  1. Tend to disagree. Unmarked cars will certainly catch a few bad drivers, but a marked police car will have a bigger effect. Who here doesn't check their speed and slow down when they see one? So one unmarked car will catch a few, a conspicuous car will prevent many more from transgressing.
  2. That's not too far away Mary I'll give it a go at the weekend, thanks
  3. very good Margie please don't do it again
  4. Far be it from me to say so but I rather think there may be a terminological inexactitude there Compo
  5. I have in the past been tempted to point out the odd grammatical error, then I re read some of my own posts with missed words, repeated sentences, poor syntax and cringe...

  7. A lot has changed in the last ten years Ayeup never mind 50! I don't go to town much but there's always something to surprise me when I do. (Some of those guys with dashcams aren't exactly perfect either)
  8. Woohoo I've read my mail and it says I won the Lottery 'Set For Life' game. So now I'm set for life, great! I'm a bit worried though, it's only £5 - do they know something I don't?
  9. We sang matter spatter custard and a dead dogs eye..... We also sang Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water Jill came down with half a crown, but not for fetching water... Mam said 'stop that it's not nice' but never said why...
  10. Perhaps SG you need my Grandma's remedy (for pretty everything, coughs, colds and runny noses), goose grease and brown paper on the chest.
  11. The web site only has Android and Apple apps...?
  12. Never heard of it, I'll look into it later today... Edit: Seems to be for smartphones only...
  13. Why am I not surprised! I'd be flat on my back for a week!
  14. That's how it was made when I worked in a factory. The teapot was industrial sized and almost a full pint of milk was added to the tea.
  15. When our pets needed to take tablets we used two spoons to crush them and sprinkle the powder on their food. Surprisingly the cats never made a fuss but Jack (the Jack Russell) was suspicious and gave the contents of his dish a thorough sniffing but ate it eventually. I posted this ages ago but can't find it now:- How to give a cat a pill. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. A
  16. They were Fuller 13 or 15 speed boxes running through a 4 range splitter. Engines were Detroits and they were Scammell Contractors not Antars, my mistake..
  17. My sister worked in the NAAFI offices.
  18. Heanor Haulage.a few years ago bought several Scammell Antar chassis from Australia, fitted them with a Volvo F88 cab, massive engines and gear boxes with up to 54 gears. They used them as heavy haulage moving plant machines.
  19. oldphil... There is an IAM group that meets at Riverside retail park, you can book a free taster session here: https://www.iamroadsmart.com/campaign-pages/end-customer-campaigns/drivefree. The RoSPA group meet at Brinsley. They offer a free assessment drive for both cars and motorcycles, with no obligation. http://www.nottinghamforesters.co.uk/Index.html
  20. Quite a few do disagree but it's entirely voluntary and as we have said no pass or fail. Go on you I dare you, you know you want to... I studied the New Testament at school - doesn't make me a believer.
  21. And much more likely is pulling up too close to an inexperienced driver and they select the wrong gear and jump back, or stall. It gives you time to stop and if necessary room to manoeuvre round them without having to reverse towards the car behind you.
  22. RoSPA and the IAM will do a free assessment for anyone and not just 'old gits'. Using your car they will sit with you whilst you drive on a mix of road types and conditions, rural, urban, dual carriage way etc. It takes 45 mins to an hour after which they will sit with you, have a coffee or tea and go over their assessment. As Col says there is no pass or fail and well worth doing.
  23. Knowing now that speedometers under read and you were 'done' for 85, what did your speedo indicate?
