  1. And a Zigmund Bednarski who died in 1997, also from Little Falls. i would imagine that with a couple of phone calls to Bednarskis living in that part of upstate NY you would be able to solve the puzzle.
  2. There is an obituary listing for a Zigmunt Bednarski of Little Falls, NY dated 1971. Just google for the link on ancestry.com
  3. We've all said it in our time but this morning I saw something I thought I'd never see the day. It was outside the Vic' Centre: a torso on a skateboard pushing himself along Parliament Street. He was quite obviously from the Middle East (or similar) and I wonder what other sights we shall all have to become accustomed to over the next few years.
  4. NUJ, NGA, NATSOPA, SLADE, SOGAT, and probably a few more of the alphabet soup of trade unions in the newspaper industry that I have forgotten, were vehement in their opposition to the Evening Post's plans to replace hot metal with new technology. 40 years on and I guess we know who was right.
  5. From memory, I think there was an issue with the bendy buses' transmission that didn't suit the hilly sections of the Arnold route. Which is why they ended up on the NTU shuttle to Clifton.
  6. Peter Taylor's role in their success at The Rams and subsequently at Forest has never been properly recognized. I get quite annoyed when I hear him described as Brian Clough's assistant. Cloughie was the media's darling but Taylor was the man who spotted the talent in youngsters or saw the potential in apparent write-offs.
  7. I tune into the local news most days and get the impression that they are improving with experience. But I do wish Francis Finn would remember that she is on tv, not radio, and sort out her make-up and hair.
  8. No - Not South Sherwood Street - south side of the Old Market Square - other side of the road from the West Bridgford buses. Hello Stephen, I was referring to the location of the photo.
  9. I certainly don't recall the Goose Fair buses running from South Sherwood St and, I have to say, that I consider it highly unlikely that you would want (potentially) a long queue of buses parked on the main road through the centre of town
  10. I always remembered the Goose Fair specials picking up on Market Street and then non-stop to The Forest.
  11. I was in town this afternoon and witnessed the nauseating site of one of Nottingham's parking attendants issuing tickets to a couple of taxis that were picking-up a party of very elderly ladies who had been visiting the Salvation Army hall on KIng Edward Street. When I asked why he wasn't giving the customary grace period to allow for loading he grunted something about his manager told him no to. I do hope the chap or his "manager" never has to rely on the services of the Sally Army.
  12. I think the adjective shoe-horned is the most appropriate for the clock's new location. A quite cheapskate setting for an installation that was intended to be viewed and enjoyed from above as much as from below.
  13. Some fine examples of "TV geography" in this programme. You know the sort of thing: the presenter strolls out of the castle gate house which brings you to Green's Mill. Just round the corner she catches tram in front of the Theatre Royal and gets off at Wollaton Park - which is a stone's throw from the Lace Market. It's true: I saw it on the telly!
  14. Call me an old grumpy guts, but if I read yet another newspaper article about Nottingham's accent and vernacular; rehashing what has been said countless times before; I promise I shall not be responsible for the consequences.
  15. Ten and a half hours to cover 200 miles from Merthyr to Lincoln !!! I bet the stage coach was almost as quick.
  16. In the morning Notts TV have a "Live Feed" from the webcam. Only, today, I really did not want to witness a live feed when mum and the chicks dismembered a pigeon while I tried to down my tea and toast.
  17. King John's Chambers heyday was in the 1980s. The offices and shops were known as Sharespace - owned by local architect Andrew James who was also involved in another Sharespace on Stoney Steet and the Lace Centre on High Pavement. Fingers and pies come to mind along with George Akin and Ken Grundy!
  18. Come on somebody! Where was this photo taken? It looks like Bestwood Park area.
  19. Are there any of our more senior correspondents who remember the City Police sports day which was held at their Mapperley Park ground? I remember being taken by my parents sometime in the middle 60s and wondered if anyone else has recollections.
  20. in the early 70s I seem to recall that Rosetta Coaches had even cruddier charabancs than Camm's. But they were very cheap so our school tended to use them, unless you drew the short straw and found yourself bouncing around in the back of the 4 tonner.
  21. The Wigan "flatback" sounds like 75 RTO which was an old Fleetline that was rebodied (along with three others) with a modified version of the Nottingham standard design after a big fire at the Parliament St depot. The rebuild was carried out by Northern Counties - a Wigan-based company.
  22. A four years old - C reg - bus and it looks knackered. Just goes to show that not everything was better in the good old days.
  23. They are springing up like mushrooms after a downpour. What am I talking about? The hundreds of 20 and 30mph signs the highways department has decided to plaster all over Nottingham's sideroads. I don't know how much it has cost but I would have thought that the money would be much better spent on enforcement (where speeding is an issue) rather than having restrictions on roads that have not seen a police car in years and, given the planned cuts, are even more unlikely to see one in the future.
  24. carlton library (the one behind the fire station) has quite a bit of local history material , so that wpul be a good place to start.
  25. The only part of Nottingham that (to me) looks a bit like the first photo is Alpine Street.
