  1. Excellent and so it should, sadly though we both know it wont. Hopefully I'm wrong though at least your spirometry happened, mine is now eight weeks and still waiting. Re; my brother. Thanks all for the good wishes. He has been trawling the corridors of the hospital in a walker and forbidden to walk normally despite, to all appearances, being perfectly OK. Following some determined discussions we still have no definite diagnosis though they have apologised for the lack of medicines in the pharmacy, the indecision and shipping between different wards plus the lack
  2. It's never been peaceful Ben, the internet make us all much more aware of the conflicts. The link: https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/timeline-of-20th-and-21st-century-wars list conflicts with just UK involvement. There has been a war, some big some not so big, during every year of the 20th century......... and yet we are still hypocritical enough to teach children violence is wrong and not the answer to a problem. Perhaps we should teach them resolution is dependant on the size of the stick you carry.
  3. Some good points Qz but a discussion of Keynsian v Monetrist v Command economies and the drivers in economic theory would have to be in the political thread
  4. I wish people would drop the silly alter egos they adopt on the internet...
  5. There are many criticisms levelled at the NHS but today I think we've hit the region known as 'you couldn't make it up'. My brother has been in the Royal Derby for a week with a suspected stroke. After an x-ray where they noticed a shadow; the results are now nowhere to be found. An MRI scan was requested at the time and booked for five days hence, apparently he had to stay in hospital all this time for fear of losing his place in the queue. His nurse thinks it will be tomorrow, the consultant has no idea! After several trips to what surely must
  6. Colesworth will claim reducing the wage bill helps keep prices down Banks pay corporation tax, a bank surcharge and a banking levy Which means we can fly as easily and cheaply as getting on a bus or a train. It cost me a third of the price of a train ticket to Edinburgh recently and took less than two hours from East Mids. A little melodramatic Oz but i take your point vis-a vis call centres, but it's not just the elderly that complain about them, As a schoolboy I read of a prediction that humans w
  7. I did seriously consider Canada with New Zealand as a second choice...
  8. Not being an immigrant and recognising they're not all arriving iin small boats I wouldn't like to speculate on why they come or why many of our 'own' leave. Leaving your homeland is a giant leap in the dark and must take some courage, though easier if you have relatives to help and support you. Perhaps some of our ex-pats would like to share what factors were in play when they decided to emigrate; even with a decent education, language and transferrable skills it's not an easy decision.
  9. I imagine that's quite a difficult statement to defend or verify without evidence.
  10. You can't beat a good fester and a bar of chocolate... enjoy and get well soon...
  11. Looking at the census several of the poorer areas have a greater than 45% Asian population. Are they they a cause or a symptom of urban decay? There must be many factors in play to bring this about and far too many to generalise. Think how much regeneration there could have been had they foregone a tram system I wonder how many realise that Polish is the second most common language in the city
  12. First and foremost I was not making a statement against nationalisation (for utilities I actually support it), but making the point that the idea held by some some that the ‘national assets/treasures’ belonged to the people by divine right or were somehow sacrosanct is wrong, they weren’t. The rail system began way back in the 1500s and was privately owned and developed by private enterprise into a nationwide network until it was taken over "in the national interest". Nationalising the rail system was not something the owners agreed with or had a choice about thus 'forced'.
  13. Many happy returns Mary,,,,x
  14. We had a Range Rover for the balloon, it never saw snow, we had a Mitsubishi all wheel drive, that too never saw snow. We have Mercs now that won't even get off the drive if there's more than an inch of snow. Living on a substantial hill do we need a 4x4? nope, we have a solution - stay indoors...
  15. Didn't Stanley Spencer the artist use it for his sketches?

  17. There are still plenty of DSG lathes working away Qz, many for sale and range from a few hundred to oooo that's a lot...
  18. Johnnie Ray and his music has been described as a 'depressionfest', no wonder he cried so much
  19. Manufacturers admit to planned obsolescence, if things never broke or wore or needed replacing they would soon be out of business. It was suggested many moons ago the machine tool industry built machines that were virtually bomb proof. They didn't break, never wore out or needed replacing. The consequence was they became stagnant with little development whilst l the rest of the caught world up and quickly overtook them.
  20. I didn't say it was. I'm just doubtful because there's no sign of a chain and the tyres don't look right...
  21. It certainly deserves serious consideration but I can think of several problems waiting in the wings for such a scheme
  22. Not sure if it's photoshopped, but if it is real it's going to end in tears...
