  1. This was definitely in '69 or '70 because we only used the Seeley Annexe for one year because then we moved into the old Forest Fields Grammar School (and so presumably no longer needed to use the Seeley Annexe.) I was at Claremont from '69 to '74 so the incident you describe pre-dates this one by years.
  2. Reading all of these memories has reminded me of a story my friend Steve Newbold told me. It concerns Mr Naylor the science/chemistry teacher. It may or may not have happened at the Seeley annex. Apparently Mr Naylor was demonstrating the differing levels of reactivity of the alkali metals and was using a pneumatic trough (a big glass bowl) filled with water. You drop a piece of an alkali metal into water and the reaction gets increasingly lively depending on which alkali metal you use. Presumably he started with Lithium, then Sodium and then, when he got to Potassium, apparently he put a sl
  3. Brillo, your post with details of all the teachers was excellent - you seem to know so much more about them then I ever did. I'm still in contact with Dave Croucher and Steve Newbold. I was at Claremont from '69 to '74 - if I remember correctly were you and Dave one year later than me? Zab - are you any relation to Ben Zabulis by any chance? - he was in my class during my time at Claremont. I made contact with him a few years ago when there was a school reunion at Llyods Bar in Hockley in 2003 ish. He is or was working somewhere exotic in Asia I think. All
  4. Thanks very much for this - I shall make contact with them and see how long it will be before digital copies are available. The reason I ask is I live very close to Tollerton Airport and I want to know if there are mine workings under my property. With regard to what you said about Cotgrave's Deep Hard seam, do you mean they could have joined up with Clifton's 41 face had they continued a further 300yds? Would this have been a bad thing? Would they have actively avoided such a join-up happening for safety/practical reasons?
  5. Can anyone point me in the right direction (preferably an online resource) to find maps showing the Clifton pit workings superimposed on a normal map. In the Tollerton aerodrome thread someone posted that the Clifton pit 41 face/workings went under Tollerton aerodrome. I'd like to see a map showing the area around and including the aerodrome with what pit workings lie underneath (be it from Clifton pit or other pit workings). Can anyone help?
  6. Is this Brian's Jet Provost that's been re-painted or a different one? I wonder if flights are available?
  7. It's now the Charde Oriental (a chinese restaurant) and I'm afraid the food hygiene scores are very poor at the moment. I remember many years ago my friend raving about the place - particularly the large amount of veg you used to be given with your meal.
  8. I never realised Jubblys were a drink! - I only knew them as a frozen 'lolly'. Nice to see the sucker stick skimmers as well.
  9. With Bonfire night approaching I remember something else I discovered as a kid with my bike. I bought a pack of bangers, took my bike onto the Forest, laid it on its side, removed the handlebar grip from the end of the bar, lit a banger, popped the banger into the handlebar and then quickly pushed the handlebar grip back on. It went off with a hell of a bang and shot the grip high into the air! Great fun if a little risky.
  10. Re-reading this thread I spotted this comment. I used to do that - I think I held it in place with a clothes peg. I also used to 'plait' several sucker sticks together to make a square flat frisbee type of skimmer. Also, do you remember 'Jublys'? They were a frozen 'tetrahedron style' ice lolly. When we'd finished the lolly we'd either put empty packs on our feet a la swimming fins and pretend we were frogmen OR, stamp on the open end to make a loud bang!! Happy days - memories I thought I'd lost that now have come back.
  11. St Simons Hall - that brings back some memories! At Stanley for lunch we were marched down 2 by 2 to St Simons hall for lunch. I can still recall the awful smell of pre-cooked mashed potato served from those bulk aluminium cans. I can also remember for some bizarre reason the bright colours of the aluminium anodised water jugs on the tables and the chunky glasses we were given to drink from. I've just remembered another shop - the one on the corner of Burford Road and Berridge Road - the upper part of Burford Road. I think it was a general grocery store. I think it was owned/run by
  12. I had completely forgotten there was a chip shop there. However, now you've mentioned it I do remember going there and queuing for chips. If I remember correctly didn't it become a carpet shop after being a chippy? I had completely forgotten about it and Clarkes the electricians diagonally opposite the chippy until you nudged my memory.
  13. I don't remember taking part in it but Toni does - she says she was Godess Diana. Ian, I've just read some of your other posts where you mention your sister Marion so I know exactly who you are. Toni used to buy me a Rupert annual every year for Christmas but I've stopped adding to the collection - space. I didn't realise you lived on Russell Road. I was on Berridge Road - between Sturton Street and Harcourt Road. Did you live on the upper part of Russell Road near the Catholic School or the lower part that goes down to Gregory Boulevard? I had one mate who lived on Harcourt Road (
  14. Ian C? R&D? Rupert Books? My nickname does indeed come from those days - first five of the surname, first three of the Christian name. I use it a lot on different forums. Yes I'm retired now. I left in 1997. I retired in 2006 at the ripe old age of 48! No Kids, no mortgage, two Mars salaries.
  15. I'd completely forgotten about that chippy. It was opposite Gilbert's and diagonally opposite the electricians (Clarkes?) if I recall - is that correct? Regarding Brian and Bruce - I chatted mostly with Bruce. I know Brian's wife looked after the refreshments area and she had a sharp tongue but she never managed to intimidate me. If I remember correctly didn't Brian end up working for the firearms supply guy that had a place in Hucknall who then moved to the NSC premises when their business folded. I think he employed Brian to deactivate weapons for people who decided to keep them. The fi
