  1. I think it was MISS King and she was formidable lady- I got the ruler on the back of the thigh most days I seem to remember- she also taught my Dad at Westdale Lane when she was obviously just starting out Mr Teesdale was there in the late '50s
  2. Hi apologies for the delay- the two houses are Numbers 69 and 71- about halfway between Bennet and Whitingham Rd
  3. Hi SteveB.... The Tea Gardens were a family concern headed up by my grandmother- Mabel Gilbert along with various family members - my grandfather Cyril was the baker; and my mum served in the shop. When Mabel died in 1955 (?) the concern was sold off- I cant remember the details as I was only about 4 !. They lived in the big house opposite the shop -33 Plains Road which was sold along with the shop;bakery and tea gardens. The Haywood Road connection was that 2 houses were built on the old tennis courts for my parents and my mums sister and her husband.
  4. Thanks Cliff Ton- I'll get in touch- The Gilbert family history is very convoluted and difficult to trace as it seems they changed their name from Osman sometime in the 1910's- presumably they were concerned about the Germanic sound of it; and there is also a link to a family in Grantham by the name of Roberts (!!!) but we won't talk about that !
  5. Just had a delve back through som old pix This one is outside the shop- my mum is on the right- I'm not sure who the others are- although I suspect the old guy is Grandad Gilbert
  6. Yeah Paradiddle... wouldn't happen today !.. just had another flashback.... I seem to remember playing on saturdays against other schools...like ArnoVale and Westdale lane?
  7. Outside toilet block with cricket stumps painted on the wall I seem to remember.... we went to school with football kit on under normal clothes and "changed" in the cloakroom before walking down to Digby.....Teachers..... Mr Teesdale....Mrs Williamson.....Miss King (!!!)
  8. Anybody out there go to Plains Road Primary School 1955-60 ?

  11. Hi I've just come across this site and I may be able to add a few bits of info; The tea rooms; shop and bakery were run by my mothers family; My grandfather- Cyril Faulkner was the baker; Grandmother Mabel (nee Gilbert) really ran the show I think- she died in 1954-55 (ish)- cant remember -I was only 4. and the concern was sold shortly after; demolished and a Co-op "supermarket" built on the site . The 3 sisters; Rene, Joyce (my mum) and Marjorie were all involved in the business. Cyril and Mabel lived at 33 Plains road- opposite the shop/bakery/tea-gardens. Uncle Jack (a cousin) lived on
