  1. At post 38, there is a bright coloured building in the centre, it has an end bay window. That's the remaining West end of Belmont Terrace, most was demolished in late 1968/ early 1969. Does anyone know what date that photo is? or when the building was finally demolished ? Regards, terry.
  2. Thanks Cliff Ton, I managed to find those on-line video's etc, , I'm pretty old fashioned, my scrap book of days at Central fire station would seem more complete if I could glue in a cutting from the paper, bloody relatives !, we asked politely ! I expect most papers have gone in the bin by now. We had a great day in the City and at the event, Regards
  3. I was in the parade of old fire engines (on the fogrider 'bike) on Sept 11th marking the end of Central fire station. Relatives near the City said they would get a paper so I could add the cutting to my scrap book. A week later, we find they didn't bother. The post only have copies of photo's but I would like the old fashioned cutting. Anyone still got a Sept 12th paper? Regards, Terry Far away in Hull.
  4. I wonder if the wartime emergency water supply was used (if it still existed). When Dakins went up in Jan 1969, we used extra water from the underground tank in the middle of Canning circus. 500,000 gallons. We used to visit it regularly and top it up.
  5. Thanks Cliff ton, I looked at picture post, 2 of the photo's of lamp standards ! show features of the Dakins building that settle some queries on the building shape/layout. Every little bit helps.
  6. Re posts 3 and 9, from Google satellite maps this appears to be Corporation Oaks at the top of St Anns Hill. Walk up Elm Avenue and you're there. Comes up on the satellite maps easy, I suspect trees spoil the view now. I lived up Mapperley Rd for a while and was not aware of Elm Ave or Corporation Oaks which, I guess, is on top of the reservoir.
  7. Cliff Ton, are there any more photo's of Dakins on the morning after the fire ? I tried East Midlands photographic records without success. The photo you posted is a different version of the one that was in the Evening Post, so I assume there are more? I tried the Evening Post many years ago and was told they didn't keep old records. Maybe I was fobbed off .I would have been happy to pay for any copies they could provide. Would love to be able to fill a few blanks in on my records of that incident.
  8. The knitwear factory opposite Dakins was Berry and Underwood.
  9. It's strange that the plan layout in post 5 doesn't tie in with the photo after the fire.It is the correct period. The buildings on the plan are set well back from the wall. The 30's photo shows the building closer to the wall. That older photo does tie in with the fire photo, the pitched roof sheds in the yard also fit the space well.. The bigger of the two sheds was the under-cover garage. The terrace of large houses, 104 to 114 line up with Dakins in the aerial photo, but not on the plan. Very odd. Must look again at the link to maps from an earlier age. Got it, the ea
  10. Post 5 above is bang on. I had forgotton Morkel and Carnell's. Thank's Cliff Ton, I did manage to find the 1/1250 (1955-1969)on the link you gave, but I couldn't get it as clear as you did. Dakins depository would have been demolished in '69 or soon after, following the disastrous fire in January '69. Would love to see a photo of Dakins, Morkell and Carnells is so tees-ingly close !
  11. Thanks Cliff-ton. I think Dakins will be the industrial buildings opposite the Warp knitting factory. I recall there was a chicane in the road and quite wide at that point. Map scale is great, just the job. I will search the map source you quoted, the digital world normally beats me, but here goes.........
  12. Has anyone got a large scale map of Talbot street from the sixties please ? ie, 1/500 or 1/1250. Specifically the Dakins storage company site. (North side) Regards, Terry.
  13. It seems to me that Christening is not happening because , since the sixties, more and more people simply have "partners" and do not see a need to marry. If you don't bother getting married, why bother with a christening ? As for religion, as a village kid, I was expected ( and complied ) to attend church. I was a bell ringer and choir boy in the fifties, at an Anglican church. When I was subsequently required to attend confirmations, I asked what it was all about, when it was explained that you drink the blood of Christ, and eat the body of Christ, I was out of there like a shot ! Scary !
  14. All those above who have related family secrets, help yourselves to a bravery award. !
  15. Great post Mick, we will be in the grounds of Middachten Castle North East of Arnhem in the Netherlands, could be a brilliant extra to the do we're off to. Can't wait !
  16. My all time favourite film " My darling Clementine", full of brilliant direction. Early in the film one moment is when Henry Fonda goes into the hotel , the Clanton gang approach him to see who it is. As he leaves, Ike Clanton asks his name, "The names Earp,......................Wyatt Earp". Brilliant film, full of those magic moments. Hombre: Paul Newman is the half-caste humiliated in Delgardo's. When the stagecoach he is on is ambushed by the same gang, one thinks he recognizes him. He gets away with it and, when the gang ride off, he grabs a gun hidden on the coach roof and shouts "Del
  17. I went on a visit around Shippo's Brewery, late sixties. Each beer we tasted was superb. It was undrinkable in Shippo's pubs though !!. Sunk a lot of Home ales in the Grosvener up Mansfield road. It was always packed, great night but the beer always seemed watery. It was. Some draymen were flogging 50 galls to independent pubs and back-filling the tanker with water. I remember 3 people ended up arrested over it and given jail sentences. At the end of the night , the Grosvener was a riot of sound as the crowd sang the Beatles "hey jude, na, na na nanan-na........... Anyone else in those s
  18. The Midland railway centre has a JCB museum on site, I didn't dig it.............
  19. Great response, thanks. So, it was Faraday Road,on the left at the Derby Rd end I think. I went there once to try and buy 999 BTV but was told it was reserved for a museum. The chap I spoke to there was Alan Salt, ex the City fire brigade. It was when it was being serviced and "roadtested" before delivery the accident happened. The museum took it, but decided to scrap it as it was considered past restoring. I couldn't see it scrapped and it was transferred to me. That's why it is now the drop-side lorry in the photo's above. Restoration as the fire engine was simply not viable. It was suppl
  20. Raleigh Works Fire station was on Triumph road, (or was it Faraday Rd?) opposite one of the factory buildings. they had an ex City Fire Brigade Commer, 999 BTV, a 1958 vehicle bought off the Brigade in 1977. In either 1983 or 84 , it was apparently rolled down a 30 ft embankment, severely damaging it. I have tried to find out where/when/who but got nowhere. Can anyone shed any light on this ? Only asking as I once drove it to a fire (1972 or 3 ) and have actually owned it 20 years and still don't know what happened. I did try Nottingham Evening Post, but got a nil return. Fingers crossed
  21. Well, I've looked further into this, the bike, registered in Nottingham in 1948, wasn't delivered, new, to the dealers Tozer,( which I have since discovered had a London address), until 1951 ! How dodgy is that ! And it's £5,750.
  22. He must have had a brother that sold motorbikes !!
  23. Just trying to track down the ex Central fire station Norton. The VMCC records only show it was delivered to a dealers called Tozer. That name's completely new to me, anyone know about Tozers please ?
  24. Sue Pollard is a lasting memory for me. I was in "Archies" one afternoon ( The Lord Roberts), it was a locked door keep- on- serving do when the pubs shut at 2.30. Sue was stood on a table singing Jesus Christ, Superstar. Brilliant afternoon ! It must have been around 1973.
  25. Just ckecked the file on my ex Fire bike, the Botts lived in Derby, so off the radar in Nottingham, one of (if not the first) owner after it was sold into civvy life was a D. Weston, address then Papplewick pumping station. Anyone know him ? Would love a picture of the bike with its' sidecar on. That's probably a wish too far........
