  1.     Think Ellerslie House used to be a wounded service mens home. Not sure it would have been used for maternity purposes. Could have the wrong building.
The building mentioned by @philmayfield may have been a hotel, however, I could be wrong.

There was definitely a home for wounded service men Mansfield Road end of Gregory Boulevard.

  2.    The house was apparently built for the doctor/surgeon who ran the dispensary. Whether that was still the situation when @Beekayturned up, I cannot say. Maybe there were complications with the birth and that’s why @Beekayarrived where he did. It was wartime so many occurrences happened in a different way.

Family rumours can be misleading at times, a mixture of fact and fiction accruing over time.

Whatever the outcome, be yourself, once here, the only certainty is death, it’s what happens in between that matters.

I don’t know. Kick start an old thread and @Beekay gets a blue plaque!!!

  3.      @Cliff Ton: this is a wonderful photograph capturing so much activity.
6 steam locos and a steam rail car. 3 locos from each railway company.

Some pointless information: it appears the photographer would likely to have been standing on the ballast on the up slow line on your photo showing Marsdens shop.

In 1898 The Foresters Arms were recorded as being a beer house. Quite a lucrative undertaking at that time with all those navvies looking to quench their thirst.

Any chance you could put this photo in one of the Victoria threads?

  4.       Am also confused. I didn’t think Union Road and Glasshouse Street met up in 1890.

When Victoria Station was built Glasshouse Street moved slightly so the Glasshouse Street you see now at the Northern end didn’t exist.

I could be totally wrong and fully expect to be taken out at dawn to face punishment. However, is the building with twin towers the maltings which stood on Mill Street? If so than Marsdens likely moved to Union Street during the turmoil of the station buildings being built.

Whatever the outcome, it’s a wonderful period photograph.

  5.     Used to walk from Huntingdon Street bus station & through the foot bridge over Victoria Station, but have no recollection of any houses being there. I only remember a piece of rough ground used for parking. (Bus station should be top left hand corner, but doesn’t appear to have been built when photo taken.)
