  1. The Nottingham I remember from before I moved away was a vibrant place, weekends were spent at pubs and them nightclubs. It could get a bit rowdy when pubs/nightclubs turned out with the occasional fist fight but mostly it was good natured.
Saturday afternoon was for going round the shops (being seen), Birdcage, Chelsea Girl and C&A ( where you could get a skirt for 50p at one point). Coffee at the Kardoma (is that how you spell it) them home to get ready for the evening. I can remember many late Saturday nights in the Market Square where someone usually ended up in one of the fountains, catching the last bus (sometimes with singing), the endless queue round the square for a taxi or even walking home.
Don’t go into Nottingham much now, find it a bit depressing to be honest. It seems rundown, a lot of homeless sleepers and don’t get me started about the soulless Market Square. Not the City it once was.

I moved back to the area where I grew up, I’m near one of the houses my mum and dad lived in with us all. Although it is possibly classed as a “rough” area where I am is quiet, friendly neighbours but looks a bit rundown and untidy, possibly like a lot of other estates at the moment. Don’t know what it will be like once the cutbacks are implemented by the Council it doesn’t look like they do much anyway, except mess up Beechdale Road with a cycle lane changing a dual carriageway into a 2 lane road which it seems no one wanted and everyone is complaining about.

Still I am doing one or two improvements to my house this year and then hope to sell next year, it is a bit too big for me now so am hoping to downsize.

  2. I think I would have been the same about that to be honest nonnaB. I would never dream of doing something like that, pets are family you are a visitor.
I must admit I always take notice when any of my dogs have not taken to someone, makes me wonder what is wrong with them (the person not the dog) and it tends to make me wary of them.
Had a quick look at the offending lump today, just feels the same, it is hard to see because of where it is and he does have very hairy feet (he has hairy ear canals as well apparently so the vets say which can make him prone to ear infections).

When he goes to the Peak District he also goes to Matlock. He has a route round the shops. First of all the cafe for toast, sometimes jam, always butter and gravy bones, then the arcade with loads of stalls, gets gravy bones and fuss off 3 stallholders, then the “hat” shop where, you guessed it, fuss and gravy bones. It really doesn’t help the diet he is supposed to be on as he is slightly overweight. There is also one of the cars for kids that you put money in to make it go which he likes to sit in for a bit, we have no idea why but he makes a beeline to it. He then snoozes on the ride back, gets home and waits to see if he is going to get fed which he doesn’t (he misses a meal due to all the treats) and then settles down for an afternoon nap either under the heated throw or under his blanket. Think I will come back as a dog in our family!

  3. I have had to take Jj to the vets. We noticed he was licking his paw and we discovered a lump on the underside of his paw at the side of the large pad on his hind leg. A really awkward place to see not helped by the fact that he doesn’t like his paws touched, never has since he was a puppy.
Vet had a look and decided to have him in to have a proper look and take a biopsy to send to the lab. This was done, vet said it appeared to be a lump of hard skin, didn’t bleed when it was cut into and there wasn’t anything stuck in his foot and biopsy was sent off.
Went back to get results and was told the sample wasnt big enough for the lab to do anything (didn’t quite understand this as it was the main reason he had gone in) so we still didn’t really know what it was. We had been given some cream previously to see if it would make the lump shrink, it hadn’t got any bigger but was only slightly smaller and wasn’t bothering him at this point unless we had a look at it/put the cream on. So we have decided to keep an eye on it for a while, obviously if it grows or changes in any way we will be going back. Because of where it is it will make healing a bit more prolonged than normal so at the moment this seems the best option.

I was going to do my insurance claim (the bill was an eye watering £722 by this time) and suddenly wondered what had happened to the £200 I paid to the lab for work that wasn’t done. I didn’t want to put in an insurance claim for this if I was going to get it back. Rang the vet and explained the situation and was told you will get it back from the insurance. Explained again that the work at the lab wasn’t done and would this money be credited back to the vet (why should they have it when it is my money plus it was their mistake not taking a proper biopsy) and was told same again rather abruptly, but an email would be sent to senior management about it.
I must say I have found this very unsatisfactory, the senior vet we saw wasn’t much help really, we needed her advice on what she thought was the best thing to do, after all she is the vet not us, but just kept giving us loads of options to choose from and was going round in circles.
Anyway I have put in an insurance claim which the vet held up for a couple of days as when the insurance claim reached them from Petplan they have to send it off to a centralised department for all 12 branches. This resulted in Petplan having to chase them for the details for a second time, email me and I had to ring them about it. Finally got the confirmation from Petplan they have paid the claim, can’t fault them paid out straight away after finally getting the information from the vet.

Jj is fine, went on a 12 mile hike in the Peaks on saturday with no ill effects, fingers crossed it will star this way.

  4. I have a question. What are the Commissioners coming in to sort the Council budget out going to do precisely? Also why are they costing £1,500 and 2 at just over £1000 a day? Seems a bit excessive when the Council is already bankrupt. I await to be enlightened.

  5. I have a medium sized Tefal air fryer. I was a bit dubious when I brought it, wasn’t sure if I would use it that much. However it is ages since I have used either of my ovens and very rarely use the gas hob now (except to do fried eggs to go with chips), just use the air fryer and/or microwave.
It has been an ongoing experiment and sometimes I ended up with a burnt offering, especially when I first started using it but have got most things sussed out now. Certainly worth the initial outlay.

On a more serious note I have a conundrum. I have noticed my 8 legged lodger seems to appear when Traitors is on. I was going to evict he/she (not outside, bit too cold, into my side store room) but am now wondering if I should let he/she watch to the end of the series to know who won or just leave he/she wondering. I suppose I could announce the winner in the side room but will this be the same as watching it?

  6. Thanks for all your best wishes. Still festering under my heated throw with my trusty (sleeping and snoring) guard dog by my side whilst finishing off the other half of my chocolate bar from yesterday. Normally there wouldn’t have been any left but it has crunched up bits of nut in it and it does make me cough. Still the suffering is worth the pleasure.

I have been trying to remember the last time I had a cold/virus and have realised it was before covoid. I presume this could be that since then up until later last year I have always worn a mask when going out near people? It is making me wonder if I should start wearing one again at the supermarket etc? Also if not having anything for awhile is why this has hit me so hard?

Things to ponder on at 3am when I can’t sleep for coughing.
On a lighter side a rather large spider has taken advantage of my ill health and taken up residence in my front room. He/she seems to live under my settee, but does come out, quite brazenly, to say hello. I do object when he/she appears on the arm of the settee whilst I am sitting on it and he/she has been knocked off unceremoniously with whatever is to hand but doesn’t seem to be phased. Letting he/she enjoy its little victories as when I feel better the neighbours ivy awaits.

  7. After coughing most of last night and still not feeling good I decided to phone doctors this morning at the 8am appointment scramble.  I was number 7 in the queue and didn’t hold out much hope of getting an appointment to be honest. Finally got through at about 8.25 and to my amazement got a telephone appointment with my registered doctor. He rang about 8.50am, went through everything, asked if I had done a covoid test, had done 3 last one yesterday, he asked me to go down to the surgery for 9.30am to see him. Didn’t really feel like going but got wrapped up and off I trudged.

When I got there the waiting room there was one other person in there and we sat and coughed and wheezed in unison. Got in quite quickly and had a general MOT, blood pressure, oxygen saturation etc. plus chest and throat.

He seemed to think it is viral but has given me antibiotics and said to wait a couple of days before taking them as it may clear up on its own. Also had a blood test as the medication I am on for my thyroid can affect your immune system although I am on the lowest dose possible.
When I was going out the surgery there was just one person sat there, not the same one as before I went in. It does make me wonder how many doctors are actually there seeing patients.
Anyway, can’t grumble about the treatment I received, wasn’t rushed and went thru everything, answering all my questions. The main problem is getting an appointment which won’t get any easier as they are still taking on new patients which seems crazy, but I believe they do get paid for each patient they have. No doubt I will be corrected if this is incorrect.
So am now snuggled under my heated throw along with my dog who is gently snoring by my side. Going to eat chocolate, between coughing fits, watch some strange programmes on Netflix and fester quietly!

  8. Belated happy new year to everyone.

Christmas this year wasn’t good. I went down with some lergy starting on Christmas Eve (there seems to be so much going round at the moment, a trip to the supermarket is like going to a TB ward with everyone coughing & wheezing). Christmas Day I felt like one of the walking dead and resigned myself to being housebound for a bit so for the next few days I stayed in and festered on the settee with a box of hankies, soothers and the remote control for the telly. Unfortunately had a really bad throat so had to stop my thyroid medication until it subsided which didn’t help. Did a couple of covoid tests but they were negative.
Started to feel a bit better day before New Years Eve, so ventured one of the local dog friendly pubs for a couple of hours, dog was pleased he does enjoy his plain crisps.
Presumed that was it, still had a bit of a cough but thought that would go. However I started to feel “off” again yesterday and this morning it appears to have come back, not so much of a sore throat this time but coughing a lot which isn’t good as I am supposed to be starting invigilating exams from Thursday.

Nipped in doctors this morning as I am a bit wheezy on my chest on the off chance they had any appointments (forever the optimist as my doctors came 47th out of 47 in Nottingham) to be told no appointments (no surprise there then). Asked when the next batch would be released and was told the practice manager was off until next week and some should be released after she is back. Left it at that with the parting shot I would come back when I had pneumonia. (This practice is still taking on new patients even though appointments are like hens teeth.) will try the 8am lottery if it doesn’t get any better.

Got back home and received an email which was sent out to all patients saying a lot of the staff are off sick so only doing appointments for emergencies.
You could not make this up:sickly:

  9. I do like a good horror film, not especially the “slasher” type although I do have the complete set of Freddy films and the first Halloween one was scary. But the one I have always found the most scary is the one about Hill House, can’t remember the title, was it The Haunting? Not the remake with Catherine Zeta Jones, the original black and white one, I always found the last words “Those who walk at Hill House walk alone” very chilling.
So I was intrigued to see that Netflix had done a series based on the book, had a quick look at trailer and it looked okay. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to watch it being on my own but yesterday decided to binge the whole series whilst the storm passed. Right sort of weather for a ghost story.

Snuggled down on settee with a blanket and Jj, who was soon snoring under the blanket. Decided if it was too scary would stop watching it.
It was a bit slow starting, it wasn’t easy to follow at first as it had a lot of flashbacks but persevered with it. By episode 4 I was starting to fast forward some flashbacks and decided to knit whilst I watched it. By episode 6 I was starting to get bored with it, the continual flashbacks were getting annoying.

I did finish the box set. However they had completely altered the story, the only thing from the original was the family name Crane. They had taken a frightening ghost story and made it warm and fuzzy, with no jumpy bits at all. It was boring and mundane and a bitter disappointment. 0 out of 5 stars I am afraid. The only good thing I finished the back of my jumper I am knitting.
I am going to see if The Haunting of Bly Manor is any better, don’t think it could be worse!

  10. It looks like it is that time of year again.

Sitting in my front room and saw something run into the hall, thought it was a mouse for a minute. When I went to look it was an enormous spider, and I mean enormous and built like Anthony Joshua, I had a bit of a panic as it was too big to go into my spider catching container.
Went into kitchen and got my big plastic jug and put it over the top of it and then had to decide how to get it outside which involved getting it into kitchen, down two steps and then out my French doors into the garden without hurting it or perish the thought touching it or even worse unleashing it back into the house.
Very gently pushed the jug along the floor giving it time to move as well, got it over the silver bit which joins the passage and kitchen floors up to the steps. It was getting a bit agitated by now so gave it a breather whilst contemplating how to get down the steps. Got a large old mug and put that on second step then carefully manoeuvred the jug and managed to get it into mug. Had a bit of a panic as it started to climb up the mug so quickly put it back into plastic jug then out into next doors ivy. Job done.

I did wonder how long I had been sharing my front room unknowingly with this monster and just hope it hasn’t left any friends behind.
I do have one in my side room that comes out occasionally to say hello but quickly scuttles back under the skirting board, whilst I protect it from the dog, once we have exchanged greetings. It is welcome to stay there as I don’t really use that room for much of anything just storage of garden furniture this time of year.
Anyway hopefully this will be the first and last of the big ones I get in this year.

  11. I have noticed with age I don’t care whether other people like my opinions or not. I don’t care about your colour, race or sexual gender, don’t understand the pronoun thing but am quite happy to call you whatever you want. I would listen to your opinions and, as long as they are not truly offensive or disrespectful, respect them as your opinions even if they are wrong! I wouldn’t try to forcibly change them but would be willing to have a discussion about why we have a different take on things.
Can’t be doing with people taking offence over the most trivial things which seems to be the trend at the moment, or the “I’m shouting loudest so I am right attitude”. Don’t like opinions, unless they are really bad, being shouted down by individuals or mobs either.

What is that saying “I disagree with your opinions but will fight for the right for you to express them”, or something like that.

  12. Like you DJ360 I first heard of her (and Ike) from River Deep and Proud Mary, going on to What’s Love Got To Do With It, We Don’t Need Another Hero and my all time favourite Simply The Best. She triumphed over a rough time with Ike Turner and became a superstar in every sense of the word. My biggest regret is never seeing her live on stage.
    Another one gone.
    RIP Tina Turner.

  13. On Thursday as usual we did our weekly shop. A rear brake light had gone so arranged to go to car shop to get it fixed.
Arrived at 5pm and as we were pulling into car park at front shops, which is one way, a black SUV pulled in the wrong way and then stopped blocking the exit. To our horror someone got out all dressed in black with his face half covered with the biggest gun I have ever seen, seen them in films but not in real life. Not an AK47 but very similar. Two more people appeared dressed the same one with a similar gun and the other one was getting something out of the car boot which looked like a missile launcher. They looked just like an American SWAT Team.

We couldn’t move as there was a car behind us. Eventually he backed up but one of the police came to the driver side window and told us to move forward towards their car. He had a big gun plus a sidearm, we certainly weren’t going to argue. The three walked past us to the shops at the end of the parade so we were stuck in an armed siege!
By this time a crowd was gathering, all filming on phones of course, and we could hear shouting coming from behind us. We weren’t sure whether to get out the car, in case bullets started flying, or stay where we were. So, of course, we rang the car shop which was one shop down from where we were parked and asked if they could change the brake light bulb. The assistant came out and changed the bulb, quickly I might add so at least that was done. We could hear more shouting and catcalling from behind us again.

Then a van driver appeared and moved a van which was parked at the side of us so there was a gap we could escape through. By this time there were other police officers there keeping the crowd back. We managed to get one of their attention, a very nice police lady and asked if the black SUV was going to be moved, but were informed it was blocking in a silver Astra so no time soon. We asked if we could back up a bit and then get away. She checked on her Walkie talkie, by this time the shops had been taped off, and then helped us back up and stopped the traffic on the road to let us get out.
We were stuck there about half to three quarters of an hour. Apparently the stand off went on for about an hour and a half, it was a domestic dispute I think and he got away!
Next weeks shopping will seem very mundane after this adventure!

  14. Took Jj out for a quick walk, he will have a longer walk later. What a lovely morning after the last few days, birds singing, sky blue (at moment), daffodils and snowdrops out. Feels like spring is arriving, might be able to ditch the thermals finally!

  15. My boy is taking part in the “Big Walkies” to raise money for the RSPCA which started on March 1st. He has so far walked 40 miles out of the total of 100 they intend to do through March, would have been more but the weather hasnt been co-operating. There area number of dogs to sponsor, so if you are interested please look up Big Walkies so we can raise as much money as possible. Thank you.
