In my old neighborhood there was a tap room that had a gully at the base of the bar with running water so the men could spit. It has been only in the last 25 years or so that the water was turned off and spitting was prohibited. I think it took so long as to keep the women out of the bar and in the "ladies area" which was another room entirely.
I can recall when I lived in Australia, in country areas, men and management frowned on women going in the public bars!! They could go in the "best side" but not the bar!
But these days women can swear with the best of them!

My dad was from Missouri, he said that people from there never believe anything you tell them, they always want proof..."show me". (I'm full of all sorts of useless trivia!!!)
They all talk with an Arkansas "twang" round here Cali, black folks are still ostrasized and called that nasty "N" word. I usually chat and say well, I've worked and known plenty of white niggers in my time and known many nice black folk too!! Usually works, as they say "Hey, your right, so and so down so and so is a white nigger"....

Jesus would ya look at those bands, I'm having a flashback. If I didn't see them live I certainly watched them perform on "The Ed Sullivan Show". Ed Sullivan was where is first saw the Stones (with Brian Jones) my girlfriend and I genuflected and blessed ourselves when the band came on ooooo my dad was so pissed, hated the whole notion of this rocknroll meantime he was sporting a pair of blue suede shoes. lol

We lived in California a few years, and just plain got fed up with the politics and cost of living!
So we ended up in my wife's home state. Fantastic down here in the Ozarks though! Great spring fed clear rivers, low cost of living, affordable housing and land, fair climate, would be perfect but for the summer humidity. One last point, VERY LOW crime rate, almost zero really!

its those adverts on the back of buses that proclaim "don't let your dog foul the pavement - think of your children" .. which can hardly be read through the belching out of black diesel fumes, which obscure the ad, making it barely unreadable!

That made me think of the workshops down Brit Gypsums Marblaegis Mine.
I was an electrician there and we used to have an old Ford Dexta tractor to run around on underground. One day the injector pump went out on it and the fitters were too bust to repair it for us. One of them told me to get a new pump out of the stores, take the old one off and fit the new one myself. He told me what to do, so I carried on.
About an hour later, I was ready to bleed the system of air and proceeded, having bled all the air out, I tightened everything up, sat in the seat and tried to start it......................................... Yeh it fired all right!!! Thick belching black smoke came out the exaust, thicker than any Nottm smog!! Within a couple of minutes all the workshops were lterally blacked out, I shut the spluttering Dexta off, with shouts from the fitting shop 'What the F are you doing over there, we can't see a friggin thing"!!!
I was peeing myself laughing, when one of the diesel fitters came into the shop to see what I was up to! Turned out, he'd told me how to time it 180 degrees out of "spill" After a couple of minutes undoing bolts, rotating the pump, tightening the bolts up again, it worked a dream with no smoke whatsoever...

That used to be common in Brit coalmines Cali, they couldn't smoke for obvious reasons so had a "chow" as they said. It used to be bought in the canteen as a 3/8inch by about 8 inch "twist".
Never could get the taste for it, tasted worse than horse shite, not that I've ever tasted horse apples!!
I used to smoke those days too, so I just chewed gum and took snuff for my "nicotine fix"
Funny enough, never had an urge for a smoke underground, but once I was getting close to the shaft at the end of a shift, the craving started!!! I'd get off the cage at pit top and run to the workshops where I'd left me smokes!

Been around forums a while now and nothings dufferent here than elsewhere
So have I, over many years...perhaps even longer than yourself....
I have no difficulty with threads developing into something else, which is certainly the norm' with forums elsewhere.
Suggest the problem here is that the percentage of 'Nottstalgia' thread openers has dwindled...almost to a trickle.
