  1. Nottinghamshire Family History Society may be able to help. They have data bases on Memorial Inscriptions for the General Cemetery and the Church (Rock) Cemetery - and others. They are at the Galleries of Justice on Thursdays and Fridays 10.15am to 12.30pm.
  2. Dad told me of a game they played as kids. Put a small log/branch on the ground with another going across at right angles (bit like a see-saw). Put a stone on the downward end, stamp on the upper one, and then whack the stone with another stick as it came down. We tried it with my Scouts a few years back but had to stop as there were too many mishaps! (Elf and safety and all that), At Scouts we also played glow stick throwing. Tie a glow stick (crack light/snap light) on a bit of string. Whirr it round (like a big wheel) and then let go - see which went highest. Had to be careful wh
  3. Perhaps we should write more down. Folks can read it when they want - even if it is 20, 30, 40 or even 100 years from now.
  4. It was like a very fine Aero with a sort of smashed up Kit-kat topping with a lovely coffee flavour - all covered in milk chocolate. I think it had a gold wrapper. It was my favourite, but it disappeared after a couple of years never to be seen again. Maybe I was the only one in the world to like it!
  5. Can anyone remember a chocolate bar called "Coffee Crisp"? I'm sure I haven't made them up!
  6. What an interesting map. I guess the footpath (dotted line) going all the way from Cavo to Foxhill is Russia path. Where it says Robin Hodd Allotment Gardens seem to be a bit far up - more like the Alps. There is the path with the big loop loop to the right which I think is where I went with dad. However, one must admit the old grey cells are betting a bit befuddled now days!
  7. One of my favourite pastimes when I was a little girl (in the 50s) was going up the allotments with my dad. If he was in a good mood he would let me ride in his wheelbarrow - he must have been fit to push me up the long path. Our house on Cavendish Road backed onto the allotments, but we always went down the road and through the big gate. Dad had two plots - one along the main path on the left and the other right up to the end of the circular path. On the way he would lift me up to look at the baby birds in their nests, but I was told I must never touch them or go near them if I could see
  8. Comerie - her husband is David. He has got sisters but I can't remember their names.
  9. Georges Lane is supposed to be haunted. The ghost of a man is seen through the rear view mirror sitting on the back seat. Maybe he got in and scared the driver.
  10. Rob had a brother (Mick) and a sister (Carol - married name Comerie). His dad was Cyril Thomas and his mum Evelyn (nee Hallam). Cyril had a brother Sid and a sister Lucy (married name Moseby). His father (Rob's grandad) was Robert William Shelton - I believe he was born in Carlton, but can't be certain.
  11. I have just joined the Fb group. I am on a couple of the photos. Tried tagging myself on one, but, of course, it gave my married name not my maiden name.
  12. I get really annoyed when someone answers a question with "So........" Also "at this moment in time"....do you ever get a moment in anything else. Unless you are Dr Who and have a "wibbley wobbley timey whime"!
  13. Film moment (think it starred Mary Feldman) - couple on the beach having sex. She says "Why are you crying? Emotion?" He replies "No. Sand"
  14. I can remember being very please with a very short haircut......... until someone started calling me "Crewcut Bill" ...... that really hurt. (I was only about 11)
  15. Fave film clip. Lord of the Rings ; Fellowship of the Ring. When Boromir (played by Sean Bean) cuts himself on the broken blade of Narsil and says ..... "still sharp"
  16. St Paul's Carlton and Carlton Board School were two different schools. Board School (later known as Carlton Central) was on Burton Road - St Paul's was on Carlton Hill.
  17. Can't help wondering which were/are nickname and which are just plain bullying.....
  18. Hubby worked at the General from 1964 until it closed and then he was transfered to QMC where he stayed until his death in 2006. He started as an apprentice chef and did several learning stints at various other hospitals including Children's and Saxondale. When he died he was the Quality Assurance and Training Manager for the Catering Department (which was sold off to Batemans and then Compass.
  19. I remember that trip to the Eagle! And no, it wasn't me who nicked the carpet!
  20. Hubby and I were bikers back in the 60/70s. He started on a 98cc Garelli, then a BSA 650 A7 (it was a 500 but a great friend who was a mechanical genius but a 650 head on it), then a BSA M20, and finally a 750 Honda which he kept until well into the 90s. I was only ever on pillion - although I was on the back of the M when I was in labour with my son! Spent many happy weekends down at the White Hart, Lenton. Knew Friar, Animal, Titch, Taff, Billy Gilbert (who they used to call Queen of the Boulevard - he seemed too small for his bike, but was always the fastest down University Boulevard an
  21. Spent many a happy hour in the White Post Cafe. It was the Robin Hood Cafe really, but we always Knew it as White Post Cafe. We even went there in a car when I had my son. He was banned from playing on the machines cos he kept winning! When did it become Winner City? I have been there a couple of times too.
