  1. @ BK, I clean them with a circular motion  on a flat hard surface, which is essentially what you mean, slowly turning them as a work on them.

I Bought several hundred movies a few years back, many were badly scuffed and had play problems, locking up and pixilating.

All played good once cleaned and polished with toothpaste, in fact I gave up with DVD cleaners, toothpaste worked best.

  2. If you have a DVD or CD  causing problems too, polish it with toothpaste!!. Good wash in soapy water, rinse, dry off, then polish the plain side with toothpaste and paper towel, rubbing in circles, removes slight scratches and dings. Restores like new.

  3. I got heavily into Australian folk and C&W when I lived there, Wallis and Matilda, etc.

When I lived in Bathurst, NSW, the University had it's own low power FM stereo radio station run by the students. On Sunday for there was one show called Blue Grass and more, some great old real Country and Music records, some dating back to the 1920's!!  Plus Cajun Music!! NOW THERE"S some real foot stomping music from Louisiana!!

Although I don't understand French, I love Cajun music. I have several CD's with the best Cajun music there is, even modern Cayjun is good foot stomping music!

  4. Margie, there's many aspects I like about the Amish, we have a large community of Amish where I live, and growing yearly with Amish being persecuted in other states moving down here, one is they do not have churches. They call Sunday, meeting day, where the locals meet at each others houses and give blessing for their life on earth. My wife attends the local Baptist Church, no crosses, statues or other graven images.

Although the Amish do create a danger when driving on our narrow county roads, they do leave plenty of warning there's a buggy ahead of you, "horse apples" on the road!! One soon gets used to them, friendly people too!!

I live in what is known as the "Bible Belt", and believe me, there are loads of Churches in a small area and most are brimming full on Sunday and the Pastors very busy, many are full time Pastors, some hold a full time job down.

  5. PG&E, (Pacific Gas and Electric) in California have the nickname "Pacific Gas and Extortion", highest electric rates in the  US, experimented with wind in the 1980's, the turbines are still there on the way to the Bay area from Sacramento, no way could they make them pay, even in a high wind area. They gave up until big government subsidies came along.

They also experimented with water wells driven deep into the ground in the Napa area of northern Cal, failed due to the high level of mineralisation in the water.

I lived a few years in Sacramento, who at that time had their own nuclear reactor for power generation, now closed. Out electricity rates were much lower than PG&E's customers.

  6. I might add, there is an environmental down side to solar panels, there is no way to recycle them when their life is up!!! They end up being left on site at solar farms, or end up in landfills leaching toxic material into the surrounding ground. Bit like the huge blades of wind turbines, they are cut up and buried in land fills. So don't feel real good that you have helped the environment.

Lets be right, look ate the people pushing both forms of energy, multi millionaires who have "good mates" in government circles who use the taxpayer to subsidize these forms of energy. So really are we saving so much in energy costs using them??

  7. Solar cells have a 20-25 year life span on average, not taking into account large hail damage, or tree limb damage, and lightning damage and not forgetting "ole Sol" himself emitting an X6 or greater flare. Remember, solar cells are large silicon diodes, all semiconductors are prone to EMP damage, and a flare is the biggest EMP we encounter during the sunspot peaks.

  8. Once you have dried your seed, store them in seal able plastic bags and throw them in the freezer. I've grown seed that are several years old that were stored in the freezer with no problems.

Saving seed from store bought fruit and veggies is risky, as usually they are hybrids, and you never know what the crop will be like from them.

My late Gran used to always have a good veggie garden, her Toms she grew came from her own stock that she'd pollinated herself from different store bought varieties over the years before hybrids became popular. I recall in the 50's and 60's her tasty Toms!!

On freezing seed, I've never had one single failure, they always germinate.

  9. A President can have limited powers written into a Constitution, as long as the Constitution is approved by the states, as in the US.

Presidents here have very limited powers, the can be out vetoed by both houses, Senate and Representatives, Presidents are forbidden to make laws, that power is held by the lower house as noted in the Constitution, Article 1 sec 1.

If one looks at Executive Orders, they don't apply to the 50 states, or they would violate Art1 sec1. They are reserved for government employees, departments and the territories, just protectorates these days..

Essentially, the President of the US has less legal powers than QE2!

Australia has a similar governmental system to the US with parts operating like the UK.

It took many years before the US Constitution was ratified, as drafted, (I'll use the old spelling that is still used in the US.) Reason being, those in the several states could see the US turning back into a Monarchy as written, so a list of rights were added, ie The Bill of Rights, 1 through 10, and of all of them, the 10th is the most important.

As I stated, I have no time for pompous inbred royals, they serve no purpose in a modern day society.

  10. Oztalgian, I'm no lover of the monarchy, in fact when I lived in Bathurst NSW, when the Queen visited sometime in the early 80's, I was asked if I was going down to see her when she drove along one of the main streets of the City. My comments came out and my mate said to me, keep your comments to yourself in Bathurst, people love her here and you're liable to get smacked in the face...So I kept my thoughts to myself, I was a "Republican" during my time in Oz, 100% in favour of pulling Oz out of the Commonwealth and having a President.

Anyway, I will give Phil his due, he did serve in the Royal Navy during WW2 on warships in the Atlantic and was under fire many times. Mind I detested him and his ilk!!!!

  11. Brew, they are not catalytic converters, they have no expensive metals in the, they are supposed to be ceramic and have very minute holes along the length of them to catch particulate matter, not to burn off CO or unburned fuel. Takes about half an hour to regenerate, AND during the process it churns out CO, so has to be done outside. Totally different to the Catalytic converters in our petrol engined cars and trucks.

Don't get me wrong though, they too are very expensive to replace, but can be professionally cleaned.

It appears truckers over here are having a lot of problems with them, so the EPA has given them permission to have them bypassed until the problem is sorted.

Over here there's a kit to prevent the Catalytic converters being stolen, it's big business with thieves here to, more in cities than rural areas.

  12. Lizzie, I hope they are more comfortable than Land rovers, I used to drive those underground at BPB, they were the most uncomfortable vehicles I've ever driven.

I like my Chevy Silverado full sized truck, it's comfortable even with the bed full of stuff, Like driving a luxury car! Recently changed out the seat adjust switch assembly and the drivers side window switch assembly.

It has adjustable pedals too, ideal for short or very tall people.

The only thing I don't like is the auto transmission, I prefer manuals, but over this side of the pond they are as rare as hens teeth. I know of many Americans who feel the same too, BUT, the big three decided to stop making manual transmissions, so not much we can do about it.

  13. Just under $5 for a 5lb bag here, how on earth can they charge that much on the UK market??

I think I'll go into the smuggling business, I could probably make as much for high quality bread flour as the cocaine dealers do for their crap..

  14. You wouldn't recognize todays trucks Catfan, the seats cost a couple of grand each!! everything is controlled with electronics, some have drive by wire now, ie brakes and accelerator are just sensors. Anti pollution equipment, no more black as coal exhaust.  The older anti pollution equipment was a liquid you put in a tank when filling up, I don't know how it works other than spraying into the exhaust, that's been replaced now by a canister that collects particulate matter and as it gets blocked, sprays a small amount of diesel into the canister to "regenerate" the canister, fancy word for burning the particulate matter off at high temperature, much the same as what's on my fairly new Kubota tractor.
