  1. The Jaybirds played a gig at Gedling School(school dance) in 1964? DavidW will correct me if I am wrong. Alvin Lee at his fastest?
  2. Just looked in my diaries for 1963 / 64 and these are some of the groups that I saw at Digby : The Sabres Tony and the Varitones The Wanderers Rockin Henri and (looks like) Hayseeds ? The Jaybirds appeared at Digby on the 18th April 1964 and my only comment was "great" !
  3. I went to Digby College a few times and may have seen the Jaybirds - I did see the Mockingbirds (Graham Gouldman and Kevin Godley, later 10cc) and the Toggery Five. My band, Salty Dogs also played there.
  4. Many memories of the Jaybirds playing at the Cocked Hat in the 60's.
  5. I'm sure I saw the Jaybirds a number of times at Arnold and Carlton College (Digby) in the early 60s at the Saturday night student dances .
  6. Back in the 60's, after school, I used to go into the Kardomah on Market Street. We used to sit upstairs & chat and sometimes Alvin Lee would come in with his guitar & give us a few tunes or show us how to play something. I remember seeing him play with the Jaybirds at the Elizabethan Rooms as support to Dave Berry & the Cruisers - I may have seen the Jaybirds more than once. RIP Alvin Lee.
  7. Like everyone else I was quite sad to hear of the death of Alvin Lee. I saw him and the Jaybirds at a club in Nottingham, around 1961 and knew then that he would be a big star. R.I.P. Alvin Lee.
  8. straying a bit here, but that's another "Jay" band, Around that time the "most famed" or popular band was the Jaybirds? (later 10 Years After, Alvin Lee etc) I also recall The Jaycats, saw them supporting Herman's Hermits at Co-Op, the hermits should have been made a support band, in something like the Clifton bridge or Dunkirk flyover pillars
  9. Looks some of you are talking about my former home. My dad was landlord from 1957-1971. I have lots of happy memories there most of them good.Yes we did have the occasional fight(cabaret) including one on my 18th when the club room upstairs was gatecrashed by the Beacon lot!!. Thursday nights were also eventful. Dad had a run with Alvin Lee of the Jaybirds (who later became famous with Ten Years After) who wouldn't stop playing when time was called so dad cut the electric to his guitar. After the groups we had the Thursday night disco with DJ Kevin Hopcroft. Remember all those names that's be
  10. Just remembered why I stopped going there! what about the real mod bands The Who, Small Faces, even Quo! to say nothing of live rock gigs there, once saw The Jaybirds there plus of course Jimi
  11. Used to be a group around at that time called the "Jaybirds." What happened to them?
  12. you sure it wasn't the Jay Cats? They supported Herman's Hermits at The Elizabethan Rooms top of big Co-Op, sad to say I went to see them! well more for the birds actually but even so please don't spread it around, lol. Might have been totally different band to Beatles one? think JayCats/Jaybirds sprang from original Alvin Lee band?
  13. Floyd played at Meadow Lane in the 60s, and the Groundhogs played the Running Horse a few times during the 80s and 90s. Used to see The Jaybirds,(Ten Years After)regularly at the Gaumont on Saturday mornings.
  14. Re Alvin Lee, as I remember it was The Jaybirds? though he was part of another band earlier, maybe called The Jaycats? I do know later (less Alvin) that band supported Herman's Hermits (should have been a hangman's noose!) at Elizabethan Rooms? on top of Co-op Parliament St/Derby Rd. Went to that YM a few times, though can't recall any bands there, Do remember a band playing above Black's Camping Shop across the road from there, maybe some boys scouts do but quite "heavy" for era (12 bar Chuck Berry style all night!)
  15. Yes the one and only! I too played in a couple of bands wonder we didn't cross paths, remember Alvin, used to follow his band The Jaybirds, crikey, didn't know Alan had died, what of? hadn't seen him for years then I did in Duke of Newcastle, just goes to show, he didn't recognize me, said I looked like an oap! just goes to show
  16. Re early replies etc, Mick (Mike) Parker had a partner (maybe the man in the suit) called something Hopkins, hired me to do some wiring, there was another guy I recall Terry Flyn, re the GPO "job centre", I think they had a "contract" with all Nottingham schools, all leavers sent for an interview there, though in my day 1962 it was at Broad Street, Parliament Street end, Did Dungeon have a change of music thing? distinctly recall going to see "heavier" type of groups there inc The Jaybirds (later Ten Years After of Woodstock fame) who did an all nighter (I think) Craig, you mentioned Graham
  17. Ashley

    Hyson Green

Alvin Lee later of Ten Years After and Woodstock fame also played The Cherry Tree when band was called The Jaybirds, going back to hyson green one of few businesses that is still the same is Manchester Direct, next to the bank on corner of Greg Blvd.
  18. There has actually been quite mention of The Jaybirds / Ten Years After on here before (Including some old photos) Yes Zab thats him ta (I could never remember his name)
  19. Suprised nobodys mentioned yet Nottingham's very own Ten Years After - started off playing the Nottingham/Mansfied area as the Jaybirds, culminating in their great hit "Love Like A man" ......Turn up the volume & enjoy....
  20. Hi Remember seeing the Jaybirds( later to become Ten Years After who where a hit at Woodstock) at the Slipper, the drummer used to do a twenty minute solo Happy Times
  21. Hi Richard The Jaybirds regular venue was the Cocked Hat in Aspley on a Thursday night, Alvin Lee (Graham Barnes) lived on Sutton Passeys Crescent just off Middleton Boulevard until stardom struck.
  22. I went to the Y on Shakespeare St a few times, but soon graduated to clubs with more ambiance. the one night i remember they had the Jaybirds playing. the lead singer guitarist was awesome! at the time he did stuff from the charts by the likes of Billy Fury and Elvis only better. His name was Alvin Lee and he went on to lead one of the best British R&B bands ever, Ten Years After and their performance at Woodstock is legendary. we did not see much of him in Nottingham, but he did play at the Boat on one occasion.
  23. Thought you might be interested in an old photo of the Jaybirds, with Alvin Lee at the time when they appeared at the Cocked Hat. Incidentally they were the last group to play there as my dad Bill, turned off all the power to their amps as they would not stop playing when "time" was called. The brewery were then unhappy at the loss in sales, so started the Cocked Hat disco era. Val
  24. I only know of his history in The Jaybirds. I was a big fan of TYA. Seem to remember they played a gig at The Palais after Woodstock? Long queues along Parliament Street to get in! I don't think I've ever heard a guitarist play as quickly as Alvin - Hendrix included. Liked his jazz influenced playing too. Just a great musician. Easily the best thing in popular music that came out of Notts.
  25. Correct Stu, anyone remember him when he fronted the Jaybirds who often played in the Cocked Hat on Thursday nights befor forming Ten Years After? Alvin Lee - The only Notts man to front a band at the original Woodstock Fesival in 69...
