  1. Having worked in Supermarket maintenance for 25 of my 51 working years, I can confirm that refrigeration costs a massive amount to run as it's on 24 / 7 / 365 (6).

I finished work (used to be called retiring) 5 years ago before the massive energy cost increases, but even for the 10 years or so before that, most major supermarkets were spending millions per year on energy savings and seeing a return.
And all but smaller High St stores have 11kv supplies, typically 1000 / 1200kva.

I can also confirm that as a commercial user supermarkets pay a far higher price per unit than domestic customers.

  2. I would imagine the Wilko Administrators have got / will put To Let signs on all the empty shops.

They have to dispose of all assets and discharge liabilities so until someone else has actually signed a transfer for the lease then that shop lease remains a liability.

Given the uncertainty of bids for the shops / leases / brand name in the early stages and probably from past experience, I doubt the Administrators are going to assume that all the companies that have expressed interest are actually going to complete on everything.

When they look in detail they may find issues with the lease / building location etc and back out.

B&M are still quoted as saying "Up to 51", so that might only be 2, or 10 or none.

  3. The final Wilkos close on October 8th, that includes Arnold and Hucknall.

Parliament St and Bulwell close on the 5th October.

Poundland are having the leases on Beeston Kimberley and a few more remote from Nottingham, but no local ones.

B & M have said they won't announce their "up to 51" until shareholders have been informed in November.

  4. Lizzie,

My near neighbour, across the road, is Chinese.

He came to Nottingham Uni 30 years ago and stayed.

His Mother came over to visit for the first time a few years ago (pre Covid) and after she'd been around the City for the first time on her own while he was at work, she came back and said,, Where have  all the locals gone.
He laughed and so did I when he told me.

I recall the Coop on Southchurch drive and the upstairs being referred to as

    ''Scoop''..........can't remember why

Scoop was Coop's bargain / budget brand/ reduction area, I think.
I'm sure there was one in Arnold upstairs.

Just found this with a picture of Hyson Green Scoop

The Nottingham Co-operative Society Scoop Shop. There were various -Scoop Shops' around the greater Nottingham area, usually occupying the sites of former co-op supermarkets. The chain was still part of the Co-operative Society and sold surplus catalogue clothes and item cheaply.

  7. B&M have said that of the "Up to 51 stores" they have offered £13m for, the majority will be rebranded B&M and Wilko staff will not automatically be transferred.

Presumably if B&M get Bulwell they'll just move everyone over from  their existing shop across the road and maybe take on a few extra staff, who may or may not be ex Wilko.

  8. The basics are covered in the first few minutes of the video linked below, (he covers a lot of interesting legal issues on other videos) but Reasonable grounds is the only reason needed.

In the case of Jill's friend, I'm not sure that a report from another shopper is good enough reason.

For those who don't want to watch the video, basically if the store have reasonable grounds and you refuse to allow a search, you must agree before they can, then they can detain you and call the Police, but in that circumstance only the Police can search your bag against your will.

  9. Pandemics / natural / unnatural disasters are a loose loose for any Government as Labour will find out when in power.

Exactly the same critisims will come up whoever is in Government,

    Wasn't prepared,

    Acted too slowly,

    Acted too quickly,

    Ignored Expert advise,
Took advise from the wrong Experts,

    Locked down too late,

    Locked down too early,

    Should not have locked down,

Spent too much money, a small proportion of which ended up with known persons instead of some of the miilions of scammers and con merchants around the World who were attempting to sell non existant PPE, ventilators etc.

    Wasted too much money,

And just to note, I voted Conservative last time but will be voting Labour as Conservatives have been in too long,

Just as I will continue to vote Conservative in the City elections as Labour have been in control too long.

  10. Speculation will continue on this,

    Was he in the plane?

Was the person in the plane a look-a-like?

Bodies have been found and taken to a morgue, was Prigozhin already in the morgue dead and awaiting a body switch?

Is he sat on a tropical beach counting the billions of $ he has and looking forward to the billions due to him in the future?

Found this on a U-tube news item,

Apparently the plane "lost" a wing.

  11. I'd say later than 1960's Ben.
Top right of the picture is a sign that says Paved Zone, they weren't around in the 60's, but would make it after Bulwell Market place was paved, any takers on when ?

Billy Dainty was in Panto at the Theatre Royal in December 1981, can't see he was there in earlier years in their archive.

Chaddys hardware is around the back of that shop now, no doubt they'll get a boost in hardware trade when Wilko finally close.
And the Golden Dragon is still the Golden Dragon.

  12. I've had around 7 flu jabs in total, none with any after effects.

I've had 4 Coronavirus jabs, 2 makes, the only after effect with a couple of them was a slightly stiff arm, I've not been invited this year, yet, but will go if I am.

I had the Shingles jab the other week, no after effects.

I'm the only person I know that has, to best of my knowledge not had Coronavirus or any symptoms of.

I don't believe I've ever had the real flu, only at worse very bad colds.

Now if you want to talk about toes, feet, ankles, knees, shoulders and back joint issues, that's a different very long story.
