  1. Not a question I thought you would ask Catfan given your associations. Suffice to say we should draw a veil over the answer lest we open a can of worms and start a war.
  2. Boots library loaned books for threepence (old money), a week.
  3. I, like many driving an auto for the first time, hit the big brake pedal with my left foot. It's quite surprising how much force you use, even with 'normal' braking. The car was a Ford Zodiac and boy at slow speed did it stop!
  4. There is a question in the PAT (Portable Appliance Test) exam about the size of fuses to fit to plugs. The answer is either 5 or 13 amp depending on the size of the cable. Fuses protect cables not appliances as I was forever telling apprentices. There seems to be variations on NEMA plugs, and similar differences with the European SHUKO, at least we have one size fits all. There was a move some years ago to unify the design for Europe, but it had to be a design that was totally original - never got of the ground.
  5. Alls well that ends well... My days of crawling round pulling cable are long gone, Loppy long gone
  6. My understanding is no one knows loppy. It may be a circuit that was never completed and doesn't connect in the consumer unit or it may be some clown disconnected an appliance and just left it. To me giving advice to someone you don't know about something you haven't seen and has the potential to kill is foolish in the extreme. Standing in a coroners court and saying 'that's not what I meant' is not a lot of good. To answer your question mate:- Imperial Cable Size Metric Cable Equivalent 1/.044 1.0 mm² 3/.029 1.5 mm² 3/.036 ? 7/.029 2.5 mm² 7/.036 4
  7. I'm not a great fan of these, I said earlier they will not prove dead. You sound like you have some knowledge so reluctantly I say do not give ambiguous instructions to someone clearly not trained. You have not proved dead, you cannot say to an untrained person 'test and verify'. You have no idea if the cable is damaged somewhere so will your test include an insulation test, continuity test or a polarity check? You have no idea of the instruments or tools he has available. Quoting the regs tells him nothing...
  8. I would fit a 13A socket if checks out as live with a mains tester Under part P regulations you are allowed to replace like for like, but... How do you know the neutral is connected, how do you know there is earth continuity? You cannot 'assume' the reason for missing faceplate or socket. Nor has RCD protection been mentioned. If you're testing with a multi-meter and there is a broken neutral it will read as dead, touch and you may well be! The popular 'sticks' that light on detecting a live cable only prove a cable live. They do NOT prove a circuit is dead! It
  9. Mary has a little lamb It had a sooty foot and everywhere that Mary went His sootyfootheput
  10. Here it's not closures that are killing the High St it's the opening of big stores out of town.
  11. Having once been to a Yodel depot it wouldn't surprise if it's not been kicked into a corner and forgotten. The one I went to was a complete and utter mess, total chaos.
  12. Does maintain his innocence or just refuses to say where she is?
  13. Could be... Edit: just looked at some pics, going with the Daimler
  14. Not a good memory RR but you have a wealth of better ones about him, try to think on those.
  15. I never had him down as a complete idiot, shows how much I know.
  16. Totally disagree. As for the financially supported bit they cost each of us a couple of quid a YEAR … Bargain! As Stuart.C has asked, what do you replace them with? Baron Boris and his cronies or Corbyn & Co. both would see us in penury, for different reasons, but still broke.
  17. <gulp> wasn't he the 'hanging judge?.
  18. I'm beginning to worry, in my youth I have been known to wolf whistle on more than one occasion ...
  19. This is one of the few occasions when I can offer condolences and actually understand. Losing a pet is, as you say, devastating and the reason I will never have another. You have my heartfelt sympathies SG.
  20. SIL is quite bright really and earns around £40k but the only explanation he can come up with is 'me army mates started it and I think it looks cool', go figure.
  21. It's an S350 Bluetec. When I bought it I virtually told the salesman he was telling porkies about the fuel economy...……. sorry mate
  22. There are, or used to be, ideas that automatics are slow and thirsty to drive. Below is a picture of my dash. This is on the M1 with myself and a passenger plus two heavy suitcases. The car weighs a tad over two tonnes and is a three litre turbo diesel. (photo taken by passenger). The second picture shows the same journey on the way back sans passenger and luggage. Picture taken in services.
  23. Under the steering wheel are two 'paddles', one each side. You flick them up towards you, ( not both together!) one changes gears up, the other ...
  24. I wonder about the mentality of some with tattoos of guns, knives, skulls, stabbed hearts etc. Why so dramatic and aggressive, what were they thinking, what message do they want to convey? Son in law has what are termed 'full sleeves' and is slowly covering his hands. He is a complete fashion victim with all the latest trends and designer gear so not sure how much celebrities influence him.
