  2. ‘Ramper’ The main road ( A60) from the outskirts of Nottingham to Mansfield is known locally as the ‘Ramper’. Originally a straight stretch of that road, just through a section called Harlow Wood with a long dip and a rise out at either end . Over time Ramper came to mean the whole route, Nottingham out to Mansfield. In Harlow Wood is a spot named Ramper Covert. Covert a much older useage, meaning a thicket with small trees and bushes where animals could hide from huntsmen or other animals. Ramper has an older lineage . Rampen in middle english( post Norman conquest, 106
  3. T E Lawrence, killed on his Brough Superior , is known by most. He was due to collect a new model, much correspondence between him and George Brough about it exists. After his death GB sold the Brough that Lawrence was going to take. Here is the only known photo of it. Last heard of in Bedford in the 1960s .It was a 'Two of Evrything' 8/75 SS100 JAP engined machine. Two carbs, two magnetos, two oil pumps.
  4. I know William was an agent for BSA cycle fittings in 1902/3, both at Vernon Road, also at 38 Mount Street in the city centre, this from trade directories.
  5. Thanks Ian,the Willam Brough pic is one I put on the internet.I have just finished an exhaustive history of him and his products. The book is a limited edition private printing through the Brough Superior Motorcycle Club . Williams 'Giant' safety bicycle is one of the last loose ends.
  6. GUYS I'm talking 1902 NOT now, please read the first post before you jump in
  7. William Edward Brough made bicycles at his Vernon Road works, before he started on motorcycles in 1902.He was George Broughs father. The bicycle was marketed under the brand name 'Giant'. This came about because his brother Albert was the tallest man in England at 7 foot seven inches,& was known as the Nottingham Giant in the various travelling shows he appeared in .Has anyone got a Giant bicycle hiding anywhere I would like a photo if one exists.
