Very moving.......felt for the mining families when it all came to an end.........so sad.........not that i would ever have considered working down the Pit.........many of my old mates spent their working lives in the Mines...........I was asked on leaving school by the ''Jobs Officer'' which Pit was i going down...?...TOLD HIM....

This looks Woodhorn Pit Museum, near Ashington, Northumberland. My dad worked for many years there.

  2. Bat out of Hell!!

Last Summer we were asleep in bed when I was awoken by a sucking/clicking sound on my pillow, about 2 inches from my ear. I ignored it at first thinking it was my imagination, can't be my wife trying to revive memories of yesteryear I thought? Then suddenly, it stopped and this was followed by a slight flapping sound coming in various directions across the bedroom. I sat up in the dark, noticing my wife had left the bedroom window open. I thought, oh no, a bird must has flown in. So, I shot up, switched the bedside light on, shook my wife and said "get up"! we have a bird in here ( Ok, don't say it, "you have two!). Looked down at my pillow and there in its original position was a small brown bat. Not expecting to share my pillow at 3am with multi-fanged thing, the sensible action would have been to throw a towel or something over it and gently place it outside the window. However, sense and sensibility had gone out of the window instead. My wife screamed, I managed a 'uh uh uh' sound, I pulled off my T-shirt (thats all I was wearing, well, it was summer!), my wife whipped off her nightie ( and that was definitely all she was wearing! ). Then we started to chase the Bat around the bedroom, armed with  our nightwear, trying to get it to fly out of the open window. After about 10mins, it finally made the great escape. Exhausted, we looked at each other and bust out laughing, the laughing suddenly stopped when turning around to close the window, we noticed our neighbours across the road were awake also, I guess wondering what all the commotion was about? They must have witnessed the whole thing! We dived into bed, (no time to retrieve our nightwear), switched off the light. As I was trying to drift off......................the sucking/clicking started again, near my ear..................this time no Bat.......just the opportunity to revive memories of yesteryear!

  3. As a member of Cotgrave Youth Club in 1965, I attended a dance/gig starring a group called 'Our Young'. Does anyone know anything about them?

I was told many years later,  that some of the members formed '10 Years After', then again someone said they morphed into 'Led Zeppelin'. Perhaps none of the previous is true, however if anyone has any information of this 60's group 'Our Young', I would appreciate it.

  4. I was more interested in girls, Motown and beer when I lived in Nottingham.(17-18yrs old). However if this subject is your thing, can I suggest you read 'Hidden Persuaders' by Vance Packard (published in 1957). I read it when I was studying for my ONC at Peoples college. For me it could send a glass eye to sleep, however Brew, DJ360 and others might find it interesting?

Vance Packard's book The Hidden Persuaders, about media manipulationin the 1950s, sold more than a million copies.

In The Hidden Persuaders, first published in 1957, Packard explored advertisers' use of consumer motivational research and other psychological techniques, including depth psychology and subliminal tactics, to manipulate expectations and induce desire for products, particularly in the American postwar era. He identified eight "compelling needs" that advertisers promise products will fulfill (Emotional Security, Reassurance of worth, Ego gratification, Creative outlets, Love objects, Sense of power, Roots, Immortality).

I drove to my Daughter's on Saturday evening.. to do a bit of DIY for her.  Much as I love Sarah Vaughan's 1954 eponymous album.. It had been on repeat in the car for a while...

So.. at one of the many sets of lights on the A580 'East Lancs Road'.. I rummaged in my discs.. as you do.. and came up with 'Penguin Eggs' by Nic Jones.  A classic 1980s Folk album. Sadly Nic was prevented from fulfilling his potential after a serious road accident.. but if he only ever did this album.. he made his mark. Terrific guitar work. and then that strong voice..

A PC will need to install a codec to open a heic file. Double click it and it will ask if it can install it.

It's easier if Apple users convert pics to jpg format before posting...;)

Thanks Brew. Will ask my 5yr old granddaughter to help me with that!

Took my car to the usual carwash this afternoon, £10! HOW MUCH?? I asked why the increase, it's because of Covid he said. I drove off and found another...  Cheeky sod...

£10!.. thats cheap, Here in Windsor, before Covid, the indoor carwash charged a minimum of £25..... and no discount for Electric! ....................to be fair, that was for a clean inside and outside, they also demand cash........umm..........not a good move during this Covid pandemic!

    Welcome Nottingham Mod

You can get know one better than the BOSS

    Bruce Springsteen album "Magic"

    one of the best.

Thanks! will give it a Blast. 'Thunder Road" brings back memories of when I was 18yr, driving my Ford Thames 5cwt van (with two airbeds in the back..... sold unused!) flat out on the A52 At 57mph, not quite "Thunder Road".........but hey, everything was thrilling at 18yr!

  10. We as a family moved to Cotgrave in 1965, I was 15yrs old, My dad (Jimmy Milburn) worked at the Colliery from 1965 - 1983 as a Fitter. He was the Chairman (Manager) of Cotgrave Miners Welfare Football team in the late 1960's and early 1970's. I knew many of his friends, Don Parsons, Norman White, Billy Repper. Maybe some still alive who remember him?

  11. I remember my first visit to the Brit. It was summer 1967, I was just 17yrs old.  After a couple of pints with my mates at the TBI .....owooch ....2/6d ! for a pint of Double Diamond (usually 1/10d at the local; Just thought...was that legal? ....anyway, who was bothered in 1967! ) So, I was 'invited' to attend my first club/disco by my more experienced compadres. They led the way, swaggered down the side of the Trent to the 3 greatest clubs to ever exist, The Boat, Union and the Brit! we approached the Brit. I remember the Motown sound blasting ( 'Take me into your arms and love me"....by Gladys Knight & the Pips)  from two huge Whafedale Speakers positioned outside, each side of the entrance. Never forgot the thrill as the music got louder as we got nearer.

Thus began my introduction to the best music Motown/Soul/Blues I ever experienced! Over the next 18 months I was a regular attendee of the Brit with the occasional spin off to the Boat and the Union.

I saw Rod with Ronnie, Nice, The Foundations, Jeff Beck, Long John Baldry, Family, P.P.Arnold, John Mayall, Crazy world of Arthur Brown and many others.

Now at 70yrs,  (2020)  ! still remember my 'Mod' days as clear as if I were 17 again! ...........................Great days, great memories
