Does anyone remember going to a concert at the Theatre Royal 1968 or 69 where the bill consisted of Amen Corner, The Move, The Nice, Pink Floyd and headlined with Jimi Hendrix?
-
Never heard of that before Jill, Jimi Hendrix makes more than once, a similar reference, one on video..he's thinking here.. Suggests a thinking mind, are you musical?? Congrats on your self-diagnosis in your twenties, Age 59.. diagnosed with Autism.. My best mates 'got it' also by my secondary observation, iv'e always found myself drawn to these sought of people.. The old man who gave me Grubby apples, he would have been born about 1870 !

Eire Apparent was Henry McCulloch's band, later to find fame as a member of Wings as well as appearing at Woodstock (plus the film) as a member of Joe Cocker's Grease Band. Their only album was produced by Hendrix, as well as him playing on it. Can't say I've heard it but I do own most of the contemporary material issued by the rest of those acts, with the exception of Amen Corner who evidently were not influenced by the other bands on the bill, seeing the direction they'd take the following year. Regrettably, a time before I was born. Count yourselves extremely lucky if you were born in th

Jimi Hendrix at the Theatre Royal
Marion Docherty replied to Marion Docherty's topic in 60's Nottingham
That will be the one thank you. I remember it cost me just under ten shillings for which I had to save my pocket money for weeks to go! Fantastic concert though rather an odd line up. I went to see Hendrix and he didn’t disappoint -
This was an advert in the Newark Advertiser for what was probably the concert in Dec 1967. "THEATRE ROYAL NOTTINGHAM Sunday, December 3. Tel. 42328 5.30 Two Performances 8.0 JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE. THE MOVE PINK FLOYD, AMEN CORNER, The Nice, EIRE APPARENT" Stalls 17/6, 15/-, 12/6, 9/6. Dress Circle 17/6. Upper Circle 11/- Gallery 5/-.

There are several old threads here which mention Jimi Hendrix. https://nottstalgia.com/forums/search/?q=hendrix&quick=1 It may take a while but if you trawl through them you'll probably find more information on the Theatre Royal gig.

Wonder how many from Nottingham made the trip to the Spalding bulb halls on a sweltering May Bank Holiday 55 years ago to see , Hendrix, Cream, Geno, The Move,Pink Floyd etc......all for £1 ? Pink Floyd were on when we arrived and were terrible and to my shame we didn't stay to see the rest ! More details of the gig here : https://www.ukrockfestivals.com/spaulding-festival.html -
started my club life with the dungeon where great acts like steam packet( long john, rod stewart, Julie driscoll) lead me to see Jimmy Cliff ,..Jimmmy James and the great Jimmy Hendrix at the beachcomber. Friday and Sunday nights were spent in the Brit, Boat and the Union clubs at Trent bridge. We all use to gather outside Saxones and get the bus down Arkwright street, past Selectadisc .The pigalle, colemans, flying horse, bodega and many more places would take mer down the nostalgic route...i then left nottingham for a student life in Manchester where i worked some of the best clubs in England

Surely a man of your calibre could learn to play it left handed, Jimi Hendrix seemed to manage ok!!

That might have been the Woodstock effect, as they made their first major appearance there (They were on stage just before Hendrix.) so promoters here may have assumed they appealed to a rock audience. -
Actually, some pubs don't change. Living in Wollaton, our local used to be the Admiral Rodney, it was a convenient meeting place for all of us pals. I started off underage drinking Home Ales mild and playing darts in the public bar then graduated to what we called the 'little room' in the lounge. I went in there regularly until I moved down here in 1976, I finally had my stag night in there in 77, it seemed appropriate. I didn't go in again till the mid 90's when we went to see the Pogues in Wollaton Park, it hadn't changed at all, after 20 years the landlord actually recognised me without any

Went there yesterday for a ride, no real difference to the roads since I last went (cept speed camera's) but a lot of changes since the 1960's route which included going through Nuthall, Kimberley Eastwood and Ripley town centres, though after Ambergate the road pretty much as it was back then, Recall the widening of the bottle neck at Cromford but that may have been pre 1960? and the later removal of the canal bridge over the road. Matlock Bath itself not changed a deal though lots of the shops now catering for tourist trade, fast food etc, even 3 for the motorcycle trade, talking of which

Hey folks! Writing in from New York. I'm going deep on some research right now on the band circuit in 1967 and I love reading all these memories. Did anyone here go to the Jimi Hendrix Experience show at the Beachcomber on Jan 14, 1967. Also, any resources for photos of Beachcomber? I'm trying to find some details about that show and the performance of Jimmy Cliff and the Shakedown Sound, who opened up for him. Thanks!

Got up this morning and felt really down and to be honest a bit tearful. Had a cup of tea and messed about with Alexa. Then by chance I found a 60’s music app. Had a lovely morning singing (not very well) and dancing (even worse) round whilst doing my cleaning up. Did the Tempations dance, Diana Ross with the arms and the Four Tops as well. Played air guitar with Jimi Hendrix and cried to Roy Orbison and Elvis. Skipped Herman & The Hermits always him them annoying. Singing to The Kinks All Day & All Of The Night and now I am twisting with Chubby Checker (trying not to put my back out)

Likewise HG. I'd previously attended Package Tours etc, but other than the one with Hendrix, The Move, Pink Floyd, and the one with the Stones, Little Richard and Bo Diddley, the rest were crap. Freddie & The Dreamers, and other novelty acts ffs. I yearned excitement, thrills, genuine musicians pushing things to the limits. The Boat Club provided me with that !

Just had a fantastic few days at the Grande Hotel in Vianden, Luxembourg. It's situated in a beautiful riverside village and the food was good, beer and wine good, and everyone spoke good English. There was music or a singer on in an evening, and the restaurant and bar was bedecked with some fantastic pictures and paintings of singers and rock stars, most of whom had stayed there. Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, Duane Allman, Jimmy Page, Rory Gallagher, John Lee Hooker and many more. .... Oh, and Phil Collins ! A great pla

I've got a few LP's called "Backtrack" - "The Who" on one side and "Hendrix" on the other, all on the "Track" label. -
Reverb and tremolo effects go back to the Rock & Roll era and then in the mid 60s the fuzz box arrived followed by phasers, flangers, wah wah etc I love them all The early pedals go for a lot of money on ebay. Wish I'd kept mine. George Harrison used a volume pedal to great effect on several Beatle tracks such as I Need You, Wait and Here There and Everywhere but IMHO the best volume pedal you'll ever hear is on Dave Berry's The Crying Game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c9W2-uGvQQ Jimi Hendrix was an early user of WEM at the IOW festival where WEM's PA made it's debut. Thanks for that Mess...Lizzie M on here worked there..Thorn EMI? Hendrix used WEM.. or HiWatt? Pedals and such..make up for my poor playing. Hall Reverb...thats me!

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them." In a sombre frame of mind this morning, for some reason I began to think about rock and rollers who died young. They burnt the candle at both ends, lived life to the full and went out in a blaze of glory. I think it must have been the attached photo that started me off. I was looking for a picture of former front man from Dr Feelgood, Lee Brilleuax, when I came across this photo of rock legends Wilko John

Into guitars? Yes since 1959. I've had about 9 and I've still got 4 at home. I can strum Michael Row The Boat Ashore and a few similar folk songs. I never got the Hendrix, Clapton, Les Paul thing. I can do a good Hank Marvin's Apache on my 1999 CIJ Strat 62. Some take to guitar playing like a duck to water but I can't seem to get it. (But I'm not giving up yet). I'm now learning to do finger pick, so that's my latest challenge using an acoustic Yamaha apx500iii. Actions a bit high for me but that's all I'm paying for a guitar from now. I used to buy guitar and guitar player magazin

It's all going to be opinion isn't it... For me: Best Blues/Soul /Country singer was Ray Charles. great ccountry singers also include Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Nanci Griffith...soul singers obviously Otis, Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, Curtis Mayfield. Best female jazz singer probably, Sarah Vaughan, but obviously Ella, Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Billie Holiday are all up there, as also are Keely Smith, Dinah Washington etc. Best Male Jazz singer Nat King Cole.. with Chet Baker and early Mathis getting an honourable mention. Best Rock sing
