  1. I'm surprised there isn't a thread for this school (or the secondary school for that matter). I was at Fernwood Junior between 1963 and 1967, my parents moved to Wollaton from West Hallam (the other side of Ilkeston) so I was late coming into my year group. I remember the headmaster was Mr Whittaker, and many years later we bumped into him outside the Camelia House in Wollaton Park. He used to come and give us special lessons called "verbal reasoning" and what we didn't realise was that this was actually coaching for the 11 Plus. It succeeded because out of a class of 33 all but one person got
  2. Have to agree have you not seen Crown Island/Wollaton Rd/Russell Drive when Glen-Bott/Bluecotte/Fernwood turn out, bedlam, try leaving the house
  3. I started at this school in 1958 after passing the then 13+ examination at Trent Bridge Senior Boys. This school closed the year I left, 1960 and the remaining pupils were transferred to Fernwood Secondary or Comprehensive? which was then, I think, a new school. The Art school It had an old house just off the top of Waverley street and we also used part of the Nottingham College of Art (next to the Arboretum)for some of the arty subjects. Did anybody out there used to go that school?
  4. Fernwood gets a few mentions in Nottstalgia, but buried in amongst other threads. https://nottstalgia.com/forums/search/?q=fernwood
  5. Interesting reading. I lived on Brindley road. all my family brothers and sister went to Portland . I went to fernwood in Wollaton after Portland . Sister went to William sharp. Brothers went to Glaisdale and Mundella. Great memories.
  6. Don't remember any Tea Bags in the early 60s when i was at 'Marsdens' when did Tea bags hit the shops?..........all the Tea was in Qtr pound packets, PG,,,Typhoo,,,Brooke Bond Divi,,,Hornimans,,,Lyons Quick Brew........then all the cheaper own brands at 1/- per Qtr........Coop had Gold Label,,Silver,,,and Red as their own brands........at Marsdens we had one called Fernwood. Ive not drunk Tea since i was about 15,.........even the smell of it turns my stomach,
  7. re: #116 I am an inveterate gambler, so my educated (and doubtless incorrect) guess is based on the sporting references. I was an inmate of Hut 1 and can't remember exactly who was freezing their nuts off next door. You clearly are not one of the three sporty lads I mentioned earlier as they left at 16, but among other Bilborough related things that had been in the loft for 30 years, I have found the 1976 Presentation of Prizes programme that my mother kept. So how about Chris Wood? I actually opened both the batting and the bowling for the school team, which gives a cl
  8. I would have thought that they would have gone to Cottesmore or Margaret glen bott, or possibly Fernwood.
  9. A 1923 photograph of the Jackson family standing next to Wollaton Canal with Balloon Woods in the background has reignited my interest in the history of my childhood stamping grounds. I've also turned up a photo of Grannie Simmonds who apparently lived in one of the Balloon Houses and 'traded' with the bargees on the canal, swapping her home grown vegetables for a few lumps of coal. Now, having more past than future (like so many Nottstagians and Bilboroughians, no doubt ), I'd really like to put together a little book about the whole of that area, including photographs, drawings, history, na
  10. The 'local demolition company' seemed to consist of the local youths from Firbeck and Fernwood estates. No sooner had the hearse containing the coffin of the old boy that lived there driven up the 'Black Path', and I was on the 'Train Bridge' at the time and saw it go by, then the gangs moved in and trashed the place. Myself and Ian Hutchins were taking Chips the dog for a walk along the canal one day when the Pigs tried to arrest us for being seen vandalising the place, we happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, it took some convincing to persuade them we'd had nowt to do with i
  11. I lived at Lenton Abbey between 1963 - 1969/70 Which is only a mile or so from Beeston Fields Drive/Bramcote. I even went to Beeston Fields Junior, then Fernwood Secondary School in Wollaton, which is up the road & butts up to Bramcote. Myself & friends heard that Roger Moore either lived in Bramcote, which was just up the road from the Hutt pub, or his Parents lived there & regularly visited the area to see them. Being huge fans as teenagers, we searched for years & never saw him. Then one day (I think it was about 1966/7 - definitely before 1969/70 because I had left home by
  12. Yes, apart from the Jackson's open drift mine there was a huge bell pit mound with a crater in the centre just to the west of it. It must have been ancient as there was a huge tree growing on top of the bank, I remember it well as I attempted to climb it once, rather foolishly wearing short trousers. I slithered all the way down the main trunk while trying to cling on to it, taking the skin off my legs and shredding my trousers, as you well know, the worst part was trying to come up with a good story before you had to go home and face your mother. Incidentally, the crater was used as our main
  13. Tottle Brook starts as two tributaries at Springwood Farm then runs in a slight depression down to Bilborough Road where it is joined by Cockington Road. The plot of land at this point was originally occupied by one of the Barton family who lived in a now demolished brick cottage on the site, there were also two ancient Barton buses at the back of the land which were used as storage sheds. When the property became vacant, the vandals moved in, the cottage was trashed and the buses were flattened to the ground by constant jumping on their roofs causing them to collapse, there doesn't appear to
  14. I remember when my father bought the land and planned to build the petrol station next to the Hemlockstone Pub back in 62. The planned rear wall along the back of the garage, belonging to a row of lock up garages extending the length of the block, was across the course of the Tottle Brook. Despite numerous objections, the Council approved the plans and a little bit more of the Brook disappeared underground. Of course, back then there was no buildings, houses or similar to the west of our garage; just open fields right up to the old Nottingham Canal. In fact, the main Wollaton Vale stopped at
  15. Comes out from under the footpath at the end of Yalding Drive Wollaton. When we were kids it actually emerged from under the canal which was once there. I believe it goes behind the houses on the north side of Fernwood Crescent then goes underground to get under Wollaton Vale. Then as Taxi Ray says then down the backs of the big houses on the south side of Wollaton Vale. Why the pub on Glaisdale Drive was once called the Tottle Brook I have no idea. The stream which flows near it (I think the building is now called the Ghurka Kitchen) could not possibly be the Tottle Brook as this disappears
  16. Banjo 48, after reading your post today. I recognised the name Hampson, and speaking to the wife she explained a bit more to me. Mr hampson was my wifes geography teacher at Fernwood in the 60s, he was a very well respected teacher. My daughter works in a care home in Beeston and Mr Hampson is a resident, he has been there for about 6 months, my wife seen him at their xmas fair and had a chat about the old times, I believe he is 90+ years old
  17. Yes, I had a full complement too, I don't know what happened to them but I still have an I-Spy annual from about 1958, I'll have to dig it out, I think it's in the garage. I found these photographs I took of 'Black Path' bridge when Wollaton Vale road bridge was being built, circa 1980? I know I've put them on here before but most of you writing on here probably haven't seen them. This was taken from Balloon Woods flats, not much clearance underneath is there. We used to fight for places to sit on the extreme right of the bridge so you could look down the track towards Trowell. The 'dares'
  18. I went to Forest Fields Grammar School and I'm proud of it. I blew all my O levels but through hard work and never being afraid to tackle any obstacle , I've had a rewarding varied career, financially and satisfaction wise. My three girls went to Fernwood and two run their own businesses and the other is in Educational Management. I think myself no better or worse than anyone else. However, I appreciate that I come over a bit snobby at times due to my education and having spent a lot of time living in Wollaton on and off (63 - 86).
  19. Interesting discussion re Bramcote Lane and the surrounds. We lived in Mapledene Crescent, Wollaton for a couple of years after leaving ROT in 62. What I can tell you is that the land on the south east side of Bramcote Lane from Woodbank Drive south was all wasteland with low scrub covered hills. I know this well as we acquired an old motorbike and used to ride it around the wasteland and up and down the hills (more like high mounds). Used to hide the motorbike when we were not using it but sadly, it expired half way up a hll one day and never moved again. This area was just being leve
  20. Calls to remove the ‘Alps of Watnall’ AN ENORMOUS pile of gypsum waste in Watnall has been branded ‘an abhorrent blot on the landscape’ by a local resident. The huge pile of waste – nicknamed the Alps of Watnall – has got so big over the last few months, it can be seen from the motorway and the hills in the village. Resident John Smith said: “If you go to any raised part of Watnall and look over you can see the whole horizon is dominated by this white slag heap. It’s massive. A monstrosity.” But Broxtowe Borough Council this week defended Fernwood Fuels – the firm responsible for the waste
  21. Here we go Guys! Regarding the 'Big White Tip', more information for you: The white tip is 'British Gypsum' at Fernwood Supplies near the Watnall Bakery, Hucknall Road. Councillors are monitoring it for environmental issues.
  22. There was a Teddy Boy gang with amazing quifs and DA's that I seem to recall was a combination of blokes from Firbeck, Bilborough and Fernwood Estates that regularly used to wander up and down the Nottingham Canal in the late 50's armed with a variety of air guns and even 22 rifles, shooting at anything that moved. You could tell when they'd been visiting, the canal was full of dead frogs in particular, pike, any unfortunate birds and even cats, I even knew them to shoot at cows on the opposite bank. We were scared stiff of them, if the cry, 'It's the Teds', was heard, we were off. One day
  23. I notice that nothing has been said on here about Trowell Moor Colliery, wouldn't this have had some connection with the sough you are talking about, it was situated very close to the alleged canalside exit near Coventry Lane. I've mentioned this pit on here before but can't find out much about it's history or closure date, but the shafts and some of the buildings were still there in the early 60's. Tottle Brook disappeared underground at the junction of Bilborough and Cockington roads. I believe it travels down the centre of Cockington road and under Firbeck Estate. There used to be dog boa
  24. Just checked the plans and tried to fix it on a modern map, scales are different and on the plans there is no built up area, but there is an old colliery with a slough somewhere under the Wollaton Rd under Fernwood Crescent area dating back to the 1780's. The slough runs approx north south and would come out just north of Derby Road around Sandy Lane or thereabouts. Wollatons safety barrier in the Deep Hard seam would be around Glaisdale Drive to protect it from the flooded old 1790's pit, and runs north south and approx 300 metres thick.
