I'
  20. The BBC can be self supporting, how many of the shows and documentaries are sold as DVD's per year??? Millions!!! Here in the states we have Public Broadcasting Service, (PBS), which is partly funded by the federal government and grants for Industry plus fund raising a couple of time a year. They also produce DVD's of shows etc. When I lived in Australia their ABC was paid for by grants and sake of their shows on DVD's, licensing is archaic and without it TV station survive on a budget and still make good shows. If the BBC was made to stand on it's own two feet, then maybe they woul
  21. Just a few degrees above average here at 35C and heat index of 42C pretty humid, the average for this time of years is 31C, so not much above average. Almost summer!
  22. All memories that far back are pretty vague to me now, I don't recall Dave.
  23. Another name comes to mind Mary Wilson, I can recall a few, Michael Logan, is another one Graham Shaw another one..... 70 years ago this year I started at BB Infants. There was a pair of twins Janet and John????
  24. Cajun has evolved from traditional Balfor Brothers style to Zydeco.
  25. I don't think you could call Bathurst as out in the "boonies", I used to listen to the Sydney AM stations when I lived there, but on Sunday afternoon is was nice to hear what the students enjoyed on the University radio station. They had some taste. Here's some Cajun for you..... And here's the Balfa Brothers with traditional Cajun music.
