  1. Got up this morning to a heavy frost so decided to take Jj to a different park than usual today. The one we usually go to has a fenced in, what used to be, tennis court so I go on there to throw his ball. Once the gate is shut I don’t have to worry about any loose dogs being on my own and can concentrate on the game but thought it might be a bit slippy for him to run on.
As usual had to chase him all over the house to get his coat on, once it is on he stands still and looks sorry for himself so it is easier to put the harness on. Got myself wrapped up, had my thermals on, and off we went.
The frost was quite thick in some places, almost like snow, and he got a bit giddy when we were walking on that. Got to the park and we were the only ones on there, it looked absolutely magical with the frost on the trees etc. Had a good game of running after the ball (Jj not me), plenty of snuffling in the leaves under the trees (Jj again) and generally having a good time. By now my fingers were starting to go dead so we walked back home.

Got back, both had breakfast and are now both snuggled on settee under my heated throw (thanks Octopus). He’s napping, I am reading a book.
    Life can be good.

  2. I have, since being diagnosed with my overactive thyroid, been under the care of the thyroid clinic at QMC for my medication. During that time they have tried to get me off the medication as I am classed as “borderline” and am on the lowest dose available, (don’t understand the borderline would have thought you either have it or not but who am I to argue with the professionals). This involved trying to cut down the tablets going from 1 a day to 1 every other day etc. Every time they have tried this it has sent readings haywire so had to go back to 1 a day to stabilise them and then they would try again with the same result.

At the same time they were trying to persuade me to have the radioactive treatment, which I had been advised not to have, and didn’t want anyway. Seems a bit like a hammer to crack a nut and I know someone who has had it and has now become underactive. They did mention it every time I had a telephone appointment, became a bit tedious to be honest.
I had a telephone appointment yesterday and they have finally decided that it is best for me to stay on the tablets (could have told them that a year ago)

asked if I had changed mind about the radioactive treatment (hadn’t) so I am being discharged back to my doctor.
Pleased about it in one way, hopefully no more messing about with medication making me ill again, but it is extremely hard to get an appointment with a doctor either on the same day (almost impossible) or in the future (very often ring and are told there aren’t any until a new batch are released in a few days). Keeping my fingers crossed there might be a thyroid nurse like the diabetic nurse which would a bit easier.
Frying pan and fire comes to mind.

doubt it mate, they've taken over the place, one couple walking towards us with the sweetest and smallest dog I have ever seen, I bent down to stroke the little chap and was told very abruptly (in an eastern european accent) do not touch my dog, not to worry eh

There have been dogs being forcibly taken from owners since prices rocketed during covoid. Although prices have dropped and it is no longer in the news I must admit I would have the same reaction to a stranger approaching my dog and you would get the same reaction (but in a Nottingham accent).

  4. Yesterday whilst we were walking Jj we went past Strelley Church there was a notice outside saying “church open”, never having been inside I decided to have a look.

There was an elderly gentleman inside and he gave me a guided tour giving me a lot of fascinating information.
I didn’t realise that Strelley is actually named for the, I presume, ruling family of that area. The tombs inside with the figures on top (are they effergies?) are quite spectacular and one of the married couples are actually holding hands which is highly unusual. Can’t remember their names, he did tell me, but the male fought with Richard the Lionheart in the crusades. There is another one, the male being the Crusaders nephew with his wife, they have their hands together in prayer. Next to them are 2 small graves which are for their first two children who died, a boy and a girl. There are also some earlier burials in the floor of the church, I think he said 13th century which are covered by carpet, he pulled it back so you could see them.
The ceiling is quite spectacular for such a small church as are the stained glass windows. There is a book on display which he showed me so you can see the designs on the windows in more detail.
There was a dig near the hall a few weeks ago where they were looking for the castle that was there, a forerunner of Strelley Hall which looks to be Georgian in the main and they have found evidence of where it was.
I wish a I had longer to stay there but Jj was getting noisey and my companion was getting cold, he did offer to make me a cup of tea and tell me more about the church but I had to go.
Apparently it is open every 3rd Sunday after the services. If you get the chance please go and have a look, it is a lovely little church with a lot of history and the gentleman who shows you round is really knowledgable about it. I’m sure he will love to make you a cup of tea!
I always thought there was a female pirate buried in the churchyard. There is a grave and on the headstone there is a skull and crossbones but apparently this is something that was put on headstones at one time and nothing to do with pirates. A childhood fantasy shattered:sorry:

Goodness haven’t posted for quite a while and then like buses two come along in quick succession.

  5. I am with octopus for my energy. Hadn’t heard of them until I moved into this house but can highly recommend them. I have just finished my first session of cutting down on consumption for an hour, even though I have cut back a lot (stopped using my electric oven, use microwave & gas hob, have heating only when really necessary etc.) and have saved the princely sum of 84p at the moment, every little helps. I had also applied for one of their free electric blankets again this year, did last year but didn’t get one. Had an email to say I wasn’t successful in getting one, a few days later I got another email to sat they had reviewed my account and I will be getting one now. :jumping:
(This is where netball comes in.) I live near a school which has its sport facilities across the road from my house. I was sitting on my settee, with both myself and Jj snuggling under a blanket doing my non-heating thing, when I looked out the window to see the net ballers arriving for their games. It was damp, cold and a little drizzly. Watched them all doing their warm ups before the game and then to my horror quite a few of them stripped off to just vest tops and little shorts. It made me cringe, I know they would be running around but really in November, bet their legs were chapped after!
My smart meter nearly gave me a heart attack yesterday. I try not to look at it every time I go in the kitchen which can be quite hard. I glanced at it yesterday and it was showing £18.28 on the display about lunch time. Made me go into a panic having heard all the horror stories of people getting enormous bills when the meters go haywire. When I looked closer it was telling me I was near my budget for the week, having the central heating on occasionally taking it over obviously. Finally managed to get on to set the gas budget, could only find the electric one before. So am still about on target for what I want to pay.

Lastly but not least my favourite topic, spiders. For the past few weeks I have been having an ongoing battle with one in my bedroom. One of the ones that is all legs and hardly any body. I have been sneaking up on it trying to catch it, but the flipping thing can move and disappears under the bed or wardrobes. It hasn’t been easy sleeping in there knowing it is skulking around. I have woken up once and was eyeball to eyeball with it sitting on my pillow, never got out of bed so fast! This afternoon I finally managed to catch it, it was in the middle of my bed relaxing and I managed to sneak up on it. Took it into my side room to let it go. At the moment I also have another one in residence, not an enormous one but it is jet black and to be honest looks quite onminous (spelling?) don’t  think I want to mess with this one.  So I let my spindly one go well away from it telling it to keep away from the other resident. I might add the spindly one had grown a bit since being in my bedroom unless horror upon horror there were two. Doesn’t bear thinking about so won’t go there.
So that is finally all, I don’t post so much at the moment, probably shows how boring my life is at the moment, but do enjoy reading all your posts. Keep well everyone.

  6. The high energy costs are a real worry. It will be like going back to my childhood when we lived in a house with just a coal fire in the front room for heating, no central heating. I can remember my dad putting coats over our beds as well as blankets to keep us warm.
I will be using my gas fire in the front room and just use the central heating sparingly. This year I should be able to just about manage but have no idea how I will cope next year if prices rise even more being on a pension. I am just above pension credit limit so that cuts off a lot of benefits.
I do get a bit extra invigilating at a school during the exams but don’t know how much longer I will be able to do this due to health conditions. Might have to consider downsizing next year possibly although I do like it where I am at the moment.

  7. Whilst not being bothered about the monarchy one way or the other I did by default (had watched something I had recorded and had just gone back to normal tv when Sky News were showing his speech) a bit of King Charles speech yesterday.
I must say my heart did go out to him as a man who has just lost his mother,  he looked, as anyone would, devastated and tearful. Don’t know why he had to do it but I found the bit I saw uncomfortable viewing.

  8. I do not usually take much notice of what is happening in the world of politics, to be honest it never seems to make any difference to my circumstances who is in power. But I find the new prime minister somewhat alarming looking at her track record and some of her utterances (eg tax cuts) and have a horrible feeling she could be out of her depth?
Like Octalgian I am just above the threshold for Pension Credit so will miss out on some of the help being offered, but rightly it is going to those in greatest need as it should. It is all a bit worrying, my summer bills have gone up by 50% before the next price rise comes in. Looks like thermals and blankets will be in order in winter!

Talbot Street looks absolutely nothing like I remember it. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

To be honest BK not much in Nottingham looks like it used to and not necessarily changed for the better. Surprised the lions are still here.

  10. I worked for Times Furnishing, it was their default department that was in Pinfold House. (Sometimes think that is why I am so cynical listening to all the bu....it why they were not able to pay for their furniture.) We had a tame squirrel who would sit on the window sills waiting to be fed. It started coming inside but our manager objected so we had to keep it outside.

  11. After living just outside Doncaster for 40 years before coming back home to Nottingham I remembered the city centre as it was then. Loads of shops and department stores, C&A, Chelsea Girl, Birdcage, Debenhams, the market etc. All the shoe shops on Clumber Street, Cavendish Woodhouse for furniture (I worked in their offices for a long time on Talbot Street in Talbot House and then in an annex across the road which backed onto the graveyard). It was a vibrant busy city centre.
Doncaster town centre is not good, seems to be mostly clubs, pubs and fast food places. If you go in on Monday morning it smells like a public toilet not nice at all. So when I came back I expected Nottingham to be a lot better.
It is a bit better than Doncaster (not saying much really) but, as with most places I suppose, it seems most of the shops I remember are gone and what has happened to the Market Square? Must admit don’t go in very often, just a couple of times this year to see what Primark have in and have a wander round Vic Centre and always go to look at the clock. We tend to go to Bulwell and Ilkeston more now and get stuff off the internet.
We did go in last week and went on what was once a flourishing market, sad to see it how it is now with most of the stalls empty. It will be a big loss when it closes which seems inevitable.

  12. After a long hiatus from my gigantic 8 legged nemeses ( google assured me this is the plural of nemesis although my iPad thinks it is nemesis’s) I went in my side room this morning and there was the biggest spider I have ever seen chilling on the wall. Big black thing built like Anthony Joshua.
Went in to get my spider repatriation kit. Can you remember the scene in Jaws when Brody is dumping chum in the water and the shark surfaces and looks at him and he (Brody not the shark) says “We need a bigger boat”, well it was a bit like that I definitely needed a bigger spider kit.
So went back in kitchen and rummaged about, finally found a cup for soup with 2 handles which was big and deep enough but needed something to get the offender into it. Ended up with my long handled fluffy thing I use to dust above my doors etc.
So deep breath and went to do battle now with an audience, a very excited dog, not because of what his brave mum was about to do, but because he wanted to savage my long handled fluffy thing. Took stock of the situation and tried to work out where was best to hold the pot so the spider didn’t land on my hand.

Finally decided to go for it, got my fluffy thing out of the dogs mouth and positioned it above the interloper and gently pushed it into the bowl quite successfully if I say so myself. I did have visions of it disappearing into the fluffy thing but perhaps it was asleep and I sneaked up on it. Looked in the bowl and to my horror she/he was climbing up the side as it was ridged inside and it could get purchase on the sides and it looked so much bigger, swear I could see it’s fangs. Quelled the impulse to just throw the bowl and ran across the room, seemed to take ages to get the door unlocked and open, should have planned better and done it before project evict spider, shook bowl so she/he went back to bottom and then she/he was deposited in next doors garden.
Had a good shudder. Gave dog fluffy thing and had a cup of tea and chocolate biscuit or two.
Just hope she/he tells its mates no vacancies this year in my side room!

  13. I was in the same year as Taff, can remember him and Elizabeth Clipson, she had really long hair, in the year below us. I had left before his accident as he stayed on, but can remember being told about it. I was told he was knocked out and left on side of field to come round and was then sent home. Became ill later and was taken to hospital where he passed.
He was very fond of a girl called Heather in our year, can’t remember her second name, but she wasn’t interested.

  14. Today has been a good day. Had a couple of weeks feeling a bit rough, as I had been invigilating exams I did some covoid tests as some of the symptoms were a bit suspect but they all were negative thankfully.
Been feeling better last couple of days, so this morning went out early with Jj for a walk before it got too hot, will take him out again later on when it has cooled down a bit again. Had a nice salad for dinner and then listened to one of my favourite podcasts (Small town murder).
After that I settled down with a cold drink (lime & lemon) and my mind wandered (as it is apt to do) to some of life’s more vexing questions.

Why when flies are in a window that opens and you open it for them why do they persist in hurling themselves at the glass?
How is it that my vet shows me how to give my dog liquid medicine & he takes it no trouble. But when I do it it ends up over the floor, walls, ceiling & me. None in the dog at all.

Why when I am in a crowd am I the only one that gets bitten by a mossie/gnat or terrorised by a wasp?
Why won’t my dog take his “palatable” dog worming tablets like the dogs in the adverts?
Why do spiders always run towards me?
Why when someone comes to my house to do some repair/upgrade do they explain things either in “tech talk” or as if I am 10 years old?
Why when the breeze blows in open windows do the blinds end up outside the window?
Oh well I suppose some mysteries are better left as that, all adds to life’s rich tapestry.

  15. I have had recently 2 (1 of which is still ongoing) what I can only describe as bloopers when ordering from the Internet, 1 of then could almost be described as a scam.
I do order mainly dog stuff (it can be cheaper than pet shops) but usually from sites I use frequently but have been caught out recently.
The first one was a anxiety relieving dog bed from Buddies Pet Store, it was a bit expensive but looked really good in the pictures and reviews were excellent. The bed was priced in UK pounds so I presumed it was a UK site and I ordered it. Got confirmation of order and delivery dates. The delivery date was over 2 weeks, should have realised then that something was amiss but hindsight is a marvellous thing. I waited a week and then emailed then to see if it had been dispatched as I had heard nothing from them, they assured me it was on its way and I would get tracking info from the Post Office soon, which I actually never did. However I received this smallish parcel and wondered what it was. It was the bed, it did expand when I managed to get it open, it had been vacuum packed.

When I saw it I was horrified. It looked nothing like the pictures, the stuffing was in big lumps in the base and the raised edge had places where there wasn’t any stuffing at all. The cover, which I can only describe as being like shag pile, was also not as luxurious as the picture showed either, you could see the backing through it. I emailed them so I could return it and was then horrified to find out that it had come from Australia!  They wanted pictures to show what was wrong with it which I sent and they agreed there was a problem.
I went to the Post Office to see how much it would cost to send it back and it was going to be £31, the bed cost £50! I contacted them again pointing out that I would not have ordered it if I had known where it was coming from, the prohibitive price to send it back, that it was not as shown, I didn’t want a replacement and after emails back and forth I did get my money back.
You would have thought that once bitten twice shy but no. I ordered a harness from Big Ralph. It was just what we wanted, Jj is a bit of a jumper upper and this had a handle in the harness which would have given us more control. Ordered it, got confirmation of order, but then didn’t hear anything more. Emailed them and was told it was en route. Eventually got it and it was rubbish, completely different harness to the one I ordered, really cheap and nasty.

Sent an email to their “return” address, nothing, rang the phone number went to voicemail, emailed the address where I got the “it’s in its way” email from, you guessed it nothing. Went on Trustpilot (I know, I know I should have done that before I ordered it) and was horrified. It is a Chinese company that pretends to be an English website according to the reviews, you are lucky to get the goods apparently and they are cheap rubbish if you do get them. They never reply to emails if there is a problem and you want a refund or don’t get the goods, the phone number always goes to voicemail and you never get an answer to your left messages. They have been reported to Trading Standards, don’t know if they can do anything to be honest and virtually every review says “don’t order from them”. There are a few positive ones but they seem a bit suspect.
Starting to think I am not safe to be let loose on the internet by myself:Shock:
