  1. Hi all

From joining this forum and Ann Swabey’s help,  I now have one definite new brother and 2 more possibles, and possible Sister.  I would have been happy with a photograph, I have 12. Also my Father was I’m told steward of the Variety club in the 50’s with his then wife Audrey. He had an off licence on Radford rd before the Variety. After the Variety he and his wife managed the Sherwood Rooms.  I will post more later. A big thank you to Ann and David w.

  2. Hi Jill

Thanks for this, I have sent for a birth certificate and a marriage certificate concerning a Ken Clarke  who is a good probable. At the end of the day I just want a photograph. There are people I’m sure who know my Dad, I want nothing but a picture, I don’t want to disrupt your life, I don’t want money, I want nothing but a picture. I would be forever grateful.

Are you Victor K? Son of Frances M Weedon and Kenneth W Clarke who were married in 1940?

Do you possibly have a sister, born in 1950, in Leicester?

I am.  Do you have any info on probable Sister

  4. Hi

All 3 towers had to be abseiled and surveyed, it was very hot on the first drop, my descender got to hot with rope passing through it, and seized, bottled water was lowered down to me to cool it. The rest of the drops had to be done early morning. Health and safety was pretty poor in Kuwait. On the main tower with the large globe which is a revolving restaurant the Iraqis had tied their flag to the metal discs, I cut the flag down. We were invited that night to the Bayan palace for a meal.

  5. A bit about myself.  76 years old, still working. Premises manager for  an Architectural  practice in Nottingham.  Was a commercial diver working off shore.  I was in Kuwait 90/91 carrying out abseiling surveys.  I abseiled the Kuwait water Towers among other high structures.

Vic you seem to indicate that the Kenneth W Clarke in the court case mentioned above is yours .

There was another report of the same case that said Kenneth was aged 26 ( in 1944) .  This computes to him being born in 1918 .

Moving forward to the wartime 1939 Register there was a Kenneth W Clarke , a grocery manager living on Carlton Road with a Skellington family .

This register doesn't give any relationships between residents within a property and he may have just been a lodger there ? (His occupation does match the later court case.)  Fortunately the Register does give a date of birth .12th Feb 1918 .

I am sure you realise that given this date of birth it's  likely your father may have passed on .

Indeed there is a death in the registers for a Kenneth Walter Clarke in the 4th Qtr of 1987 in Truro district , quite a way further West than Bristol that you mentioned in another message . However the death record does give his date of birth as 12th Feb 1918 , matching that given in 1939.

Of course this is all circumstantial , the "Kenneth W" in 1939 could have had a different middle name and the "Kenneth Walter" in 1987 could have jetted in from some other place on the planet and just happened to have the same date of birth.

Thank you, my birth certificate does show the army reference and indeed storekeeper.

I have the deeds for the Variety going back to the eighteen hundreds it was not a club until 1959 & I have never seen or heard that name mentioned & sadly most I could have asked are now dead. Sorry.

Thank you for your reply. I have posted elsewhere on the forum(ancestry)  a very good friend of mine now passed on told me Ken Clarke sorted his wedding reception out at the Variety club, this would be very early sixties.

  9. I’m searching for information on my Father  Kenneth Walter Clarke. I’m 76 and never met him. Info I have so far. Early sixties could have been the manager of the Variety club. An old friend of mine who has now sadly passed used to sing at the Variety club, Sam Souter. Sam married his wife Beryl, Sam told  me my Father sorted the reception out at the Variety club. I went down to the club this was years ago, the guy who opened the door to me was a big guy with a beard, he told me Ken Clarke had left and gone to Bristol. I have searched a long time with many dead ends. I am told he was a very smart man, always suited up and had pure white hair.

I am Jill, don’t know of a Sister in Leicester, I have very limited information. My parents probably divorced/annulled approx 1944/45. It’s a long story.

  11. Thanks for having me. I’m trying to find any information on my Father Ken Clarke, I have been told he had something to do with the Variety club. I’m 76 and never met or saw my Father, not even a photograph, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
