  1. Anthony here....

With regards to Main Street....I had breakfast this morning at the cafe in Carlton Square shopping precinct (you know...the cafe next to Boots). Anyway the cafe was empty, and a young lady came in and asked to sit opposite me - I of course obliged!!!

I struck up a conversation by asking if she came to the cafe regularly. The lady mentioned said she has sat at the same table for years, and was born and bred in Carlton. I asked Barbara if it would be too rude to ask her age (I am a gentleman), she said that she was 88 years old. My thought process went into overdrive at hearing this.

Well you know me with stories......The story of Vi, and her Dad's Fish and Chip Shop etc. When I had a breather, Barbara said she remembers Aslam's Butchers, and then rattled off the names of all the other shops on Main Street. Well I normally have my pocket note book, but this morning I must have had a brain-freeze (a bit like the weather!!) - no note book.

Not to worry..... I'm meeting Barbara for breakfast tomorrow on the same table (got to be there earlier.... she's having her hair done at 11:00!!). It's my treat.... 2 egg on toast and mushrooms and a cup of tea.

    Cliff Ton

This has probably been done already, and in any case, you could get the same info from a Directory, but my project for tomorrow is to identify as many shops with Barbara on a map.

Can you provide me with a link to a large enough scale map that I can print and identify shops with Barbara over breakfast?

During our conversation Barbara mentioned her school, named her Headmaster and other useful titbits. With this in mind, I would be receptive of any requests for questions for me to ask of Barbara. I will of course advise her of this Forum, the reason for the questions and from whom they have come from beforehand.

  2. Anthony here....

I spoke to Vi yesterday at her weekly church coffee morning about old school photo's, (in a roundabout way), without letting on as to what I was doing. I like to keep surprising her!!

As is always the case, her photo's disappeared years ago. The same as my school photos (my brother threw them out when he cleared my Mum's house. If I was in Nottingham at the time, I would have given him a 'black eye' for doing it. He had no interest in history - what a Philistine!! Anyway I digress...

I spoke to another person during coffee, only to find, he too went to Standhill Road School too - I think he's 95 years old. He said he will look for his old photos.

I have asked Vi and her friend to write down half a dozen anecdotes from their school days, so that I can present the same to the current Headmaster, with a view to sharing the stories with the current crop of pupils (my nephew included). I want to bring 'living history' to the kids.

  3. Anthony here....

I went to Nottingham Archives yesterday to look for any Standhill Road Junior School records that had been deposited. Wow things have changed since the last time I visited 20-years ago... Having searched the Schools Admission and Log Book indexes, I asked the Archivist questions about access to the records. Although he was very helpful I came out empty handed, other than a list of documents I wanted to view.

I was advised that due to 'Data Protection' laws, I couldn't view any records that had names on them until 100-years had lapsed (same as census records)!! I've got to e-mail the Archive to ask  them to search for me (got to pay for this). I don't mind paying (anything for Vi). The last time I searched for School Admissions, I walked out with the list of all pupils enrolling in Peveril for my year (inc loads of over info - previous Junior school, addresses, parents names etc. It seems the Government want to lock away info, as if it "Top Secret"!!

    The search goes on.........

Hi Peveril Pete - I had to check Google for your location..... It must be draughty at Peveril Castle!! Straight question - Is there an area called Peveril, or are you referring to the actual school area ie Aspley?

Hi Jill - You suspected correctly - Berridge Senior Boys sounds before my time. Thanks for the complement though.

    Ian

The matchsticks holding up my eyes lids are starting to give way!!

I have gone through the previous posts and my thoughts are.......

Bobby 'Blue' Bland - totally agree with you. What a beautiful woman, singer & guitarist. I am ashamed to say that I have never heard of her. It looks like I will have to devout some time searching You Tube and checking out her history.

Tami Lynn - great tune. I've got to watch that video on the 55" screen. Love the dancing couples.

There is another artist that I want to check out, but can't read my own hand writing.... tell you tomorrow.

Lizzie, I am gutted. I thought were we getting on so well!!

I guess I used to 'dance a bit funny'. To the 'untrained eye' the moves may look funny, but it took hours of practice to look funny. I suppose it's akin to a viewer watching Monty Python for the first time and seeing John Cleese in the 'Ministry of Funny Walks' sketch. Yes I agree, even to my eye there were some weird moves - contortionists!!

As with you, I love Motown too, but you hear it so much on Gold FM and other like stations, that it becomes background music after a while.

No - it was straight to Peveril for me. Obviously Berridge would have saved a lot of walking and buses.

I have thought about this before and have considered the Peveril was the best location for me. Berridge was in a very cramped location from memory (they must have used the Forest for sports, I don't know). Peveril had a great big playing field, it was virtually the countryside!!

Hey Ian, I have to take issue with regards to Skiing in The Snow, yes the corny Top of The Pops version was absolute tosh. The original though by the Invitations is a different matter for me.

That's a good track you posted. If you want to swap tracks - teach me!! Do me a favour - post "Better Use Your Head" for me. I can listen while contemplating posts!!

I feel another memory coming..... Our old haunt was the Cricketers (now under the Ice Stadium). Ok, it was a Berni Inn, but it was handy, as I said I used to live at Cartergate. We could get a drink there ( I was 16), and play pool. Anyway, although we were not interested in Ten Pin Bowling, we visited the Bowling Alley round the corner about every 2-months. We would walk in with our 'crappiest shoes, and walk out with a brand new pair of bowling shoes - great for dancing.

We also visited the Army & Navy store opposite Peggers to get the grand dad shirts. Millett's was a favourite shop - we used to buy these red shoes with leather uppers and soles (really great for dancing, especially spinning!!).

  9. Anthony here.....

Just found this thread - don't start me off... well go on then!!

Yes I was into Northern Soul, as previously posted (ref Colemans & Palais). The Palais All-Nighter's were banging!!

Me and my mate Steve (by chance we found each other again after 45-years - wow now that was a massive slice of luck!!) Fate's a funny thing......

Anyhoo, we used to trawl the second hand shops for 45's, as we did in those days. Can you remember the second hand shop on Canning Circus, it was about 20-30yds from the Running Horse pub. I found a copy of 'Pick Me Up And Put Me In Your Pocket', it was 50p. Sold it down an All Nighter, cant remember what I sold it for though!!

My all time favourite song - Little Anthony and The Imperials, Better Use Your Head. Still have to dance to that when I hear it. When I say dance, I mean 'shuffle' - not as athletic as I used to be doing back flips, handstands and spins!!

  10. Anthony here...

Umm the last posting for Peveril was Feb 2018... I hope somebody is still interested in Peveril, as attended the school from 1970-72.

Don't know why I was shipped out all the way out to Aspley to go to the secondary school.....we lived on Acourt Street, Hyson Green at the time. My best mates were Gary Orange, who lived on Cope Street, Stephen Fox (Southey Street) and Glenn Marshall who lived in the tall flats off Hartley Road (can't remember the name of the flats, but I think he lived on the 7th floor.

My fondest memories about the school was the cricket, (No1 Batsman), and Javelin. I hated running long distances round the track ie 400 and 800yds in those days (I think). I also enjoyed woodwork and metal work too, although I have no recollection of the names of teachers. PS - Academically I was a late developer, but came good at other schools, colleges and university.

I had a crush on Elaine Brown who was in my same year at the time. I don't think she knew - I was very shy!!

My two friends and I would spend the threepence bus fare and walk back from school in the summer months, and would go scrumping and raiding birds nests for eggs in the allotments on the corner of Aspley Lane and Western Boulevard - those were carefree days.

Talking about my friends - on Friday nights we all went to Glen's flat, his parents would go out for the night and leave us to our own devices!! We gorged on crisps, sandwiches, cakes, sweets and Corona Dandelion and Burdock (burp). The entertainment on the tele was The Goodies - Goodies, Goody Goody Yum Yum.

  11. Dear All

With regards to the memories of Vi, she told me that she attended the Standhill Road Junior School, which is now Porchester Junior School. The original building is still in use, and is situated on the corner of Standhill Road and Morley Road, Carlton.

My next assignment is to obtain old photos of the school, hopefully class photos circa 1935-1940. a) Vi might be on a photo, b) if not, maybe some former friends. Just checked a few websites, have drawn a blank so far!! It looks like I might need to delve into somebodies private collection - if I can find that somebody!!! I might even whizz down to Nottm Archives tomorrow to see if they have a file and records pertaining to the school.

When I go on the school run tomorrow, I will speak to the Headmaster for info too, as I noted that there are some old photo's on the reception wall.

Wow - just thought of something else. Get the kids involved to. If Vi is up for it we could do a presentation to the classes, so that she could provide her memories from 80-years ago to the current crop of kids. I think the Headmaster might go for that too!!

  12. Hi David

Just got in from the garden (started at 07:30), boy it's nippy out there this morning. Dug up 3no fruit trees - boy those roots were tough!! Thought I would sign in again before popping down to B&Q. I digress...

The lady that VI vaguely recognised was the lady on the left of the row of four gentlemen (unfortunately not you great Aunt). When I Vi tomorrow I will mention Ethel and Frank Trueman, also Mrs Haslam. We'll see if her 'light bulb lights up above her head!!

Vi couldn't make out if the bus was Trent or Barton - any idea? Where do you think these day-trippers were going, Skeggy maybe!!

If you know of any more names, 'shout out', and I will pass onto Vi.

Incidentally, Vi mentioned that she went to what is now called Porchester Road Junior School on Morley Road. I can't remember what name the school was in her day.  She hasn't mentioned having any photo's, so that might be another avenue to explore for her, ie photos of the school (preferably class photos, and names of children). Vi was born in 1928, so I looking at approx 1935-1940.

Incidentally, I visit the same school every afternoon - school run to pick up my Nephew. I'm just round the corner so handy for my Sister!!

Something has just dawned on me. Was F. W. Towle in competition with the shop next door ie the butcher. Why is a Fish and Chip Supper Room offering Tripe etc. Umm - presumably buying from next door, and cooking to eat on the premises.

Haven't seen the photo, but the mention of Cartergate tweaked my interest.

My Mum, brother and I moved from Waterway Street in the Meadows when it was demolished to No1 Cartergate in 1976, I think. I was just going to college at the time so was 16 years old.

What was interesting about No1 Cartergate was the feature in the garden. We were given the key to a door in the sandstone rock face. When I opened the door we found it led to a cave, that appeared to me to have been occupied at some point in time. Although many years later I think I read that the location was once the Plague burial ground.

    Just a little ditty.

I've had a stiff 'two' doubles - feel a lot better now.

  15. Anthony again

Well I had a brilliant 3-hour conversation with my neighbour, who I can reveal is Violet (she prefers Vi). The first item on our agenda was the messages that I have posted, and the responses that everybody has provided. I read all your responses to her, she had a good laugh and provide more info. I will keep it short but here are her responses.

    1. 620 Main Street change to 27 Burton Road.

    2. Vi fathers shop was indeed eventually became Rex Robinson's Cycles and Mopeds. Thanks for the photo, it saved time driving down Carlton Hill to have a look.

    3. The shop is still derelict. I was wrong... The new Gents barbers is the shop on the extreme left of the photo.

    4. The shop to the right of Rex Robinson, was indeed Haslam Butchers. Vi thinks that the shop to the right of Rex was the Liberal Club at one point.

    5. Vi lived above the shop until 1930 aged 2 years and moved 'up the hill'. She has lived at the same house now for 88-years!!

    6. With reference to the bus photo, Vi has vague memories of the bus driver and the lady on the extreme left standing in front of the bus, but cannot remember their names.

    7. Vi lived next Mr & Mrs Tivey (she didn't know their names, only as Mr & Mrs Tivey), and knew there children, Harry and Ida.

    8. Vi new Enid Coleman personally.

    9. I revealed the fountain photos slowly on my computer screen, and without any prompt from me, Vi excitedly stated "that is Billy Merrin". Vi was a friend of Billy's grand daughter too.

Well, the above is a summary of 90-mins. The next 90-mins was about her family tree, and again Vi's 'little grey cells' went into overdrive.

I feel that we have all contributed to making Vi's Saturday visit one to remember for her. Thanks for all your help.

Finally, if this works, please find attached a photo of a paper carrier bag from 1930 that Vi's Dad, Frederick saved for her (for obvious reasons this is precious to Vi). I felt honoured simply picking it up!!!

Help, I've resized the photo to 65kB but still exceed the forum limit. I'll have to get a crash course via internet to get the photo smaller!!

    Regards

  16. Dear All

Just woke up with a brain-wave, so straight to the keyboard!!

During my last visit to my neighbour, I commented on a photograph that I spotted on her dining room wall of a couple in Ballroom dancing attire. It was a photo of her and her late husband (I think it was taken in the late 50's). We talked about dancing, as I was going out that night to do exactly the same thing, (not ballroom dancing though!!).

In my teenage years I was into Northern Soul, so I mentioned that I used to go to the 'Colmans' on Clumber Street on Sunday evenings, and the Palais on Monday evenings. She told to me that she used to  go ballroom dancing at both Colmans and the Palais. She said "I know something about the Palais that you don't". I said what was that? She said that there used to be a fountain in the middle of the Palais dance floor.

So here's the task.... I am looking for an image of the interior of the Palais with the fountain 'centre stage', so to speak. While were at it, although Colmans was in effect just a large room, there may be photo knocking about of people ballroom dancing in there.

I have found a photo on 'Picture Nottingham' however its got a massive symbol of a camera spoiling the view. Clearly, I have to buy it!! So you keyboard warriors, this your task for today....should you choose to accept it. Da, da , da, da - da, da, da, da.....Mission Impossible by keyboard!! My visitor arrives at 14:30, (with her herbal tea), so that's your time frame.

Finally, when I said I suppose you watch 'Strictly', she said "that's not ballroom dancing, it's commercial rubbish to get TV ratings". She is proper old school!!

Right, going out into the garden to plant a tree....

    Regards

    Anthony
